Diapers- Part 2

Kristin L just asked about Diapers and in reading some responses, it occured to me that certain diapers fit certain body types better than others. My baby girl is on the chunky side and seems to be leaking out of the Huggies EVERY night. I finished the pack but need to buy diapers TODAY. Can anyone recommend a diaper for the chunky monkey babies out there?

Thanks for your help, in advance.

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone who responded to my request for alternative diapers for my chunky monkey. :) Anyway, here is what I understood:

1) Certain diapers fit certain babies better
2) There is a product out there called Diaper Doublers that are about $2.50 for 30 diapers and are a great alternative to buying a different type of a diaper for nighttimes.
3) Luvs is made by the same company as Pampers
4) Generic options, for chunky monkies, include White Cloud made by Wal-Mart or Costco brand's Kirkland.
5) Pampers Cruisers have more room to stretch than Huggies
6) Going up a size might help too

This was great advice. Thanks to all!

My daughter is a chunky 27 lb 18 month old. I found that the Pampers Cruisers are wider and more absorbant than most. The pampers Baby Dry just aren't as wide as the Cruisers. I had the same trouble with the Huggies.

Don't know about the chunky part but we've had the best luck with White Cloud from Walmart! Very rarely do we have leaks. Good luck! J.

I guess I just don't get this.... We never had a single leak and no blow-outs at all once my son (the oldest) was 4 weeks old - regardless of body type. All my kids wore/wear Pampers or Luvs. Luvs are actually identical to Pampers Baby-Dry -- same manufacturer -- but a little cheaper. They wore Pampers swaddlers for newborn and size 1. Then Pampers Baby-Dry/Luvs for size 2 and bigger. My son was chunky, my oldest daughter was skinny as a toothpick -- the wore the same diapers and never had any problems. My youngest is still in diapers since she's just a few months old and she's been in Baby-Dry/Luvs for awhile -- she's not skinny or chunky, just a happy medium.

Try going up a size. When my son was a few weeks old we went ahead and moved him up a size even though he barely made the minimum weight on the package. He was leaking out of the diaper a few times a day. Turns out the sizes overlap quite a bit. From then on we move the kids up as soon as they hit the minimum weight. It's easy to get the diaper snug around the legs and there's more diaper there to soak up liquid. If the diaper is snug, the poop has no where to go up and out the back.

I can't stand Huggies. The few times I tried them, the kids ended up with little balls of gel (eew!) stuck to their bottom. This happened even if we changed them as soon as they peed just once. I've never seen that in 5+ years of using Pampers/Luvs.

Hey N., people who are recommending Luvs, White Cloud, and Huggies are obviously very fortunate and have not had as major leakage problems as they thought. I also have a chubby one (21 months and 36lbs). She has always been chubby, and I too had so much stress trying to find the right diaper. When I am talking leaks, I mean she leaked at every nap and multiple times at night. The only diaper that has worked for us is Pampers Cruisers. Try them, and I'm positive you wouldn't be disappointed! Good luck!

My friend's son is two weeks younger than mine and though they're about the same height--he's six pounds heavier!!! Just a very solid little guy and carries a lot of his weight around his middle. She has been using pampers cruisers in a size 5 (he is 30 pounds.) The weights do not quite match up according to the packaging, but after watching him this weekend I can tell you the fit works and he didn't leak. I don't know if sizing up would work as well with every brand as we both have been using pampers for the most part. Good luck!!

I believe Pampers Cruisers work best for children who are chunkier. My son is very slender and that is why Cruisers don't work as well with him. The Pampers Baby Dry, I think, work better for babies who are slender. Good Luck.

Hi N.!
I totally agree with you. I was watching my girlfriend's son who was the same age as my son. They both wore the same size diaper but different brands for this reason: the Huggies fit the chunky little guy well and the Huggies fit the skinny little guy. If they were switched they didn't get a good fit. Instead of going up or down a size sometimes it helps to try the other brand! (My girlfriend found that Luvs fit similarly to Pampers.)

My daughter is wearing Pampers Cruisers because they have always fit well and they have not leaked. I must admit that it broke my heart to see little red marks around her legs when she was wearing the 6's so I jumped up to the 7's. They are a little big but they haven't leaked. Good luck. I would suggest that you buy a small package of diapers for "experimentation"! Good luck.

Ny neice isn't chunky, but she is much more solid than my daughter, who is pretty small. They both use the Sam's Club brand. There is plenty of extra diaper going up the back and around the waist on both of them. The price is pretty good, too. Neither of us has had any trouble with leaks. My daughter is 26 lbs. and wears a size 4. My neice is probably 28-30 lbs, and also wears a 4.

Huggies suck, not only do they not fit well but they also get all chunky after their wet. The cotton absorption stuff turns into little chunks of wet cotton basically, its nasty. My son was quite the c***, and I always used Luvs or Pampers. Luvs were cheaper but worked just fine. It really does depend, I know some moms say no Luvs but my little one was really chubby and they were perfect.
I also found that when he started leaking at night, it was time to go up a size. If she's in 4's you might want to try out 5's and see if that helps.

Hello,

I Have to say Luvs. When my daughter was born she weighed 9.1 and we tried huggies because that's what my other daughter wore but they leaked all the time on my chunky daughter. Then we switched over to Luv's and I never had a problem! I used Luv's and Crusiers for her! I say LUV's They worked well on my chunky monkey!!

My daughter drinks a lot of liquids so for a while I was putting a new diaper on her at bedtime (8 p.m.) and then I would change her at 11 p.m. (my bedtime). This helped a lot with the night time accidents.

My daughter kept leaking also. I switched to Huggies Night Time diapers. You can't find them everywhere. Kmart sells them & Jewel sells them. You won't find them at Target or Walmart. They are thicker than regular Huggies. Once your little one is older, they also make Night Time pull-ups.

Pampers Cruisers are the best for my chunky one! None of the cheap diapers ever worked for my chubby one, as they just didn't stretch enough around the middle for a good fit. I love huggies, but they didn't work for my #5 baby.

Try a bigger size. We had a leakage problem till we went up a size. She still had room in the smaller size, but they just didn't hold enough. Once we switched, we haven't had any problems. We've used almost every kind of diaper imaginable. You just really need to keep trying to find what works best for you. Simply going up a size may solve your problems. Good luck!

My 3 mo. old little girl has chubby little thighs, and i go between using Luvs and Pampers on her. I don't know why alot of Mommies are giving Luvs such a bad rap...i've used then with all 4 of my children and love them! In fact, i personally think they are the best at keeping in explosions! And my 3 mo. old is good at those! ;) I also will put the Luvs on her at night as opposed to the Pampers, because Luvs keeps in leaks better! That's just my personal experience. I'd try one or both of those brands. FYI: Luvs is ALOT cheaper than Pampers!

Hi N.,
If its a night time issue ... there is a product at Babies R Us (and Toys R Us) called Diaper Doublers. Basically they look like maxipads without the plastic backing. You add them to a diaper at night and they help with extra absorbency. They are pretty cheap and come 30 in a pack for about $2.50 maybe? They are in a baby blue package and in the diaper section at the stores mentioned. Good Luck.

I wouldn't recommend luvs. Those are awful for chunky monkies. That's my baby girl. She does excellent with Pampers. Those are awsome. They go up higher on her back too. She has thighs and a booty that will knock you over! lol. And she's only 9 months. God, what did I do wrong. I am so in for it when she gets old enough to start dating. Hopefully that won't be for another 40 years though. :(
