Diaper Leak?

I woke up last night to my 17 month old daughter saying "owie" over and over again. This is not normal for her to wake in the middle of the night and actually say something. So I went in her room and picked her out of her crib, she was still laying down. Much to my surprise she was soaking wet. Her pajamas were soaked and now so was I. Her diaper was heavy but not bloated and she kept saying "owie" and of course "night night" because she wanted to go back to bed. I changed her pj's and diaper and put her back to bed. I know this is kinda a silly request/question but this has never happened before and I am wondering if something is wrong or maybe even possibly that her diaper is too small.

What can I do next?

Try goign up a size for the diapers at night. they will absorb more.

As for her saying Owie. I would guess it was he was of saying she didn't like being wet & it was the only word in her vocabulary that fit the situation for her. Unless she is in discomfort when she actually pees I would not worry about it.

Have u heard of nitetime diapers? I ask this because I work in a daycare and well the owners little girl has to have nitetime diapers on even to take a nap, because otherwise she soaks everything. So I would try those if you can find them. They work very well.

It's possible that she just had a little too much to drink before bedtime and had a really good urine output in the middle of the night. Even the best diapers can't always keep up. However, and I'm sure you would know by now, sometimes heavy urine output with pain can signal a urinary tract infection. Check for signs of fever and call your pediatrician if you have any concerns. If it's just an occasional thing, I wouldn't worry.

I would try going up a size... I do not think there is anything wrong. If that does not work try using a different barnd diaper for night time. The soaking wet and waking up in the middle of the night happened to my daughter everytime she out grew her diaper and needed to go up a size. It also happened when she had more fluids before bed then normal, so the diaper would overflow.

Ask your little one where the owie is at, maybe something does hurt and she was playing around the diaper and that is how she got wet. It could simple be she was saying owie because she was wet and did not like it.

Hi T.,
When my daughter was little, she did sometimes just leak, depending on what position she was in, etc. When it happened a few times in a row, though, we knew she needed to go up a diaper size. I'm also a foster mom, and we tried that trick with a little boy we were caring for, and he still just SOAKED his diaper every night and usually his pajamas as well. We finally had to get the Huggies Overnight diapers and that took care of the pajama soaking. Good luck!

What I do with my little one is buy the Nighttime diapers that are like pullups cause they absorbe more fluid, for helping them get through the night.

This frequently happens to my boys as toddlers. It could be that she needs a bigger diaper, or the diaper may have been in the wrong position to catch all the liquid: fastened a little too loose, slightly twisted, pulled down in front, etc. Sometimes it happens when they sleep on their stomach too long, causing all the pee to land in the front of the diaper only and leak out.
You can start with a bigger diaper. That won't cause any problems as long as it can still fit snuggly around her legs.
We also check our son's diaper before we go to bed and change it if he is wet. He rarely wakes up during the process.
If she goes to bed with a water bottle or sippy, get rid of it. The number of leaks in our house went down dramatically when we took away the bed sippy. We still give him a drink before bed and leave it on his dresser, but he can't lie there and drink and drink and drunk.

for a while i used a bigger size at night so that it could absorb all the pee.
maybe give that a try.
