Diaper Issue at Night

My 8 week old daughter is starting to sleep for longer periods at night. YIPPIE! Last night she slept for almost 5 1/2 hours at one time. I was so pleased and thankful to get a nice amount of sleep. However, when I went to get her after she woke, she was soaked. Her diaper had saturated during that time and leaked. We have been using the Huggies Newborns. She is a tiny little girl and the newborns are all that fits. The size 1 is way too big. I felt so bad for her as her entire pj outfit as well as the sheet were soaked. Do any of you have an idea of what we can do to prevent this? I want her to sleep for as long as she can but am now worried about her soaking herself if she goes longer than 3 hours.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First of all, thank you to all of those who responded. The advice was very appreciated. We have switched to Pampers and also gone up a size. So far, so good. No leaks during the day or at night. She even slept 5 1/2 hours the other night with no issues!

My daughter (Now 1) still wears pampers swaddlers. We tried huggies and Loves, and Target brands and none worked! Go with the swaddlers!

Use doubled cloth diapers with rubber pants. They are old fashioned but effective, and much, much cheaper than any brand of disposables in the long run.

I haven't seen a difference between Huggies and Pampers in terms of quality or preventing blowouts. However, I've noticed that the Pampers run smaller than Huggies in the same size range. So, I use Pampers when my son is at the smaller end of a size range and Huggies when he is at the larger end of the range.

Try different brand. Huggies leaked so I switched to Pampers and it worked. Also, Even if it is too, big try the next diaper size. It helped me as well, even if he is in the weight range of that size.

H.,
I agree, I can't stand Huggies...on my third baby now and still can't stand them. For as much as diapers cost, you don't want to waste them (doubling up, etc). Pampers Swaddlers are amazing. We had to use the preemie, newborn and are now in the 1's, and we've never had an issue. But it is true that once they do start wetting out of them (or filling them quickly) it's time to size up. Good luck! It sounds like you have a little angel!

huggies always leaked for us too.. so did luvs.. so we ended up with the pampers swaddlers... but didn't use a bigger size as some of the other posters have mentioned (nowadays we use huggies nighttimes at night now for my 2 y.o. and they work great.. but I think those start at size 4).

good luck and enjoy your extra sleep!

From my experience, your problem is that you are using Huggies. I had the same problem with my last baby. I don't know if they changed them or what, but I absolutely refuse to use Huggies anymore. I was so upset with the ruined clothes from using Huggies. I will never buy them again! I came very close to writing them a letter when my youngest was a newborn out of sheer frustration. I use Luv's now, and find them to work great. Who would have thought since they are so much less expensive?

Blessings,

try going up one size. my dd was tiny too, but she could sure pee. We had huggies and loved them. We stated with pampers, but that weaved thingie in them gave her horrid diaper rash. In fact i have had discussions on other boards about how often pampers causes diaper rash......try switching. you never know what may work for you.

Congrats on your new baby!

The size one diapers may seem too big, but if she is leaking then a step up in size will probably fix it. YOu could just use the size ones for bedtime. With my babies I could not alway tell when they were ready for a bigger sized diaper, the smaller ones would still fit but then leaks would start, that is always how I could tell it was time to move up a size. Oh, and I really liked the Luvs diapers for my babies.

I would switch to cloth at night. You can pack a cloth diaper with a lot of absorbency and they are so cute! Other than that, you will need to go up to a size 1. My kids were tiny too but I could usually fold the bigger diaper so that it fit.

Althought Huggies claim to have that unique hour-glass design, they COMPLETELY SUCK! They leak like crazy as they have less space where you need it to catch things from the inside coming out. They are also very prone to blow-outs for the same reason. I have had total luck with the Pampers (the Swaddlers one (Crusisers when she gets older), not Baby Dry) brand. For night time, I place the 'next size up' on my little one. So if she wears a 4 during the day, use a 5 at night. It may seem a little big on the torso, but all that space is great! For us it worked really well.
Good luck.

Huggies do that! I hated them. I got a pack from the baby shower and also size 2 that Christmas for future use and they leaked too. At first I thought it was just the newborn, but when 5 out of 7 leaked of the size 2, I refused to buy them. I use Pampers Baby Dry on my 1 year old because he got a rash from the mesh in the Cruisers, but I used the Swaddlers on him at that age and don't need a bigger size. I love Pampers!!! Target brand is ok but they were really crunchy until they got full. Dont use Huggies or White Cloud. Hope this helps!

Put her in the bigger size at night, even tho it is huge. It will absorb more. That's what I do. I also get Huggies overnight diapers. But I don't know if they make them in newborn sizes. But get size 1 for overnight. It will help a lot.

Sorry to tell you, but Huggies is your problem. Everytime I have used a Huggie diaper on my kids, the same thing happens. Try switching to Pampers swaddlers and see if there is an improvement. You are right that going to a size that is too big in a itty bitty newborn is not going to do much good. But, I would try the swaddler newborn size and also the size 1 as sizes are different with different brands. Good luck, and trust me on this one unless your baby is drinking copious amounts that no diaper can handle!

We used to have the same problem. I found Huggies to be the least reliable of virtually all the diaper brands that we tried, but we tried them first because that's what the hospital sent home with us. The best we found was Luvs. They do make smaller sizes and we found them to be the most absorbant. My daughter did great in them. My son was more prone to diaper rash with Luvs, so we tried Pampers and while they weren't as absorbant as Luvs, they were definitely more absorbant than the Huggies, and they also had the elastic tape. Hope this helps. Congratulations and good luck!

I did the same thing Rachel did...I bought the larger size at night too. You can really cinch down the waist on those to help too. We're Costco brand fans, before that it was Huggies, but each diaper fits differently. Its experimentation to find the right one.

I'm not sure if your daughter is a deep sleeper but you might want to try changing her 30 minutes or and hour into sleep especially if she just fed.I know you probably don't want to disturb her once she has fallen asleep,I use to do this with my son when he was a baby(he is now two)I would wait until I knew he was like really asleep and give him a quick change before I was out for the night.Well good luck and congrats on your new bundle of joy!

double up at night. Use her normal size and then put one size bigger on top of the other. My daughter had the SAME problem and that was the only thing that worked for her.

My favorite brand was always Pampers because I had skinny babies and the fit was so good on a thin baby. We used the swaddlers until we were done with size one and from then on just the regular. Never a leak, not even with major runny poo. We still use Pampers as our reliable overnight diaper on our 3 year old. If you join the Pampers club you get great coupons. I found by using my coupons and a store coupon I could save as much as $7 a package making them cheaper than generics.

I found that the Pampers diapers worked much better for me than the Huggies. They are a little more expensive, but you will probably have less laundry to do :). Another thing you can try is to double up the diaper at night. If it leaks through the diaper, the second one will hopefully catch what the first one didn't. I had to do this with my first daughter when she was potty training at night because she peed SO much at night. They go through stages. Good luck with your sweet little one. :)

I've used Huggies Overnites for over 2 yrs and have never had an accident. They work great on long car trips and airplanes as well. They start in size 3 (16 lbs). This probably won't help you now, but it will later down the road. As for now, I would try a few different brands to see which ones fit the best w your daughter. Every brand is different.

Put her in bigger diapers at night. You can tighten them around the waist. My son did this alot and I found if I bought the next size up they worked great, able to absorb more liquid and they were big however they weren't so big they didn't fit. Try another brand too, funny as the Target brand diapers were my best bet. I bought the expensive Pampers for my first born, then on a budget with my second I did trial and error with a lot of brands. Target Brand diapers were the best for blowouts, just get the next size up.
Seeing she is 8 weeks, newborn diapers are probably not equipped or too small for her. You need to allow room for fillup at night and naptimes.

YOu might try a different kind of diaper. My favorites were the pampers brand. They seem to work the best in my experience. You could also try changing her after 3 hours or so. All babies are different but my daughter would always sleep through her diaper changes when she was young.

I'd try size ones, at least at night. In my experience, once the diapers start leaking at night, it's not very long before you need them during the day, too. I know the ones seems really big, but they do cinch down really well. GL! Enjoy your sleep.

I had this same problem and it didn't matter what brand I used. I ended up getting the next size up for night only. It did the trick with my boys, but I had them in snug pjs. I don't think it would work if they were loose. I've also seen someone suggest before, another time this question was posted, to put a menstrual pad inside the diaper. Seems to me it would work. Hope one of the suggestions works!

H., I have a 14 month old little girl and I have tried every brand of diaper there is, I personally prefer pampers and I tried using the larger size at night and buying the little inserts for night time but nothing seemed to work as good. My baby has slept through the night since she was 4 months old and the pampers have worked the best. Good luck!
