I need help, I've been using Pampers Cruisers (and tried Pamper's Baby Dry and Huggies) and I always have the same problem-My son poops and it immediately goes up his back through his clothes!!! I can get to him seconds after or even during and it still happens!!! He is almost 6 months old and almost 20 lbs. I am using Stage 5 diapers, it happened with stage 2,3 and 4 too!! The only time this didn't happen was when I was using the swaddlers, but they don't make em passed a certain weight... He is ebf and will be for another month before I begin solids, and he is a several times a day pooper. So I need to know what to do now!! I go through several outfits a day and I feel bad for him because I am constantly changing him! Oh yah, I always make the diaper tight and I've tried making it looser and it still happens. And, I even fold in towards his back the tippity top part in the back to see if it would stop it and it doesn't!!! What have those of you have frequent poopers found works the best????

What can I do next?

I struggled with this as well. Try Huggies. The problem with Pampers and Luvs is the back waistband of the diaper has no elastic, so it doesn't grip. Huggies has it and it made a huge difference for us. Hopefully it will work for you. You could also get a few diaper covers, the plastic kind for cloth diapers. Gerber makes them. The elastic around the waist and legs helps catch the escaped stuff.

My 14 month old son is a big boy- 27 pounds! And he's only in size 4. Is your guy really needing a size 5? (I know bodies change though- my son's actually been in size 4 for almost 9 months!)

I agree with the mom who said try a plastic cover. There are plain ones (gerber) or really cute ones (try www.jilliansdrawers.com). Maybe a size 4 under a cover would solve your problem!

We used cloth diapers (Chloe Toes and Poquito pants) and never had a poop leak when my daughter happened to go in her pants.

We also did EC (elimination communication) where we'd offer our daughter a chance to poop/pee on a potty periodically throughout the day. EC saved us so many diaper changes because our daughter HATED being dirty and would use 5 clean diapers to finish one poop ;) Seriously she would hold it until she had a clean diaper under her, but once we started offering her the potty she'd get it all out in one go.

I'd say either try cloth or maybe get a couple of cloth diaper covers to go over the disposable diapers. Unless you have a local baby botique, look for diaper covers on-line; they are much better quality than the plastic pants you'd get in a regular department store.

Definitely go back to a size 3 (or 4). The problem is the diaper, not the size. You are probably making things worse being in a bigger size, actually. I knew it was time to go up a size once there was urine leakage, not poop leakage. Also I agree with someone else who said that Pampers were great in the size 1/2 stages for her baby. Once my boys got past that, Huggies worked better. I think the Supremes are what fit best for my boys--the others were leakers!

All that aside, I was a huge Pampers (daughter) and then Huggies (sons) fan until my 3rd baby, when I discovered that Costco's Kirkland-brand diapers were really great. I never had a leak on my boys in them, they were just as soft/comfortable and actually fit better. My second son never even made it to size 6 until he was potty training at age three (32 lbs).

Good luck!

Use huggies- it will save your clothes! I used to used pampers but I was tired of scrubbing out poop! I really like huggies and luvs.

You can try wrapping a cloth diaper around your son on top of the disposable diaper to help contain the mess. Then if the poop leaks upward it will mess up the cloth diaper and you won't have to change his whole outfit. Good luck!

I didn't read through your other responses, so sorry if I duplicate. First of - size 5 must be GIGANTIC on him. My son is a big boy, 1 year old and I used size 5 for a couple a weeks last month because someone gave them to me. Every morning his onsie was soaked and I had some poop issues too. Clearly, they were just too big. So I am thinking your 6 month old should be a 3 or a 4 at most.

Cruisers I find to be the best. They seem to have the best fit - have you tried a training type pant over them, just to keep the waist snug? Maybe even rubberized pants - do they even make them anymore?

Once you start solids, things should get easier. Those bf poops, albeit not so smelly, are often messy! Good luck.

My mother used to put my brother's diapers on backwards, and it seemed to help contain the poop and the pee. Good luck!

we use the eco-friendlier Seventh Generation. I think that Stage 3 is the number we used for our daughter when she was 20 lbs. Are you using diapers that are too big for him?

What is happening is totally normal for a breastfed baby. it will start to stay in the diaper when he begins solids and his poop gets thicker. it sucks i know. all of my children's clothes have gross stains on the backs up until 8mo or so. this soon will pass. ;-)

I had the exact same problem while my son was exclusively breastfed and I'm sorry to say I never found a solution. However, the silver lining is that the problem resolved itself once we introduced solids around 6 months, so hopefully it will be the same for you!

huggies overnights work usually good. Try and see what your baby is eating or how much formula.. he sounds to be pretty big for a 6 month old. Talk to the doctor about his size.. usually they are around 18 to 21 lbs. by age 1. He is probably small and round - and very cute.. but the diaper probably doesn't fit to well... See what the doctor says about cuting back on his food intake.. and you'll see a difference in how the diapers fit. Usually babies poop only once a day or every other day... good luck..

Hi J.,
I didn't think the day would come but you gave me a laugh. I now exactly what you are going through. The only answer I have for you is time. My son did that. We had emergency baths probably twice a day. Sometimes went through 5 outfits a day. Always pooped up the diaper. He is a breastfed baby. I didn't start him on solids until 6 months and that is what made the difference. I Used Luvs. I liked them the best. The size is also important. I did realize it happened even more when the diaper was getting smaller. For almost 20lbs you would probably be good with size 3. I remember being out getting haircuts for my stepsons. My son had an accident. Went to the car to clean him up and change him. Got back to the barber and 10 minutes later he did it again. Went and cleaned him up and changed him. We were on our way out and it happened again! I was out of clothes. I had to run to the nearest store to buy him something. I kept swearing something was wrong. I guess just some breastfed babies are like that. You just have to try to laugh and in time it will be over. If you want to start a little plain white baby rice that might thicken it up a little. Hang in there!

i had the same problem with my first son, huggies supreme seemed to "help" a bit as there is more elastic in the back. upside is that it wont last forever!

You should start to introduce some solids, like the cereals, he is certainly old enough to start!! And you can mix it in with the breast milk, i would think that should help. I also loved the Costco Kirkland brand diapers!!! They fit just like the pampers and cost so much less since you only buy them in bulk. And i would stick to the size that he is supposed to be in!!!! The bigger sizes are much more expensive and you get less diapers.....my son wasn't in a size 5 until about 2 years old!! Good luck!!

My kids' little butt cheeks made a PERFECT funnel - shot the studff strsight up to their shoulder blades! The trick is ti get the back of the diaper HIGH enough, and to have themm poop while upright IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.

You're already up to a size 5, so going bigger isn't really an option. LOL Just try to make sure more of the diaper is in the back than the front...and good luck!

Could it be that you're using diapers that are too big for his size? If the diaper is too big and loose around him, the poop will go right up his back. My daughter is 9 months and 22 lbs and we just went from Swaddlers size 2-3 to Cruisers size 3. I notice you said this didn't happen with Swaddlers. At 20 lbs, your son could still be in size 2-3 swaddlers (look at the box, it'll tell you the recommended size for the different size diapers), I don't know why you're using size 5 diapers. But either way, the smaller the diaper the more fit it will be around his body (you want it tighter rather than looser I think). When my daughter poops, sure the poop often travels upwards in her back, but the diaper always seems to catch it and I think it only happened 2 times that it actually traveled up her back and clothes. So my suggestion is revisit the diaper size. Good luck!

J., I would try all the diaper brands and find one that contains the poop. What a drag to be doing all that changing and all the laundry (plus stain removal)! Try the store brands like Target (we use them and they're great) and also try Luvs. If you can handle the laundry, you might try cloth diapers. We do that part time and we use the bumGenius diapers (all in ones) and we NEVER EVER had a poop leak. They work way better than disposables to that end. Also, go back to size 3 or 4 - for the amount of diapers you are changing, you get more diapers for your money in the smaller sizes. Your son will start to thin out as he gets more mobile, and you'll find the smaller diapers will fit better then, too. Good luck!

My 2 cents...
It's the poop, not the diapers - put him in the right size for his weight and then just wait it out! Not fun, but a phase that we called "poop-splosion" or "pumpkin soup". And after a singleton and twins that grew up on Pampers Cruisers exclusively (diapers.com delivers to the door with no shipping cost and in about 2 days), I finally discovered the advertising that Luvs has done is true - they are exactly the same as more expensive diapers and for much less! Good luck and invest in good stain remover! :)

Size 5 sounds HUGE. My 9 month old is just transitioning to size 3 and she's just about 18 lbs (yes, she's tiny). I use Luvs exclusively. I've used pampers and huggies as well (handed to me by other moms who didn't use them), but Luvs worked best for me.

I'd also try them on backwards as others suggested.

i would second the recommendation for cloth diapers. it's help my daughter's poops since she was 3 months old. she's also exclusively breastfed.

we use bumgenius 3.0 and growing greens. '

if not, i would also try other brands. before cloth, we had great success with 7th generation.

good luck!
