Diaper Advice - Cos Cob,CT

I'd like to hear your thoughts on good overnight diapers. It seems that every morning my son wakes up with wet clothes and bedding. Sometimes he is so soaked he wakes up in the middle of the night and I'm changing clothes/sheets/diapers at 3 am (ugh!) We currently use Pampers (I think flex-dry or baby-dry). I went up a size thinking that would help but he's still wet. I've tried Huggies which were awful. I am going to double up tonight but I think that sounds uncomfortable and would rather just find a good strong diaper.

Hello. I was experiencing the same thing with my daughter. Everything was soaked and she was cold because of the wet pee pee. Anyway, we tried every darn diaper out there. We came upon the Fisher Price diapers and they work miracles. They have ones for night and for day. we only use the night ones and the huggies in the day. No leaks in almost 3 months!!They are great.

I always use Pampers. Once in a while my son wakes up we but thats if he's had too much milk before bedtime. After 2.5 years of diapering, I only use Pampers, ive tried other brands but always go back to them!

Hi J.. I have a very wet baby boy as well, but I moved from regular diapers to Pampers Baby Dry Overnight Extra Protection diapers and they have worked well. We've tried Huggies Overnights in the past - and they are ok too, but I'm just not the biggest fan (I think Pampers are softer, more comfortable).

Something I've noticed that really helps is the obvious rule of cutting back on fluid intake. I'm still with bottles for my 10.5 month old, so I've made his dinner and bedtime bottle less and that has totally helped (and he really doesn't seem to miss those extra couple of ounces). So - I would suggest that you pair down the liquid intake as best you can.

Pampers Cruisers just came out with something called "Cruisers Premium Absorbency" (which allegedly absorbs 10% more than regular cruisers) - something you might want to give a try.

Lastly, if there doesn't seem to be an improvement, I would try (as weird as this sounds) putting a maxipad in the front of his diaper. Should at least keep you from having to change the sheets - and might even make for a quick middle of night changing session bc you don't have to take the diaper off, you just have to pull the pad out.

Hope this helps! Good luck!!

You really need to get "boy" diapers, since boys need the absorbant padding in a different spot. It's hard to remember which brand we had to use for our son, since he's a lot older now. I know it was an expensive brand. I think it might have been Luvs.

huggies has an overnight diaper. I've used them fairly successfully for both of my boys.
I think pampers just also had an overnight diaper come out on the market.
you can also look for diaper doublers, I've seen them at babysrus or toysrus.
you can also use really big maxipads in the diapers but i didn't have much luck with those, i don't think it kept him dry like diapers.
I also just limited his drinking in the middle of the night which helped tremendously. I changes from bottle to sippy and he doesn't drink as much, if any.
good luck

As strange as it sounds, Luvs saved me from overnight wettage. I had the same problem with huggies and pampers, and I tried Luvs and they worked. I had maybe 2-3 leaks with Luvs since I started using them till the day my daughter was out of diapers. They will save you money as well! Give them a try and see if they work for you.

I was having this same issue with my son. I also use pampers during the day. Now, at night I use the Huggies (which i don't like for daytime either) Nighttime diapers. Since using them, he has only leaked one time. Which is wonderful, because like you, I used to either wake him in the middle of the night to change him, or change his sheets and clothes every morning. I highly recommend them. Good luck.

Hi J.,

My son is 29 months old. We had the same problem. For the past 2 months now I've been using pampers pull ups.
We have not had a problem since. Make sure its the correct size. They need to be a snugg fit. I tried a size bigger thinking it would hold more. Wrong! They ended up rolling down on him. He Peed through his clothing and crib sheet. During the day he uses pampers cruiser. I like them better than regular pampers. I feel he can move much better in them. Huggies NEVER worked for me either!!! Hope this helps...

Huggies Overnight diapers in a larger size than he normally wears and the diaper doubler which is a pad (looks like a maxi pad) that you put in the diaper for extra absorbency. You can find the diaper doubler at Babies R Us.

I had a similar problem with my munchkin. I switched to "Pampers Cruisers Ultra Absorbency" and for a while I used overnight diapers for him when I put him to bed. Overnights were surprisingly hard to find, so I just got whatever brand I could find in his size. As, they say though, this too shall pass, and you shouldn't need overnights for too long!

My 5th child turns 3 today! (my oldest is 23!!!) so I've been through this scenerio, and have found what seems the only solution. Within the two hours prior to bedtime, only give small thirst-quenching sips of liquids ONLY. If you give full glasses of drinks within this time period, you are pretty much setting the stage for how wet the night will be! Even diapers that say "overnight" are full of it, if your kiddo has a huge bottle or drink of anything right at bedtime, you can count on them filling diaper OR overflowing it, there's just no other way around it. Two of my kids used cloth diapers, the other three used regular disposables. I have tried every product out there, including diaper liners. The only difference I find in having a dry-er night is limiting the liquid intake within two hours of bedtime. I mean, you don't want to dehydrate them, but when they are thirsty just give a few sips as opposed to letting them chug liquids, it makes ALL the difference! :) Good luck!

hi there! i have 2 kids, a boy and a girl and we've probably only had a handful of leaks in our house. we've been using BJS brand (Berkley Jensen) diapers for both of them. people don't beleive me when i tell them they're better than pampers, huggies and all the rest (we've used so many)... and they are even cheaper than the other brands (i know, i sound like a commercial ;p). the amazing thing is that neither of my kids ever got/get diaper rash (they always did with pampers brand). so besides the obvious of pointing your son's privates 'down' and having him in the right sized diapers, this would be my advice! good luck to you!

I used to buy diaper doublers, which are like maxi pad that you put into diapers to make them more absorbent. I used them with Huggies overnight. Unfortunately, they are no longer available. We switched from Huggies overnight to Pampers Ultra Aborbent and they work much better for us. If you can't find a diaper that holds enough to get you through the night try sticking one of your maxi pads in there, I've done that in a pinch and it works great.

Good luck,

Pampers Cruises Ultra Absorbency one size up. They only sell them at BJs. They also sell Pampers Cruisers Extra Absorbency only at Target - not sure how they compare & only go up to size 5 I think. I tried Huggies overnights, Fisher Price night diapers, Pampers Baby-Dry Extra Protection, & they did not work for my son - all leaked. The best in my opinion are the Pampers Cruisers Ultra Absorbency, which work most of the time. Probably cutting back on evening & nighttime drinking would also help if that is the case.

Good Luck!

I just started using Pampers Extra Protection. It is a blue and purple box with a sleeping baby on it. They work great. We were having the same problem and with these you won't have to change during the night. They are also great for trips and shopping. If you are like me I HATE using public changing tables. They are really gross. So I don't have to worry about changing her while we are out. Unless she does #2 then we have to use the changing tables. LOL. I found them in Walmart, Kmart and target. Really works. I am very happy with them.

Try the Huggie Overnights. I agree that the regular Huggies are awful. They never seemed to fit my kids right or something but for some reason the Overnites have worked well. We use Pampers Cruisers and have rarely had a problem. You may also want to consider cutting-back on fluids before bed time. Your son will probably start potty training in the next 6 months or so and it would be a good habit to get into! I also change my son just before putting him down.

Get Goodnites --they come in a dark blue package -they are made for older kids who are bed wetters --we used them for a long time for my little guy --he is now going to be five in December --and we have stopped using anything at night and he had been good with waking up dry for a while but we have had two VERY wet nights in the last week -he woke up at 3 a.m. sopping wet this morning and required a shower --second time this week I was showering him in the middle of the night. I am cranky and exhausted. I have to cut off liquid earlier at night --everyone tells me that but I give in to him to have his "nighttime milk" he has a milk and then brushes his teeth and goes to bed -but I have to set a cut off time.
Try the Goodnites though --the size we were using is good for 38 lbs -65 lbs --my son is just over 40 lbs. Your son is younger so you'd need a smaller size.
good luck!

Once my now almost five year old and my 13 months were out of the pampers swaddlers, I used Costco brand (Kirkland???). I have tried all the other brands and found them to be better than all the name brand diapers. I actually order them online if I can't get to Costco. In a pinch I have had to buy small quantities of pampers or huggies and usually end up giving them away when my costco ones come. I also find that their wipes are the thickest and best too!

Every baby's bottom needs are different, so don't rule out trying a different brand altogether. I think they make diaper liners that help hold more at night, or you could try to overnight diapers. My kids could never wear anything but Huggies (everything else leaked, day or night). A bigger diaper won't necessarily help, especially if it is loose around the legs. You could also get some vinyl diaper covers for nighttime to keep things contained. Given his age, you could also consider something like goodnights or another nighttime pull-up type bottom to see if that holds better. Good luck!

I still find that once in a blue moon her diaper will leak through at night with any diaper I use, but very rarely. I find the luvs or the Pampers Extra Protection are the best. Good Luck :)

Hi Jen
My daughter is the exact age of your son and I am going through the same thing too.
I have tried Pampers Baby dry and cruisers, I switched to Luvs also and that helped for a very short amount of time. I originally used Huggies but I think they are too rough and they do no better a job than Pampers as far as absorbency. I used the Huggies overnight's and they were terrible. So I am in the same boat as you are.
My daughter is big for her age and she is 36 lbs and 36 inches long, so we are already using size 6 diapers!
I may be even more limited than you as to what I can use b/c Pampers is the only brand I know of that makes
a size 7. She may be big in size but she is still just 21 months old and no where ready to be potty trained.
So I may run out of sizes before anything else!!

Good luck
I hope some Mom's have some solutions as I will be reading your responses too.
I sure hope there is a resolution for this problem!

Thanks for posting it!

So funny, the same is happening to me with my 18 month old son, Alex. I just bought a package of pampers overnights (that might not be the exact name but they say on the front that they're great for travel). It's working- he's still waking up with his clothes a little wet but he's not completely soaking through everything anymore. He wears a size 4 in the baby dry and I also bought these in the 4.

Hi J.,
My kids are way past the diaper stage, but I'd suggest first checking his diaper before YOU go to bed. If he's been in bed just a couple of hours and has already peed, when he wets the 2nd time, the diaper just can't hold it. A diapering before you go to bed may help in this case. I don't think doubling the disposable diaper will help - the pee is leaking out the top or the legs, may not be caught and absorbed by the 2nd diaper, it isn't soaking through the waterproof outer liner. You might also try some variation of cloth for night time.
Goodluck

I started so early cuz the diapers were so expensive to me.
