Diaper Rash - Havertown, PA

My 6 month old sleeps 12 hours at night now, I know... awesome (though she doesn't nap at all, it's a trade off I guess). BUT, she now has an awful diaper rash from sleeping in the same diaper for so long. I load on Buttpaste before she goes to bed, any other suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much Mamas! We got a lot of great advice and first hand experiences! I'm heading to CVS tomorrow to stock up on some of the good stuff you've recommended and my daughter will go for a bit of time "free" to air out! Have a wonderful day, ladies!

I have always found that triple paste works really well. My daughter was sensitive to some diaper creams, and they actually made her rashes worse. You could also try a diaper that is chlorine free. Maybe the chemicals in the diaper are irritating her skin when left on for a long period. Good luck!

Hi -

It looks like you received plenty of suggestions for various creams - all which work and you should be ok. I do recomend losing the baby wipes for a while and clean your child's bottom with a damp wash rag. Next be sure to "blot" her bottom dry with a clean cloth/towel. This step is really key. Then apply the diaper cream of choice (I'm a big fan of the 40% zinc desitin or burt's bees). Following this method...you should notice a big improvement with 24-48 hrs. It worked with both of my boys (when nothing else did).

Good luck!

if the rash lingers, it is most likely a yeast rash from the moisture. you have to cure the yeast. use a cream like Nysatin (rx) or an over the counter anti fungal cream. or...if u dont mind some mess and a purple bum, paint her bottom with Gentian violet, available at CVS or any other drug store. on top of the Fungal treatments use a zinc oxide cream to act as a barrier. we also LOVE A&D ointment. it has always helped clear up a diaper rash. once it clears, use a barrier (cream or vaseline) every night to keep the moisture from getting to her bum. we have battled every diaper rash imaginable. this has always worked for us! good luck!

i used buttpaste for awhile, and finally i found a 'resistant' rash... switched to desitin and that worked. if it is still resistant, it might be yeast, and at that point i'd go to the doc to see about a prescription.

I second Aquaphor - it's cleared up any diaper rash we've had and is also a great barrier if you put on a nice thick layer, especially with the nighttime diaper. If it doesn't clear up in a day or two, check with the doc about the yeast. Good luck!

sorry to hear about the diaper rash. my little girl has never had it that severe. but i always used "aquaphor." its made by eucerin. here is a link to the site. i got mine at a drug store. ive seen it in target too. its around 12 dollars for the tub but will last you all year. worked great on the spots my daughter had. i would put it on and the next morning it would be almost completely better. good luck.

Hi M.,
I raised two little ones and fought the terrible diaper rash that comes with teething and what ever.
Now that I am a grandmother and listening to the complimentary medicine scene - I started using Life Start a pro-biotic my Natren. I started with the 1/4 teaspoon and as she grew - made it a heaping 1/4 tsp and then 1/2 tsp. She is now 13 months and has had some redness from time to time, but not the terrible diaper rash that my children has or that her older sister had. I truly believe that his pro-biotic has made the difference.
Good luck. It is always such a heart breaker when your baby is so uncomfortable with diaper rash.

Try a different brand of diapers or Triple Paste diaper cream.

Besides all the diaper cream suggestions (and you may already be doing this) we had "bare bottom time" as part of our daughter's bedtime routine while she was a baby, and it helped keep diaper rash at bay. Keeping everything aired out will prevent yeast from growing in the first place, so that your diaper cream can be more effective later. We often just laid out a bunch of cloth prefolds on the floor and let her roll around for about 15-20 minutes before we took her up to bed. It was fun, we got to play on the floor with her, too. :)

And even though she's 2 now, we still have to resort to bare bottom time on occasion as she'll still get a yeasty rash sometimes. So we'll let her play on the deck with just a dress or t-shirt on, even just once a day, and it helps.

Good luck, it's hard to see that rash on your little one!

We use the lanolin that was left over from breastfeeding my daughter. It seems to work better than any diaper ointment we have tried so far.

Hi M.,
Just a few thoughts.

Are you using an overnight diaper like Huggies? I use them on my 2 year old son and they really do help, he is an 11- 12 hour sleeper too. I also use corn starch powder as well.

Another option would be to change her diaper before you and your husband go to bed, unless it would wake her up of course. If that isn't an option, I would change her one last time right before she goes to bed.

Good luck!!

My kids have very sensitive skin and suffered from some severe diaper rash. Calmoseptine seemed to work very well. Pharmacy stores sell it. Depending on where you buy it, it would either be with the regular baby stuff or you may have to ask the pharmacist for it. It is not a prescription.

I love Burt's Bees diaper cream (thick barrier, medicated, and very kind to sensitive skin). Also, I agree, a careful diaper change while she's sleeping might help. If I time it right, I can normally change a diaper without waking my little one up all the way.

Good luck!

Caldescene powder works miracles! I couldn't get my little girl's rash to go away with butt paste either. and i got the caldescene powder from walgreens and it worked like a charm. My mother in law says to first put some dial soap in the bathtub and let the baby soak in it for a bit and then use the caldescene powder, but i have found the powder still works great without the dial soap.

Hi M.! Go to your nearest Giant Eagle pharmacy and ask for Pinxav (pronounced pink sav). It is $4.95 for a 4oz tube that will last a while. If they don't have it they CAN order it. I discovered the wonders of Pinxav when I lived in Ohio. A friend of mine was a nurse at Akron's Children Hospital/Medical center and she told me about it. It is amazing! FYI the pharmacy at the North Versaills Giant Eagle ordered it for me before so if your Giant Eagle has a question about it have them call North Versailles. You can also order it on line at www.pinxav.com Best wishes.

It may be your daughter has a yeast rash instead of a diaper rash - try putting on some lotrimin cream - if it is yeast you should see an improvement within a day or two.

I used to check my kids diapers before I went to bed and change it if it was wet. They rarely woke up.
