Help! My daughter has had a very bad diaper rash for 5 days now. I started by using Balmex creamy. Which I have used before and it worked but after 2 days it seemed worst so I started using a prescription strength medication the Doctor prescribed last time she had a bad rash. He said she had also gotten an infection with that rash last time. However the prescription stuff isn't working either. Her poor little butt is so red and tender all she did today was cry and whine. Is there anything else out there I can use. I really need the Help.

What can I do next?

Thanks to everyone who sent in a response the help was great. I went and bought the Beaudreux Buttpaste. It worked great within 24 hrs I saw a major difference. Her rash as only a few trace spots left and it doesn't hurt her at all anymore. Thanks again for everyone's suggestions.

hi A. - try plain old vaseline. I found this helped with my daughter the best - sometimes the cream can irritate the rash.

What I use when my daugther gets a really bad rash (it works great) is Lotrimen. It normally really helps and we have gone through some really bad rashes with her screaming too. Once the regular diaper rash creme doesn't work then I try Lotrimen because it normally is a yeast infection. I would try it.

She may be teething, they have runny diapers because of all the drooling which will lead to the diaper rash. Try to let her go bare bottom as much as you dare and then use Beaudreux Buttpaste. It works great and smells pretty good too.

Good Luck!

When we first moved down here a few months ago my daughter got a really bad rash too, at some points it was bleeding. Because of the Navy I couldnt take her to the doctor because my husband was only here for school for the first month so we werent "officially transferred" here and we didnt have our medical switched here. My gradmother spoke to a nurse at her church who told her to put her in a small warm bath with baking soda and vinegar for about 20 mins and to put the anti-fungal foot cream on her rash (to go back and forth with the diaper rash cream) All I ended up doing was putting the anti-fungal cream on it like twice day for a couple days and it cleared up. OH...I also left her diaper off and bare bottomed as much as possible. Put a layer of towels down in her pack and play (incase she pees/poops) and let her bottom air out every so often. My daughters rash cleared up REALLY quick. Good luck and let me know how it turns out! ____@____.com

Hi A.,
I have this problem a lot with ym son, now 15 months old. What happens is it starts as a normal diaper rash and then the yeast on his body starts to over react and it turns into a yeast infection...you can take her to the dr and get a differnt kind of medication, but the cheapest thing to do is buy a box of monistat and use the cream out of the box on her bottom, usually i see results in a few hours after starting....hope this helps

Dear A.,
Three things. Use sea salt (instead of table salt) to make a sponge bath. Make enough to bottle and pour a 1/2 cup to 1 cup on her bottom to clean as needed. about 1 Tsp to a litrer of water. Pat her both dry with cloth. Use a thin film of olive oil to soothie the area to keep it from cracking. Leave her bottom bare for 20 minutes. Place white cotton panties without top clothes as long as you are indoors. Or a long dress just above her ankles. This dress will protect her skin while her bottom air drys. Use corn starch as powder when you have to put diapers on at night or when you go out during the day. When you return home, leave the diapers off. You don't have to use soap or cream or antiseptics or antibiotics. Sea salt is antispetic. The olive oil helps heal and breathe. Corn starch absorbs excess moisture and bind it away from the surface of the skin. Nor does corn starch scratch like silicones in talc powder. Often overnite you can see the difference. Within 3 days you should see significant healing. God bless!

I see that you've had many responses to your query and I haven't had a chance to read them all. I thought I'd give you my view on the diaper rash situation. My daughter recently had a horrible diaper rash that was even bleeding due to a stomach virus. I have used the Butt Paste which you are using now since my daughter was born and it had always worked great until the bad rash. My daughters doctor prescribed her the usual thing and also told me to use a spray bottle and clean wash clothes for every diaper change. He said that wiping would only make it worse. Well that worked for a while and the rash eventually cleared up for the most part but then out of no where it came back. I didn't know what to do and I mentioned it to my mother in law who told me back in the day (LOL) they used to use corn starch cause there weren't any other choices. I was kind of afraid to use it though because I read that it's bad for the baby's lungs but I asked the doctor and he said it was fine. I have been using it ever since and it's the only thing that works. I have to put it on at every diaper change and if I don't the rash will come back. So if you run into a problem were the rash will not go away and your current methods aren't working I'd definitely try the corn starch. You can find it in the same place you find baby powder and it lasts forever and it's soooo much cheaper than the Butt paste. Good luck and I hope this was helpful.

This happened to my daughter at times, too. Here a couple of things to try before you call the doctor again.

1. Stop with the wipes and use wet paper towels. She may be so incredibly sore that you have to stop with irritating wipes. She may even need you to use a washcloth for a day or two.

2. Run up the stove and brown some flour. Let it cool and then put it on her rash lightly. This will help her to keep her a little drier and works better than baby powder or corn starch! Sounds, kooky, I know, it did to me, too, but it works!

3. Try letting her stay naked from the waist down for a few minutes after you clean her up so she can dry off naturally. She may not be dry enough to put that diaper on yet when you do it right away.

4. To help soothe, you may want to try blowing on it, too. That rash probably burns a little and and little coolness can't hurt.

If these ideas will not work (give them a couple days), then I would definitely call her doctor again to get it checked out.

May God bless you!

You have already had a ton of advice. Luckily my son is not prone to diaper rash. However he had a bad intestinal virus last year that gave him runny diarrhea for 10 days. Anyones bottom would have a rash after that. I was using creamy desitin and our pediatricain recommended the original formula. There is a huge difference! It stays on much better. I think the best thing that helped, was not using wipes and using a wet soft cloth and many times I didnt even do that, I stuck him under the faucet in the tub and rinsed him off to avoid rubbing it. Then I would let him run around without a diaper on. To avoid messes, we played for 10-15 minutes at a time in the bathroom, that way if he did go, it was easier to clean up. Good luck and I hope you find what works for you.

Hi A.,

My son gets real bad rashes as well & the one thing that we use that helps out a lot is a cream that has zinc oxide - 1% in it. Aveno & Johnson & Johnson makes them, as well as others I'm sure. It dries out the areas then goes away. It take a few days but it's not so sore to the touch. Hopefully this helps if the rash isn't anything like a yeast infection then this won't work.

Once the rash gets this bad, stop using wipes and simply use very soft kleenex and warm water to wipe her down after each diaper change... the chemicals in wipes can make the rash worse. Let her dry completely, even blow on her to make sure she's totally dry. Then, seriously COAT HER LITTLE BEHIND with Balmex, Desitin, whatever you use... use it so much that you think you must be crazy! :) Change her as soon as her diaper is wet or dirty and slowly but surely, it should get better... if not, see her pediatrician. Is she on antibiotics for anything? That always made my daughter's rash MUCH worse.

Good luck!

My sister had a problem like this with her daughter. Turned out that she was having a reaction to the perfumes in the disposable diapers. It wasn't like that from birth. It happeed when she got a bit older. The Dr. recommended that she go to cloth diaper for a while to see if it would help and within a couple of day she saw a huge difference. She eventually went to generic diaper because they ddin't have the perfumes that the name brand has. (I think she ended up using Luvs)I hope her discomfort comes to an end soon!

In this case, it might take a day or so if it's a bad case, but it should do the job. Just apply it after each change/wiping and you'll be amazed.

Hi A.,
Have you tried airing out her bottom. Let her run around in the house with out a diaper on. This does help! Give her a bath every day. Keep putting on the ointment when she has her diaper on. My granddaughter had this same problem. I told my daughter to let her run around with out a diaper on in the house for about 15 minutes at a time throughout the day. I know this means she may have little accidents around the house but it really does help. The bath every night before bedtime also helped and then a quick rinse off in the morning everyday. I also told her to always put Vaseline on my granddaughter's bottom every diaper change because it prevents her urine from sitting on her skin. Even if she didn't have a diaper rash because like I said it prevents one from happening. She also changes Briauna's diaper during the night at least once. Diaper rashes are h*** o* our little ones but usually can be prevented with applying ointments on with every diaper change and the bath at night and rinse off in the morning. Good luck with your precious little one!

Hi! I had the same problem with both of my children. I actually used a few of the diaper rash medications, none of which worked, some of which made the rash worse. What worked the best for me was using Aquaphor (made by Eucerin) and cornstarch baby powder. I know doctors say not to use powder, but I make sure not to "cloud" it up. Aquaphor is similar to vaseline, but has some additional ingredients (mineral oil, lanolin, etc.). You can find it in where they sell the baby items. It's a little expensive compared to vaseline, but well worth it.

He siad to put that on her 1-2 times daily for 2 weeks and the diaper rash cream every time until the rash cleared up, but of course if it got worse, to call him. her father was skeptical but it's actually in The Baby Book, which says o also use a 1% hydrocortisone cream as well.

I would take her to the DR, my daughter had a rash that kept getting worse a few weeks back, all the diaper rash creams made it worse and it started to spread, I finally took her to the DR and found out it was a yeast infection and we had to use prescription ointment(Nystatin) and it took over a week but it looks back to normal now. Along with using this medicine we let her air out alot since as soon as we put the diaper on the cream seemed to just rub off. I hope this helps.

Lotrimin althlete's foot cream works the best I just put it on my daughter for 2 days and it worked! Make sure you only use it only when she needs itand on her but not in her sensitive girly areas! Also I found that just putting baby powder in her diaper every changing prevents the diaper rash from coming back you see it absorbs all the wetness! I would not try vaseline especially if she has a bad rash!

My kids react horribly to Balmex. It makes their diaper rash worse, so I know how you feel. I use Bag Balm. http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/102-###-###-####-###-###...
Here is the website for it on Amazon.com. You should be able to find it in the grocery store though. It has the consistency of Vaseline, and I use it religiously for diaper rash. My 2 kids haven't had a diaper rash that lasted for longer than 1 day since I started using that stuff, and if I can put it on as soon as their little bottoms turn red the diaper rash is completely gone the next time I change their diaper. My mother used it on myself and my brothers, and I know people at work that have used it or do currently use it for the same purpose. Like I said, they sell it in the grocery store for about $5.50. It comes in a square, green tin and will last forever.

Hello A.!

My son just turned two, but around 9 - 14 months he seemed to be battling diaper rash quite often, so I know how painful it is to watch them hurt. (It broke my heart too) So two tips for you that worked IMMEDIATELY for my beautiful boy. Now the first one was advice from my son's pediatrician - it sounded extremely strange, but it worked fastere than any diaper rash cream on the market. He told me to buy an anti-fungal cream and maalox. Clean the area gently w/ water, then apply pour a little capful of maalox on it and just a little bit of the anti-fungal foot cream to the severe parts. His rash was completely gone in 2-3 days. Strange as it sounded, it really worked. I researched on the internet best cures for diaper rash and on many sites stated that the very best things is air. Give your baby some naked time as much as possible. I have been using this since my son was a year old now, and I don't need any diaper rash ointments at all, he doesn't get rashes anymore. The rule is at least 15 minutes of air exposure with every diaper change, but I didn't feel like that was enough, so I started with letting him take his nap in the buff. (Just make sure the temperature is very comfortable in his nap area so you won't have to cover him up w/ a blanket.) I would also spread out a large picnic blanket in the living room and keep him and his toys on that, there will be accidents, and they are no fun to clean up, but it is so worth it to never see them in pain again because of a diaper rash. My son hasn't had one in a year, so I truly believe daily air time with no diaper or clothes is the best thing you could do for your little one! I hope this helps. Oh yea! I also started giving him a quick bath after every poopie - I think that helps alot too!

What is the prescription? It could be more than just a rash. It could possible be a yeast infection. Have you tried Nystatin? Some people will say to try one of the female yeast infections creams, but this one is cheaper. I'm not sure if you really need a prescription for it or it you just get it from behind the pharmacists counter. (When I needed it while on vac. in Canada, I did not need a prescription, but they have different laws). This worked really well. If that does not work, there is another cream, which I can't recall the name right now since I'm at work & can't check. It comes in a small tub and has something like silver nitrate - I'm not exactly sure but it "zaps" any raw skin. This worked well for my baby when the Nystatin didn't. Let me know if you have tried either of these and/or if you need the name of the other prescription.

Also, call the Dr. and tell them that the prescription isn't working as I'm sure they can prescribe something different

At my daughter's 15 month check-up 4 months ago coincided with a rash that she just developed (on her inner thy). I tried Balmex and other "diaper rash" creams, but nothing worked. My pediatrician said to use a little bit of over-the-counter Cortisone cream (Walmart brand is really cheap).

I applied the 1% lotion and in 24 hours it was completely gone. My Ped said that if it was a yeast infection/rash, the cortisone would make it worse, and I'd have to get a prescription cream. Try a wee bit of 1% Cortisone and it should clear up!

Dear A.,

I have something that works. I went through this with my youngest daughter and it drove me crazy. I tried cloth diapers, cleams, vitamins, sunshine, baths, powders, you name it and nothing worked until a friend gave me a formula that worked. Formula; equal amounts of cortizone 10, zinc oxide with A & D, and Malox. Mix in equal amounts and use liberally. The rash will start healing within hours. The cortizone kills the pain, the zinc coats the skin and the malox neutralizes the acid in the urine. I even used this on my elderly mother who was bedridden and it worked wonderfully. She never got bed sores! It might sound weird but I PROMISE it works.

Could it be thrush? That is a red bumpy rash and doesn't clear up with normal cream. It is caused by Candida albicans, the same organism that causes yeast infections. It clears up with lotrimen or monostat. You can look it up online to see some photos to see if it compares.

My kids have had some nasty ones too due to meds they were on. Anyway, what we've done is use the aveeno oatmeal bath.. get a bucket and put water in it, drop this bath stuff in it and smear it on the bottom for a little bit. Just leave her on a towel because it's messy. Then just keep putting it on her for a bit like a sponge bath type thing if that makes sense. This will help it to feel better.
Then make sure she's really dry, put more balmex or whatever you're using and then we would also put a corn starch over the cream which keeps it dryer. Don't rub all the balmex off when you change her the next time, try to keep a base on and let it build up a bit (this gives it a protective coating). Just get the poop off.
Hope this helps :)

My daughter got a really bad diaper rash once where her skin was so red it had peeled and the poor thing would cry everytime she peed. Anyway, the doctor she had back then gave me a "home remedy" that worked very good for her. Take 1/3 vaseline, 1/3 desitin original (not the creamy), and 1/3 baby powder (cornstarch), and you just mix it all together in a container and use it every time you change her diaper. This worked great for my daughter, I hope it works for yours.

Ok, here goes. I know it sounds strange. My husband heard about it on sports talk radio (for what that's worth!) and my son always seems to get pretty bad diaper rash. So we bought Bag Balm. It's a little green square tin filled with a vaseline type product (it may even be the same) but you can only find it, ready? ...on the pet isle. We found it at Walmart in the pet section. It's meant for chapped skin around the utters of a cow!!!! But my husband swears by it and I won't deny it does work. Hubby always wants to give it as a shower gift but I'm too embarrased. So if you are desperate and if desperate times call for desperate measures - try it.

That's the best I can do. Besides always giving them a bath to clear the urine off of her bottom. Maybe your wipes are irritating it more? Try using just warm water and a wash cloth.

Good luck. C.

Yes as a matter of fact, try lettin her sit in lukewarm baths for about 10 mintes at a time and let her go without a diaper as long as possible, the air will allow the rash to dry out as keeping a diaper on all the time will trap in moisture and cause the infection to get really yucky. Also a product that has worked wonders and very fast is Boudreauxs butt paste.. they sell it at Wal Mart--- heres the link... http://www.buttpaste.com/
And heres some testimonials...

My 7 month old daughter got a very severe yeast infection on her bottom. I went to the doctor and got the "special cream" and after 4 days of it not looking any better I decided to add butt paste to the daily routine of her meds, since I knew that it worked so well on diaper rashes. After just one day the infection was pink rather than bright red!

My 4 month had a horribly red heat rash under his arms and and in neck skin. After 2 weeks of doctor appointments and several different unsuccessful attempts to make it go away, a friend suggested the Butt Paste. In one day it looked so much better. I couldn't believe it. It's now part of all of my new baby gifts.

I try Boudreaux's Butt Paste, which I had never heard of. I was at first taken aback at the price, however, I figured if it worked for my daughter it was worth it. I decided to wait until I had given my daughter her nightly bath to use the "butt paste". I used it that night and mind you it was on the worst diaper rash I have ever seen and it was raw and bleeding. The paste was thick and my daughter gave no protest when I applied it to her bottom and genital area. The next morning I was amazed and shocked! Her severe diaper rash that had been raw and bleeding was gone-completely gone. Her bottom and "tutu" were a pretty peachy color the same as the rest of her skin. This product is a miracle worker and I will now invest in the larger 16 oz. tub for both home and daycare. Thank you so much for making something so wonderful. This first time mom truly and sincerely thanks you from the bottom of my heart!
