These are great ideas and you will overpack at first. One thing that I found essential was a small water bottle for me. Inevitably I would be out and about and forget to have anything to drink.

I always had plastic bags (they have them specifically made for diaper items in most stores) for soiled clothes, bibs, etc. Try to always have a receiving blankets that is used just for when you change the baby. The little plastic thing that comes with the diaper bag is not big enough. When you have to go to a public restroom it really comes in handy.

When you first venture out with your new little one, you tend to overpack. Over time, you'll actually decrease the # of items you need...just to go to the store as things become more predictable, and you just plain get tired of lugging the baby, infant seat, heavy diaper bag, etc. That being said, you may want to include a shirt change for yourself, a bib, burp cloth, formula (readymade or powder plus a bottle of water) and a toy.

Here's some items I carry,
toys, plastic bags for dirty diapers(if they're smelly and you're somewhere nice), chapstick, any medicine or ointment you may need, a small blanket to change the baby on, bibs, and anything YOU might need!

From the first 7 responses, it looks to me like you have a great list of things. All I would add is a spare shirt for you (esp the first 6 mos of spitting up potential), a few snacks for yourself (Zone bars, crackers, etc) since you'll be surprised how time flies and you've taken care of baby's needs, but not your own and as baby gets a little older (6 mos+) small board books and such.

Everything you own plus the kitchen sink heeheehee Just kidding
The other women covered what I would put in. After the first two kids I moved on to a backpack instead of a diaper bag.
That became my purse plus diaper bag.
Just a thought, a small diaper bag always packed and left in the car or if you have two cars one in each, it just has to have a diaper and wipes.
I remember leaving the house with just the babies and keys at times. Things will slip your mind after you have children as long as you remember the child you are doing great.
Enjoy your baby and Have a great day

I always keep a shirt in the diaper bag for me. It never fails the second we leave the house my son spits up on me. Also put some diaper rash cream. Never know when you will need it. I also have clorox Anywhere hard surface spray, Right now at target when you buy the 22 oz you get a travel one free. I love the stuff since Michael puts everything in his mouth. Even the table.

Hi S.,
Congrats on being a new Mom! How exciting. :)

In our diaper bag, we keep the following in addition to above:
-pacifier (if needed)
-water in a sippy cup or in your case maybe a bottle and some powdered formula or breast milk (some bags have areas that you can put refrigerated items and it keeps them cool
-a few toys for entertaining during diaper changes or at the table
-tylenol infant drops, thermometer (you never know, I guess)
-bib or spit-up cloth

From my own personal experience- an extra set of keys!
I was so focused on what all I needed to get for the baby that I would often lock myself out of home or car!

If you are planning on breast feeding, throw in extra nursing pads, in case they get soaked. I also like to keep hand sanitizer in the bag as well. You'll definately want to consider a diaper bag/purse combo. Carrying a purse in addition to a diaper bag is just one extra thing to keep track of. Congrats and enjoy the ride! Your life and your heart will never be the same.

Hello S.! congrats on your new baby and being a new mom. It is so great. You will love it. It is the most rewarding thing in the world.

Anyhow, I always kept a bag too in there for soiled diapers and clothes. And also burp rags, bibs, and extras too. A pacifier if your baby takes one. Diaper rash ointment. A toy or teething ring, or rattle. I hope this helps.

Have a bottle of nursery water and formula in car if not breastfeeding or supplementing.

Carry the diaper rash cream, baby lotion, purell and a big enough changing pad.

And your change of clothes as well as you are new mom..and babies do spit up.
