Did You Get Your Flu Shot? Kinda My Personal PSA for the Day

So the ONE year in the past 11 that I haven't gotten the flu shot (because I just haven't gotten around to it), I got the flu. It is TERRIBLE, and my poor oldest son says, "But you can't be sick; you're the mommy!" Don't I know it, kid! ;-)

So I guess this is just my little reminder, for those of you who do vaccinate--get that flu shot! I haven't felt this sick in YEARS.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Good question--My husband's an MD, and he diagnosed me based on clinical judgement (symptoms; viewing my appearance & lethargy, etc.)

PRAISE JESUS! Hubby's on his way home with Tamiflu. I had to hit Costco today to get green tea and milk, and picked up some Kirkland's chicken tortilla soup, so I've been sucking that down (I think I had more sodium today than I have had in the past month.) After that I came home and crashed, feeling like I had just run a marathon. The kids are being merciful and cooperative, and even the baby has been sleeping lots (he's also sick, but not flu).

No, thank you!

I've taught middle school for 8 years and have managed to evade all of the junk they catch because I take good care of myself my eating well and avoiding toxins (like those present in the flu shot) in my diet, environment and bloodstream.

This shot, like most other drugs, is a money-making racket. There are plenty of other, safer ways to keep healthy.

ETA: I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were dealing with this right now - I would have spared you the soapbox rant. I hope you feel better soon!!!

Haven't had a flu shot in over a decade, have only had the flu a couple of times since I quit taking it.
Got sick every time I took it.
Never again.

We are not a sickly bunch (I know, knock on wood!) therefore I have never gotten a flu shot.
It just hasn't seemed necessary.
Even when I was working as a first grade aide (among all those lovely bugs and germs LOL!) I never got more than a cold.
I DID have the flu once, ten years ago, and I literally felt like I was dying. I could NOT get out of bed, and my MIL had to come help my husband because for about three days I was completely useless.
Honestly, I would not even have had the strength to sit up and type a coherent question like you are able to do, so, *maybe* it's NOT the flu?
The weird thing is, I have a SIL/BIL who are extremely healthy (no junk food, lots of exercise, sleep, flu shots for both of them and their kids) and yet they are often sick, especially with strep throat!
It really makes me wonder,
what the HELL is keeping us so healthy around here!?
p.s. I hope you feel better soon!!!

I get one every year. I'm an Army combat medic and an EMT. I do not want to put my patients and family in danger. It's really not about ME getting the flu, because I'm young and healthy and would get over it....it's about preventing my patients from getting it...potentially immuno-suppressed people who might not be able to fight it off.

I'm with you....get the flu shot! Don't be a selfish turd!

ETA: I get so sick of hearing stuff like, "I've never had a flu shot in 50 gajillion years and I've never gotten the flu! So that's why getting the flu shot is pointless!"

Just because you don't have extreme flu SYMPTOMS (the only way you know if you've gotten the flu), doesn't mean that you've not had it, carried it, and passed it on to others. Some immune systems simply fight it off better. But some DON'T, and THOSE people are the reason we get the flu shot. We get flu shots to protect OTHER people, not just our selfish selves.

The reason that QueenofCastle got the flu? Not just because SHE didn't get a flu shot, but because the people around her didn't either.

By getting the flu shot, you protect the people who didn't or CAN'T (young babies, immunosuppressed). Not doing so, IMHO, is very selfish indeed.

QueenofCastle, I do hope that you head out and get your shot to protect you and others against the other two types that you've not yet gotten. ♥

End of rant.

I am 49 and have never had a flu shot.
I can count on less than O. hand the number of times I've had the flu. I think twice in my life.
(Hope I didn't just jinx myself!)
My son stopped getting it when he was 5.
I don't think my husband has ever had a flu shot.
He got the flu. Once. Since I've known him. 17 years.

The one year my kids spent hours in the doctor's office and the hospital is the one year they got the shot. Never again. They were 2.5 and 9 months old then. I still get sad thinking how sick they got because we got flu shots for them.

My husband gets it, and I can always tell when he does...he gets sick. Go figure.

I have never got the shot or the flu. I am a big believer of infect me if you dare. I almost never get sick nor do my kids.

This would be why after six hours of watching Monsters Inside Me, I was sure Genna had a parasitic invasion a couple weeks ago. Turns out it was some minor virus and was fine 24 hours later.

Maybe if you get it you just need to keep getting it?

Our whole house is vaccinated against the flu, don't want to take any chances with new baby on the way this week. We always get our flu shots. My daughter (8) came home the other day and told me that her best friend, who's mother chooses not to vaccinate, told her that the flu shot makes people sick so we shouldn't get the flu shot. I can't believe that this line of thinking still exists. If people bothered to research the vaccine AT ALL they would know that this is not true. Sigh...

Sorry to border on debate in response to your harmless question, but I happen to be very opinionated about this, happening to be someone with a pretty crappy immune system.

I hope you feel better soon, the flu sucks!!!

I got my flu shot early in October and wound up in hospital end of month with bronchitis and asthma. I am just getting back to normal about a month later. So flu shots are out. Hubby did fine no flu. I didn't get one last year so I may just have to skip them in the future.

Have a good holiday season.

Nope, we never get the flu shot.

I remember always hearing about the 'flu' and thinking it was just a really bad cold...b/c people just throw that term around willy nilly....and then, 10 years ago (this last October) my family came down with THE FLU! It swept through the house like gang busters and we were ALL sick! Luckily, I sent my kids to my BIL's house the instant my mom (she was staying w/us at the time) became ill and told me it was serious and regardless of how she tried to isolate herself, my husband, my sister and myself + 1 nephew all came down with it! Oh my goodness....the chills, THE BODY ACHES, the vomiting, the diarreah, the fever.....ugh, the smell of all of us alone, is something I will never forget! We were miserable and not able to do anything but lay in bed and suffer through it! The sheer exhaustion and lethargy of it all was something I had never experienced before or since <Knock on some wood> Thankfully the above symptoms only lasted about 24 hours but the following day none of us had any energy or desire to eat anything...it took us about 3 days to feel 100% back to normal.

~I hope you feel better quick! The flu is no joke!

I'm just curious how you knew it was the flu . . . (not being snarky) - is there a lab test or is this diagnosis based on symptoms (or both?)?

And no, I have never gotten a flu shot and I never will if I have any say-so about it.

Yes, ma'am! I had my flu shot (and the kids had it, too) the first day our health plan allowed it - October 1.

I never had the flu growing up, so never saw the need for a flu shot UNTIL one year in college I came down with the flu so badly I was hospitalized. I've never missed getting my flu shot since then (and have never had the flu since, thank god). For anyone who has never had the flu and never had their flu shot, I just hope their luck continues, because when you truly have the flu, you just want to DIE.

I hope you feel better soon! Sorry you're so sick. :(

That's funny. I haven't had the flu shot in over 20 years and have not had the flu that long either. My kids are 13 and 10 and have NEVER had the flu and we do not get any shots. I stopped vaccinating when I met my husband 5 years ago, but they have NEVER gotten the flu shot either. Just my opinion. Regardless, I hope you are feeling better now! =)
