My son (22 months), since Thursday, has had diarrhea, we have put him on the BRAT diet, but it doesn't seem to be working, I have been giving him probiotics and that doesn't seem to be working. He rarely has ever gone poop in his sleep, but since Friday morning, he is waking up and covered in poop from his waist to his toes, and the smell is almost about to make you puke-which thank heavens he is not doing. He is drinking, but not eating that much. Last night I put him in a size 5 diaper thinking that would hold it more in and it made it worst. I called the doctor on Sunday because he had heavy gas and his poop was like white paste, he is not running a fever. I have him in daycare, but he doesn't seem to have a problem there, just at home. Please help......

Additional comment: I checked him before I went to sleep and he didn't have any poop. He is drinking well. He isn't having the problem at school. On Thursday his sheet said he had 2 blow-outs, 1 at 7:30 am, and then a normal one, and another blow-out at 3:30 pm, so it wasn't frequent. he was a little loose on Friday at school, and Saturday, a little loose and a little more often, Sunday, loud gas and the white paste poop, called the Dr. something is going around she said, keep him on the BRAT diet and make sure he is drinking water, gator-aid. Yesterday wore up covered in poop, but he only went once at school and it was normal? Today, woke up covered in poop, no calls from school. They are not afraid to call me about this they called non stop when he started at this daycare, my son has ALWAYS HAD LOOSE STOOLS.

BRAT diet is: Bananas, Rice, Apples and Toast.

He already cannot have: Milk, yogert, dairy, fruit preserves or juice due to him being a loose child.

My son is 18 months and since he was born he has poops so bad that it goes from his little bottom to his neck.Literally.. At Kindercare they call him "blow out". He sometimes goes 3-4 times a day. I too have taken him to the doctor and the doctor says some babies are just that way. I too have tried the brat diet and nothing changed. He used to get sent home from kindercare, because if they have diarhea more than 3 times they have to leave. My doctor finally wrote a note to kindercare saying that my little guy is not sick that is just how he is. I guess it will be a funny story someday to share with his girlfriend. ha ha

It sounds like it could be the flu/bug that is going around. We got both the puking and the stools like you are describing. They were whitish in color for days. It took my daughter 8-9 days to get back to normal poop. I would think that's what's up and just watch for yourself.

Yes, we are battling this here too. My daughter is going on 10 days now. She started with vomiting and then the horrid smelling poops. The amount of watery/poop diapers has significantly decreased in the last two or three days, I'd say 1-2 times a day. My son was actually the first to have it though, he was sick in the morning with vomiting and by dinner time he was fine. He had a few weird whitish ones a couple days later, just odd color in general. Then two straight diarrhea and now they are starting to seem more normal.
My daughter is drinking fluids and starting to regain her appetite. She went about 4 days with no interest in solids. The nurse at the doctor's office also suggested the BRAT diet, and that probiotics were good. She also said it can take a while for the watery poop to go away. She asked how she appeared to be feeling, in our case, my d. is pretty happy, just not when it's diaper changing time.
Just a tip. If your sons seems to get bad diaper rashes, I would put diaper cream, aquafor, or some barrier on his tush. My poor baby had a terrible rash. I had to use the hydrocortisone to get it down, and many bath tub cleanings vs. wiping her.
Best of luck, hope it passes soon. We all hate to see our little ones have to be so miserable.

sounds like rotavirus to me. although, it usually has more of a green poop. But the smell is what gives it away. Just make sure they are hydrated. My dd was 10 months old when she got it, she wouldn't eat or drink and ended up in the hospital on an IV for 2 days. The diarrhea lasted for nearly 2 weeks though. The BRAT diet will not make the diarrhea go away, but it is easier on the tummy so stick with it so it doesn't get worse.

OK I just reponded to the other moms responce on roto-virus. Green poop with an really nasty sweet smell like you want to vomit is a sign of roto-vrus. After taking my little one in for it last week that was one of the questions my ped asked me. Also my little guy was not vomiting either just would not drink or eat anything. It lasted for about 9 days. Iwould read the other moms post on roto-virus. I think that might be what ur little one has not sure but you might want to take him in.

I bet he just has a stomach virus. When my kids have viruses the doctor usually gives us a 1-2 week time period for the kids to get better. That's good he is keeping hydrated. The best advice I've ever gotten from another parent is when you're in doubt, just take your child to the doctor. That is what they are there for. Plus, with the holidays around the corner, it would be nice knowing he has seen the doctor and nothing is seriously wrong. Good luck! I just hate it when the little ones are sick!:(

There could be anything, but when you said ..... his poop was like white paste.... that could be of little concerned. I don't want to sound scary but and hoping it not to be, but it could be something serious too. I am sending you the links of other forums and articles which might help you regarding this. I think I would rather be knowledgeable and scared than being ignorant and end up with more worse situation.

These are few of those results which I found when I Google 'White Poop' on it. I hope this might help you. Of course your pediatrician's word is best for your child but it sometimes helps to get other's ideas too.

I myself is a mom of a toddler (34 months) and an infant (7 months) and always keeps my eyes open for these kind of topics.

Ugggh. I don't know what's going on...I'm eager to see your responses b/c my son has had diarrhea two weeks tomorrow. It seemed like it was going away, but only for like two days and now is back. Luckily he is eating and drinking. I don't know about white paste, that sounds pretty strange. Some stomach virus I think is going around. He started out vomiting too for the first 3-4 days of the diarrhea. I would call the doc if he continues to not eat, but as long as he's hydrated is the most important thing I'm sure you know. No fever in our case either. What is the BRAT diet? My son too has been waking with poopy pants, never does he do this, he usually waits until at least 10am. But it is like a lotion consistency and pale green and strangely stinky. I think I will bring him in today to the doc since it's been almost 2 weeks. Hope your little guy gets better!

My son had this about 2 months ago. No fever or vomitting, just diarrhea. He never pooped at night but when he was sick, it was just like with your son. We took him to the dr and it was a mild case of rotavirus. It lasted for about 14 days (maybe a bit longer). Be very weary that he does not want to drink. It's good he's eating b/c he'll get hydrated through solids, but he needs to drink as well. If he gets dehydrated he’ll need to stay in the hospital and get an IV with fluids. I'm surprised the daycare is still allowing him to stay in there. How many loose poops does he have a day? I would take him to the dr. Also, he'll probalby get a really bad diaper rash with all the diarrhea. We used Triple Paste with my son and it helped right away. A bit pricey but very worth it. You can find it at CVS, Walgreens or Target (cheapest at Target). I would also change him in the middle of the night. If you know he's got diarrhea, don't let him sleep in it through the night.

My daughter, 21 months, has something that sounds exactly like this. The white paste diarreah that stank, appetite was down, no fever. She went back and forth between feeling crappy and wanting to be snuggled and acting just fine! It turned out to be just a virus going around lately and only lasted about 4-5 days. We had to ride it out with lots of fluids, chicken w/rice foods (the rice helps bind the poop some) and some Tylenol sometimes. She did puke twice too, but the diarreah explosions were the worst! Your son may just have the same thing that's going around. Hang in there!
