My daughter is 4mths old and for the past two weeks has had blood in her stool...Scary Right... So as soon as I saw it for the first time I rushed to the ER... My first thought was internal bleeding or Ulcers... I dont know I think it was just a mother instinct to exspect the worst... So ER Dr. says that its just fisures... Little tears in her rectum caused from excessive diharea... wich she had had the belly flu so I thought nothing else of it. They told me it would heel up in a few days and she would be fine... So two weeks later doesnt mean to me a few days so I called her pediatrician told her the details and made an appt. for this morning 10-22-07. She checked her out as much as she could and said she doesnt think its fisures. Luckily my daughter went while we were there in the office so the Dr. could see first hand how much blood and what it looked like. She then has us take the diaper down to the lab to run a test and see if its some sort of an internal infection... She says if it comes back as an infection we can treat it... if it comes back not an infection then she is going to refer me to a Pediatric GI Dr., wich the closest is over an hour away... So my question is "Does anyone have a child who has had any similar problems?" Does anyone have any ideas on what they think it could be?" and "Does anyone know a good way to look up Pediatric GI Dr.'s on the enternet?." Please Help...

New news

The test results came in and it is not an infection. So I finally have an appointment on Nov. 9th. I am going to see a pediatric GI doctor. I took her yesterday to get her shots and her pediatrician mentioned Crohns disease, but it is usually genetic. I have a first cousin who has it but to my daughter that would be a second cousin. I dont know if thats close enough. I asked her if it could be allergies and she doesnt seem to think so. She says she doesnt have enough formula to make her have blood every single diaper, and I would literally have to eat the same thing everytime for it to be from me. I am going to mention all of these things to the GI doctor though. Someone even mentioned that maybe she could be lactos intolerant(spelling?). I appreciate all the thoughts, prayers, and ideas. I am hoping to find something out next week. Wish us luck and keep us in your prayers please.
Thanks,

I did not have this experience, but a friend of mine did - her daughter had bloody stools and was diagnosed with a milk/soy intolerance. She had to go off breast milk and formula and go on a special prescription formula. She will have to stay on it until she is at least 2 since she cannot transition to milk at 1 - have they tested her for a milk/soy intolerance or allergy?

i tried looking up stuff but anal fissure is the biggest reasoning. looking up GI gave some info about doctors. if it was super serious, they wouldn't have let you bring her home so be positive!!!! it'll be ok!!!!!! ((hugs))

A friend of mine had a son in June. She had a similar problem and her doctor found out that it was a food allergy. Her poor son had nothing but blood in one of his diapers from his intestines or bowels (or something) being inflamed and irritated. It turned out that he was allergic to soy and cow's milk... She was nursing so she had to cut out soy and dairy products too. If you have started feeding her something new, it could be an allergy.

Hi C.,

All three of my sister in law's kids have allergic colitis which causes bloody stools. Very scary with the first until they figured out what it was. Turned out thier little systems are allergic to dairy causing the intestines to bleed. She had to cut out dairy while breast feeding and solid feeding. All three grew out of it after about a year.

Good luck! HM

Poor little baby!
I have not personally had this problem, but a very close friend went through the exact same thing with her baby girl as you (diarrhea, blood in stool, etc). Turned out to be a milk and soy allergy- not to be confused with intolerance. The allergy went for so long undiagnosed by the dr (although she took her to the doctor repeatedly), that her stomach was horribly inflamed. Anything she ate went right through her and the stools typically had blood from the constant irritation. The GI specialist did little to help, and both the specialist and the ped said that she would grow out it. Finally, she got an appointment with an allergist, who could give her treatment options. After the visit to the allergist, her symptoms began to subside and she finally started improving.
One thing my friend did that you might want to consider is keeping a journal of how often the diarrhea happens, when the stools are bloody, and maybe even when she has been feeding and how much. If you are nursing, keep a log of what YOU are eating also. It will help tremendously as you go to all these doctors to have a log to present. Doctors are so quick sometimes to write off problems with babies as normal or "she will outgrow it". You know if something is wrong with your baby, so be persistent until someone helps!

C.,

You definately did the right thing, taking her to the doctor. Blood in the stool can mean something as minor as an irritation to a specific kind of formula to serious GI infections. If you ever take her to the doctor and come home still worried, it is fine to take her back again or get a second opinion from another doctor. God gives us these maternal instincts for a reason!I wish you the best of luck with the GI doctor. If she starts acting funny at all, such as not eating well, being more sleepy than normal, or not pooping or peeing as she usually does, call your doctor back again and tell them that you need to be seen that day. Good Luck!

Has your dd been on any antibiotics? Is she breastfed or formula fed?
Here are my thoughts on this...
If she has been on any medication, it could be an allergy and the doctor needs to test for that. This happened to my dd and she ended up hospitalized for a week.
Whether breast or bottle, she may have a milk allergy. If you formula feed, you may need to switch to a soy formula. If she is breastfed, you may need to remove dairy from your diet, and might need to include wheat as well.
I hope the doctor can find out what is wrong quickly. Don't let them put you off. YOU know your daughter best. If you aren't getting the information and attention you think you need, find another doctor. Sending well wishes your way...
