What's your best diaper rash cureall? The baby (1 year) is on medicine for ear infection and now has a nasty rash on his bottom. Its not a yeast infection, I've had him to the doc for that prior and its not pimply like a yeast infection. Its more just red and the skin is broke in a few places. I can't use wipes on him b/c he cries. I have been putting A&D ointment and Johnson & Johnson diaper rash cream on....anything else i can try? I've been feeding him yogurt in hopes the probiotics will help clear it up & put a bit of baking soda in his bath so soak in to balance his PH. I have an appt on Friday with the doc but would like to help him heal sooner rather than later. I make sure I frequently change his diapers and we haven't switched anything lately so I'm pretty sure its not an allergic reaction to anything. Any tips?

What can I do next?

when I can't use wipes (or I'm out), I just use warm water to wet very soft paper towels. Works wonders.

some Moms rinse out the wipes.

& I'm leaning toward yeast....it's the red that gives it away. :)

I, too, suggest it's a yeast infection. A yeast infection doesn't have to have pimples that are now visible. The broken skin could've been a pustule before it broke. Antibiotics frequently cause yeast infections. I've not ever tried it but you could try smearing plain yogurt on his bottom. I've read that can help.

The purpose of using greasy ointments is to protect the skin from moisture. They seal out the wet. I suggest that when there are open sores that ointments are probably not the best thing to use because they also seal out air which is needed for healing. I would leave him diaper free as much as possible and apply a cream made for athlete's foot which is also a yeast infection.

Here is a web site about yeast diaper infections. http://www.emedicinehealth.com/yeast_infection_diaper_ras...

Many of my son's yeast infections were "just" red. And then red & broken & bleeding.

He turned out to be allergic to WIPES (esp the hypoallergenic ones, those would give him blisters). The wipe allergy degraded the skin, and whatever germs were around (usually yeast, but sometimes bacteria) moved on in and partied down. Poor kid. It took us a loooong time to figure out what was up with him.

Point being... We used wet paper towels from then on out (hot water, wrong out, poof! Magic!). So if the wipes are stinging her cuts, just use damp paper towels. (Think about it... You don't use soap every time you wipe, right? Babies rarely need washing every time they pee/poo, either).

If its fungal or bacteria ... The diaper cream will make things worse. Trapping the microbes, instead of being a urine blocker.

I alternated Neosporin & antifungals cream when my son started getting red/broken skin. Results in HOURS. Cleared up in a day. Awesome.

DONT FORGET:

Tylenol / ibuprofen is for PAIN.
If her skin is broken, that hurts. A dose or half dose of either will help. Not to cure it, but will help her.

AND

If these are recurrent ... Try ditching wipes altogether & try different diaper brands. Lots of kids are allergic to one or more brands of diaper.

Have you tried raw extra virgin coconut oil? It works like a dream! Coconut oil is also an anti fungal, so it will keep yeast at bay. I used it for diaper rash when my kids were little and it healed bad diaper rashes in just a few hours.

I hope you find a solution soon!

I would at least give the anti-fungal stuff a try, seriously. I would usually apply the cream (either anti fungal or I like Burt's Bees and Boudreaux's) and then cover it liberally with either Vaseline or Aquaphor. They act as a barrier and keep the cream from rubbing off too quickly and plus keep it moist. I found that helped, especially at night.

Most likely the antibiotics are causing the diaper rash. This is a normal side effect when kids are on antibiotics. They totally screw up the natural gut flora. My best cure all is to clean with unscented wipes or warm water and a soft cloth. Since wiping hurts him try to dab as much as you can and then to one quick wipe at the end. Let air dry. Apply Lanisoah Diaper cream. It works amazing and I won't use anything else with my kids. It can be hard to find and is pricey. The rash probably won't totally go away until the antibiotics have totally cleared his system. GL and hope it gets better soon.

the best thing I've ever used is corn starch. buy pure corn starch baby powder! Put it on with every diaper change. The ointments mostly act like a barrier, not a cure. My mother and grandmother used pure corn starch from the box. But you can buy pure corn starch baby powder. That's all I ever used and worked like a charm for all 5 of my kids.

Mix 1 tube Desitin Cream, 1 tube Triple Antibiotic (Neosporin or equivalent), and one tube Clotrimazole cream. Apply liberally.

Also, only purchase unscented wipes.

If the above cream doesn't work out....

I know folks who have used browned flour with great success (the Amish swear by this remedy). You put regular flour in a pot on the stove and whisk it until it's browned (not burnt), then put it in the freezer to keep. Dust it on like baby powder during diaper changes.

I also know folks who swear by Crisco. This is great if the rash is caused by moisture, and moisture is further aggravating it, because it really protects the skin.

Every time one of my kids was on an antibiotic, or certain ones, he got this and it was awful. I called the doctor to see if I could stop the meds and try a different one and they said no. I found putting him in the tub for a bit at least helped with the pain and got air to it. When he was off the antibiotic it went away. I don't know how much longer he has on the medication but hopefully not too much longer. Air it out as much as you can without a diaper.
