Hi G.,

Probiotics will treat the problem. I used it sucessfully with my children. A product called Life Start by Natren designed for infants and toddlers http://natren.com/life_start.asp

Another remedy to try in addition to the probiotics is carob powder in warm water.

Blessings,
O.

Anything past 3 days, see a doctor about. I'm a mom of 4 from age 11-age 2. Fever or not, seek medical attention if after the 3rd day it persists.good luck!!

Take your child to the Doctor. Don't "guess" about how to cure her/him, or how come he/she is having diarrhea.

He/she could have a virus, roto virus, or another ailment. You did not say how long it's been going on, or how frequently he/she has diarrhea, or if there are any accompanying symptoms...

You also don't want dehydration to happen.
Take your child to the doctor.
Good luck,

Does she have a fever? Has she eaten something different? Is it watery and explosive or just softer than normal? How many times a day is she pooping? How long has this been going on? Any vomiting? It's OK to try to keep her hydrated with the Pedialyte and the BRAT diet is great but only for a day or so. If she's pooping a lot dehydration could be a major problem, so make sure she's drinking plenty, even if it's only a tablespoon or so every 15 minutes. But please call the doctor if it's been a couple days and get his/her advice.

The diet is the most important. Make sure that your child's regular diet includes plenty of fiber. Fiber doesn't just help you have a bowel movement, it helps you stop having bowel movements too. Fiber helps your body to find the right balance between loose stool and hard stool. You can find fiber in a variety of vegetables and fruits (like prunes) as well as in whole grains (that is why they tell you to eat apples, rice and toast). Bananas do help things to stop up alittle, but if you eat too many (without a balanced diet), you will end up with the opposite problem. Your baby could also have the flu or a temporary illness, if that is the case you just need to make sure to replenish her fluids (that is why they advise pedialyte and other clear fluids) and wait it out. If this is due to a diet imbalance, it could take several days for it to work out (based on my experience, 2-3 days is enough for a baby's body to get back to normal).
Make sure she drinks plenty of fluids to keep her from getting dehydrated and carry around lots of diapers and an extra outfit or two. Good luck.
P.S. I am including a link that should help. Enjoy.

Shouldn't last more than 3 to 4 days. If you are doing the BRAT diet then that should fix it. Maybe your baby is sensitive to a food she or he is eating. Or milk?

My doctor says the brat diet doesn't really help. He told me to do the Pediasure thing. You need to keep the baby hydrated.

Assuming there are no other symptoms (fever, aches, etc), consider his diet. My daughter (although 2 at the time) had diarrhea for about two weeks. I was convinced she had parasites or something from eating dirt, sand, or anything else toddler's get into. The MD suggested it was "toddler's diarrhea" that is caused by sensitivity to sugar, specifically the kind in apple juice. Look it up online. Once I stopped the juice and loaded her up on fiber (veggies, etc), it stopped.

In my experience, anything over a week is too long. You're risking dehydration and of course chancing diaper rash if it gets bad. I would consult your child's ped asap. With my son I had to go to rice cereal in small amounts and Pedialyte is what I stick with.

I'm sure you have already called your doctor but I think it shouldn't last for more than a week. Obviously you have tried the Pedialyte and BRAT diet. I know how frustrating it is when they can't keep anything down and you just want it to stop and nothing seems to work. Because they don't like the taste of Pedialyte I have done the following: 1/2 CLEAR pedialyte (I used the Target Brand this time) and 1/2 Fruit Punch (Not the Tropical Punch) flavored Gatorade. This is the only way my kids will drink it. I have tried other flavors of Pedialye and Gatorade and they just won't drink it. Good Luck! Y.

My doctor told me that diarrhea is when stools are extremely watery and more frequent than 2-3 times a day. It could be that your baby has very soft stools or may have a food allergy. I am going through something similar. My son is 17 months and this is what we've discovered through trial and error and through research. Try eliminating dairy from his diet. We've eliminated dairy and noticed that his stools are a little more solid. We give him Soy milk. I was also thinking about switching him to rice mild to see if that is any better. I've also read that some parents have given their kids probiotics to help increase the flora (good bacteria) in the stomach. With diarrhea, both good bacteria and 'bad' bacteria is expelled. We also give our son apples (boiled to soften and helps release the pectin). The pectin in the apples helps to harden the stools- do not add any sugar b/c the sugars will feed the bacteria so as to increase diarrhea; it'll be a vicious cycle. Lastly, I've read that white grape juice may help solidify stools (haven't tried it yet). It doesn't contain the sorbitol that causes diarrhea.
