Diaper Fail

My almost six month old is finally sleeping (mostly) through the night. He goes to bed at 6pm and I wake him for his last feeding around 10:30pm. He is usually asleep until five or six in the morning. I change him at the 10:30 feeding, but despite the fact he would sleep through the night he has a massive diaper leak about every other night that wakes the poor little guy up. I have tried: pamper, huggies, luvs, and g diapers all to no avail. I want to sleep, I miss it. Do any of you ladies have any ideas? I looked for the "night diapers" we used with my other son, but I couldn't find them below a size 4. (he is still in the 2's) Please help and thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

You ladies are wonderful! We went up a size and sweet blessed sleep was mine! If I have another diaper fail I now have an arsenal of ideas, thank you! Oh and Meg, we use G Diapers when the little man is home during the day. I wish I had the time or laundry capacity for cloth, but these are fantastic and compostable: http://www.gdiapers.com/ and as an added bonus the stir stick for the potty was a great conversation starter at my baby shower :) Thanks again to all of you!

Mine did the exact same thing! I finally juststarted putting 2 diapers on her and would change her right when she woke up because even if she didn't wet through the diaper at night she would wake up and pee a gallon first thing in the morning wetting whatever she happened to be sitting on. Try layering the diapers. It's not uncomfortable for them and you'll stay a little saner..

I had the same problem. Yes my baby is 7 1/2 months now, but she has been sleeping through the night since 6 months. We put her down at 7:30-8:00 and she sleeps until 8am. She is about 15 lbs and we put the size 4 Huggie Overnights on her. Yes it comes pretty high on her chest and the tapes overlap, but we have a happy baby in the morning. I also get Huggie coupons in the mail, so I use them to buy the overnights. Hope this helps.

I started using cloth and find using hemp inserts resolves the leak problem. I also never have to deal with diaper rash and it is MUCH cheaper. It isn't nearly the work many people think it is. I use a variety of types of cloth: BumGenius, Happy Heiny, Cheeky Diapers (my favorite), GreenMountain, WAHM, GroBaby... not only am I leak free and diaper rash free but I am saving a ton of $$. With disposables I spent $1500 a year on diapers. I paid $800 for all of the diapers I will need that will last until potty training because they are sizeable as the baby grows.

Have you tried a larger size? I always found that it was time to move up when the diapers started leaking, and the weight guidelines on the diapers always seem to be REALLY optimistic. Just a thought.

Have you thought about cloth diapers? We use a cotton prefold at night with an extra insert (some people use two prefolds instead of the insert) and a wool cover. We've had no problem with leaks and they're really soft. I've bought most of my diapers from Green Mountain Diapers but they're are a lot of vendors out there. Here's the link to GMD--they also have lots of info on their site: http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/

Try the next size. My son does the same thing, so I popped him in the next size for nights, and it does the trick. Just be sure to make it snug so there aren't any potential areas for leakage! :)

I agree with going up a size bigger than the size he is in currently. I use Huggies Supreme's at night. They are a lot thicker and absorbent than the regular ones. This has worked for us. Good luck! Lots of great suggestions on here!

I found that getting the larger size regardless of the brand helped with our leaky night time diapers. I think the night time diapers are just a marketing gimic to get us to buy more diapers.

We use the Pampers Baby Dry and they seem to do the trick. They last 12 hours (says the package--we've never had to leave them on that long, but we've left them on 10 and they worked just fine) and they come in smaller sizes (they start at size 1). Good luck!

Go up a size at night. If he only wakes when there is a leak, go up a size and it shouldn't bother him. I have met many Moms that use one size larger at night. It works. Good luck!

I had this problem with my little boy. I started using size 3 at night and size 2 during the day. It really helped. I used Pampers baby dry diapers.

Use the next size up diaper. It worked for my little one. So a regular size 3 diaper should do the trick. Do you know of any aerobics classes in pv?

The only thing that worked at night when my middle child was in a size 2 was to put him in a size 5 with a maxi pad inside!!!! Good luck!

He may have actually out grown the diaper. I knew when my daughter started leaking it was time to move up a size...it took me a while to figure it out though because they seemed like they were fitting perfectly. I would try the size 3's and see if that helps.

I'm not sure if this is something you would want to try or if it is even an option. I had the same issue with my son and I went to Sam's Club (in OKC) and purchased their brand, I can't remember if the name was Members Mark or Makers Mark. But they were made very high and came up over his belly button. I would put my son to bed by 8 and he would sleep until 7 the next morning. Good Luck!

Some good suggestions. When J would flood his clothes and bed at night we used the next size up overnight diaper. It worked very well. Huggies overnighte diapers are pretty good too.

We have recently switched to Huggies night time pull ups, we use them all day and all night and don't buy diapers anymore. I can tell you these pull ups are wonderful, we traveled to OKC when my mom died and I forgot about changing him. He wore the same pull up the entire afternoon in his carseat and didn't even leak a drop. Poor baby, but I did have a resonable excuse. Anyway, they will be too big for your little one but I suggest you put it on him then fasten his diaper around it to help hold it on. That way the absorbant material will be next to his little body and the diaper will hold it tight.

I would try a bigger sized diaper. And if that doesn't help, I have also had success with the Parent's Choice diaper from wal-mart. A lot of moms I know use them too when they have tried every brand of diaper. They may not look cute but they are a heck of a lot cheaper and work better than others at times!

I would try a size bigger. I know when my daughter was leaking through we went up a size bigger. When she was little I used huggies and the walmart generic brand. Now my daughter is in a size 5 and we use Luvs. The only time she leaks through at night is when she has drank alot right before bedtime. I would try a size bigger. Just buy a small package and go from there. They make plastic covers for at night also. You can buy a package of three in the baby section. Or try putting training pants (they are thick and soft) over the diaper at night and then if it leaks through it wont be as bad. Good luck:)

Hello C.,
I had this same problem with both of my boys....the only fix I found was to use a size larger diaper at night. I guess the little bit of extra diaper at night held more fluid and stopped the leaking!
Good luck!

Gerber makes plastic pants in fun prints ( avaiable at Target) You could put them on over his diaper.
My sister started doing this at night and it is working out well for her son. Saves changing sheets every morning anyway!
Good luck!

They have these diaper inserts at babys r us. They look like a kotex, but they are to use at night to soak up the extra. A friend of mine used them and had great success.
