our twins boys have had diarrhea for the past 7 days. neither one has a fever and their appetite is great. the pooh itself is causing them to have a rash, that we are treating with zinc oxcide. we saw their doc about it, but he didn't really have a real life time-line as to how long it would last. anyone have this problem and how long did it take to clear up?

thanks in advance,

david

So What Happened?

thank you so much everyone. i feel the love in all your responses and i'm happy that mamasource is also papasource.

we put them on the brat diet, used the zinc oxide, put them on soy based formula for a couple days and again thanks to all the input, we stayed calm and cool. both boys are doing much better and the rash is all but gone. we reduced the use of wipes in favor of soft cotton towel and water. the best product we used though was Angelina blossom balm; all organic and natural. cured the rash faster then anything else. it is a great product and is worth checking out angelinaskincare.com.

Walmart has a spray zinc oxide which work really great---then you are not having to rub off the thick stuff--which can cause more pain to the already cranky area...good luck! (Sometimes in the baby section---sometimes in the health and beauty section- you may have to ask for it)

Have they tried any new fruits lately? Our son had issues with certain fruit giving him diarrhea and diaper rash. Citrus, pineapple and tomato were the worst, but even peaches, plums and grapes would do it.

Good luck!

At 7 months they might be able to eat mashed up banana, if so I would give them some everyday. You can also check with your pediatrician and see if they are old enough for yogurt. That can help their digestive system to regulate itself again. I am not familiar with zinc oxcide (I assume it is just a diaper rash cream) but you can use aquaphor (aquafor?) on top of the zinc oxide to create a waterproof barrier that should also help protect their skin against the harsh diarrhea. Good luck. I am not a doctor but 7 days seems like a long time to have diarrhea.

Hi P.,

Make sure they are getting enough water so they do not dehydrate. Give them alkaline water.

What are they eating? I would put them on an alkaline diet so their bodies will balance itself out.

If you want more info let me know.

Good luck

it could be that they are teething, both my daughters had diarrhea when they were teething. diaper rash cream is really important and also putting some baking soda in their tub and let them soak for a little bit.
good luck, it should pass and it is always okay for daddy's to use mamasource, it should be called parentsource.

I don't know about the diarrhea, but I have a great remedy for the rash. My mom found it when my daughter was young on-line, but now you can get it at Walgreens. The remedy is called Triple Paste. It is a little expensive, about $30 when I last got it, but a little goes a long way and it comes in a fairly large tub, maybe about 15 oz or more.

God bless the boys in getting over the diarrhea and God bless you for having to deal with the diapers.

have they tried any new foods recently? if so, this could be a type of allergic reaction to the food (a friend of mine whose daughter has several food allergies has seen her daughter have this problem with certain types of foods)

If you can't figure out what is causing it either through elimination of new foods or old ones, try the BRAT diet - Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. OK, for 7 month olds, mash up Banana, overcook the rice or try rice milk, and keep the grains white so the kids have a chance on digesting them.

My daughter was sensative to soy, but I had a hard time figuring it out because she was eating it, gaining weight and generally ok, but had diarrhea. We started the brat diet and eliminated the say and had her back to normal in about a week. What was confusing was the poop was not traditional diarrhea, it was just soup, not liquid with pieces in it like diarrhea caused by disease.

Good Luck

Dear P. M - we have experienced occasional diarrhea with our daughter without fever or any other symptoms. I think it was related to certain foods (too much acidic food and with us it turned out to be dairy). What helped clear it up more than any other fancy diaper cream was to wash her bottoms with warm water after each diaper change, let her be without diaper as long as you can and let her little tush air dry. When our daughter was really small, we used to blow dry with the hair dryer setting on low/cool. We were told not to use any wipes until it cleared up because wipes may irritate already irritated skin. I used to use tissue wet with water just to give it a little wipe before washing her in the sink/tub. The only cream we used during the day was Aquaphore - soothing without drying and then at night, we put another layer of over night desitin on top of the aquaphor layer. For food, we would do the BRAT diet - banana, bread, apple sauce and toast. For seven month olds, you can give them mashed up banana and some apple sauce. Worked like a charm for us. I also used to over cook rice in chicken broth - if they are already having rice cereal this is soothing for their tummy and gives them little bit of fat that they would need. If you let it air dry as much as possible, by third day, you should see a marked improvement.
Good luck.

Yes, the best thing is to stick to the BRAT diet even if they are asking for other foods until it clears up. That means no dairy which is so hard for parents since we hate to deny our kids milk. Organic yogurt is encouraged because the probiotics can help with the digestive tract. If you don't tackle it now, it will recur and it's so hard to seem them uncomfortable. Good luck!

Jello water...
If you want to clear up the diarreah, here's what you do. Make the jello water according to the instructions except don't add ice or put it in fridge to set. Instead put the warm jello water in their bottles and give it to them. It sounds a little weird but works like a charm! I have 6 kids and I can tell you this works. Also, if they are eating solids at all then little cheese cubes will also help. Good luck!

Immediately pull any new foods that have been introduced. Wait until 3 days after the runny poo and diaper rash is gone and introduce one of the "new" foods. Wait three days. If there is no recurrence then trial another food, wait 3 days... repeat one at a time for every new food introduced to them. Poor little darlings :<

Dear P.,
My daughter got diarrhea everytime she was teething and it really burned her little tushy.
Don't use baby wipes as they can really sting and irritate. Use only warm, soft wash rags. I know with diarrhea it's kind of tough to do, but really be sure their tushies have a chance to air out and dry before putting any type of cream or anything on them. I used corn starch and kept my little one in training panties during the day as much as possible.
Luckily, she loved bananas and applesauce and that helped some, but during teething, she had had a rash no matter what I fed her.
If it is a matter of teething for your little ones, it will just have to run it's course.
I hope you find what works best for you to use on their hineys...you've got a while of teething ahead of you.

Best wishes!

Hi P. M,
Our twin boys (now 29 months old) had it when they were babies, and it usually lasted between 7 to 10 days -- it is somewhat normal, I think. I remember it surprised me that it lasted that long, at that time they were eating only formula and breast milk, so I tried to change my diet. For e.g. nuts, chocolate, spices, and cabbage did not do well and I had to exclude them from my diet.

Are your boys teething? This often causes diarrhea. It usually last during the worst part of the teething and then disappears.
