Diarrhea for 2 1/2 Week

My daughter is 11 months old and has bad diarrhea for 2 1/2 weeks now and still counting. It first started off with throwing up and diarrhea, not it's just mainly diarrhea. We did 4 days of toast and pedialyte only and it didn't help anything at all. We took her to the dr. she said there was nothing she could do for her that it is viral gastiris (sp). She was starting to walk and now she's too weak to even stand up. I need advice on what to do. Do you think it's something more than viral gastiris(sp) and does it "just have to run it's coarse". I'm very concerned. She said it's not the rotavirus that her stools aren't dark enough?
Then as I read around I read that accute diarrhea in children under 5 years of age there is 1.9 million deaths/yr and that just put me more into a shock state.
She goes through a spurt where she's HAPPY and then where she is just soooo whiney.. We do have a prescription diaper rash treatment, but it really isn't helping even caking it on. And 2 days ago she started throwing up again?

What can I do next?

S., that is too long for this to be going on. If she started throwing up again, she is probably losing weight too. Keep putting the fluids (pedialite)back in and call A NEW DOCTOR!

Ditto what the previous person said. Get a second opinion. How long ago did you take her to the doc? If it's been a while, I would take her back.

BTW, my daughter had Rotavirus and her stools were pasty/pale as the diearrhea resolved. It also lasted for about 8-10 days and pretty predictably resolved on its own.

Does she have a fever? Maybe a stool culture will rule out the possibility of a bacterial infection.

I'v also read that resuming a normal diet as soon as your child can tolerate it can actually speed up recovery and get her system back to normal. You might try mild "binder" type foods. Nothing too acidic, fatty or fibery. Probiotics are also a good idea.

For the rash, I've had great luck with A&D original ointment. Rinse her bum with water, don't wipe her with wipes, give her some time to air dry, slather on the stuff and diaper up.

I hope she's better soon and I hope you find a more sympathetic doctor. 2 1/2 weeks is a LONG time to be dealing with this.

S.,

If it were me I'd be for taking her to the ER and raising h*ll until they figured out what was wrong. 2 1/2 weeks is too long for her to feel this way.

Hugs to your little girl and hopes that she's better soon.

Hope this helps,
Melissa

Have you tried switching to different milks? My daughter got really sick (diarrhea and throwing up) and the diarrhea never went away. My doc said that since she had such bad diarrhea that it 'washed' away all the things that break down the lactose. I tried soy and it went away. I kept her on soy for a couple months then went back to cows milk

Try making some jello (the regular way) and before you add the last cups of water just let it cool and have her drink it.

Also try goldenseal on her rash... It works wonders! They make it in a liquid form and you could just dab it with a cotton ball on her tush.

You may want to try some Acidophilus. Acidophilus helps to provide the bowels with the good bacteria necessary to control and manage bowel movements. It also aids in digestion, and helps restore the natural intestinal flora. I would recomend a liquid form for little ones and make sure you get the one with the highest active cultures ( at least 2 billion). This is completely natural, and helps the body help itself. Also, if she doesn't have a fever, you can give her yogurt(plain, or one without corn syrup or high sugar). Sugar inhibits the body's immune system, and she needs hers to be at 100% right now. Yogurt is also a healthy way to restore the intestinal flora and the good bacteria. You may want to find out if it could be Beaver Fever, or Giardia. Weird names, I know, but my family had this once and the doctor said it was very rare, and came from swimming in or drinking contaminated water. The diareah with intermittent vomitting lasted for 4 weeks. Hydration is key! Fell free to e-mail me if you want more info.

How long has it been since you talked with your doctor. If it's been a week call him and tell him it's still going on. Most drs say, "call me if this doesn't get better by (such and such a time) And always call if you're anxious and don't understand what's going on.

Babie who die when they have diarrhea die from dehydration. Keep your little one well hydrated. If she is regularly peeing her diapears and her skin is firm and not wrinkled looking and she sheds tears when she cries she's not dehydrated. Continue giving liquids to her. Have you tried the BRAT diet? It's prescribed for vomiting and diarrheas. bananas, ice, apple, toast.

Yes, viruses just have to run their course. However one can become sick with something else because their immune system is down.

Diarrheas is also caused by organisms found in the water, especially in areas without good sanitation. Discuss this possibility with your ped.

If she has had diarrhea for that long, take her back to the doctor. Get a second opinion. Get her checked out for hydration levels and have her given IV fluids if necessary. Getting dehydrated is VERY DANGEROUS. Any possibility of something like e-coli? I would get her in ASAP! After 2 1/2 weeks, I'd say that "let it run it's course" is beyond a possibility at this point. Good luck. I hope you get some good news soon.

Has she tried any new foods lately? Had shots recently? Have you changed household cleaning products for different ones. Are there any new pets in the house? My 5 year old when she was 6 months old she had diarrhea for 2 weeks, it turned out to be a reation to the formula she was drinking. We switched to soy and it cleared up. But before we found out what was wrong we had her Dr. take stool samples to make sure there was no viral or bacterial infection. Have you tried that? If your Dr. keeps insisting nothing is wrong go to another Doc or to the ER. When my daughter was sick like that friends, family members, and other moms all kept telling me that there was nothing wrong with my baby. They were soooo wrong. Trust your gut. I did and it made all the difference.Get a second opinion. Remember you are your child's biggest advocate. Best of luck.

I agree with all the others..when my old son had rotovirus he Had a pasty almost pink or orange twing to his poo. and it cleared up in a matter of a week. SHe could have an infection of some sort Has anyone else in the family been sick? Have you been sick? Usually if it is a flu bug everyone gets it. I know if one person gets something in my house it is a mtter of a week before we all have it especially this year. I would go get someone else to look at her or push you doc to run tests a baby doesnt throw up and have the runs for two weeks for a gastro virus at least in my opinion. Good luck and I hope the angel is feeling better soon!!
