Did Acrylic Nails Ruin Mine?

For 15 years I got acrylic nails done. Before then I would always bite my nails. Now I have had them off for 7 months and my real nails grow very fast (and I'm not biting them)....but some of them grow out with like a wave to them. If I am looking at my nails and have them facing me they aren't straight. Some have dips and curl over right after my finger tip. Is this normal or did I ruin my nails?
Add on: I do take prenatal vitamins. I am also hypothyroid. Could this cause it?

What can I do next?

In a wonderful book called Prescription for Nutritional Healing there is a whole section on nails and different conditions of the nails and what they indicate about one's health, like certain nutrients that may be missing and what that would likely cause the nail to do. It's very interesting!

I was a nail technician for 6 years. Acrylic nails are extremely damaging, and especially after 15 years. Your nail plate received no oxygen for that many years. There are strengtheners such as Nail Envy by OPI ($17 a bottle) that will help, but the damage is at the base, and they may always grow out with dips and curls.

It took my nails about a year to get bettter. I only had acrylic nails for about 2 years on and off though. I wore Sally Hansen clear polish and that seemed to help. Good luck!

Mine do this as well, I'm not sure how to fix them and I didn't have the acrylics on. It's only on my pointer and middle fingers too. I take multi vitamin daily and they have definitely strengthened but not straightened. I've asked my mom about it too one day and she said that it happened to her when she was younger but now that she is older they are straight... Who knows!

I do believe the nails do get ruined, not by the acrylic but by the nail sander used. I had my nails done several years ago, and stopped to let my nature nails grow, but they grew squared, flat and wavy where the fake nails were glued on. Not sure how to fix it, I tried taking vitamins and tried warm wax treatment, but nothing yet.

Yes, acrylic nails ruin your own. However, if you let them grow out naturally for a while, then will eventually get back to normal. If you are taking prenatal vitamins, this should help. Whenever they are sawing at your nail to replace the acrylic at the nail bed for fills, they saw (file) at your real nail leaving your nail brittle and missing layers.

Sally Hanson has a new line of nail products that work very well. The pink bottle has calicum in it and it does help. Try buffing them up to a shine and then apply the nail treatment. Sometimes regular manicures will help alot.

I doubt it is due to acrylic nails...that said I wouldn't recommend too much chemicals on the body anyway. I say this, because I use very little nail products (never had acrylic nails) and my nails (specially my thumbs) grow like a wave. It might just be the quality of keratine produced by our bodies.

Alot tof times the nail places are using porcelin and not acrylic! most ppl don't know that. I really can't say what is causing that but the porcelin may have played a part in it. I try to get gel overlay when i do get my nails done.

Some of my nails grow oddly, with an extra curve or bend to them as they get longer, and I've never had acrylics or any kind of fake nails. I did bite my nails until I was 13, however, so maybe that has something to do with it. I notice it especially when my nails get overly long (which I don't like anyway because I tend to scratch my kids accidentally when my nails get too long), so I try to keep them trimmed to just beyond my fingertips.

There are certain indications like lines in nails that show mineral deficiencies or poor absorbtion. I good book to read about this is: 'Your Face Never Lies'. by Michio Kushi

After I quit acrylic nails, it took a year for my nails to get back to their former state. Be patient!

Sounds like you have a vitamin deficiency. The acrylics should not have a long term effect on the nail bed unless a fungus was allowed to grow under the nail. I would say to get yourself a prenatal vitamin. It doesn't matter if you are trying to get pregnant or not, those vitamins are best for women to achieve a healthy balance.
