Decorating Daughter's Desk for May Day

I was wondering if any of you creative minds out there could give me some ideas. My daughter is in the first grade, and her school has a tradition for the first-grade parents to come up to the school and decorate their child's desk as a suprise for May Day. Her teacher gave us some good ideas, but I was wondering if you guys had any more. Here is what the teacher suggested: "Ideas for items you might want to bring include: streamers, a fancy new pencil, a small May Day basket filled with popcorn and M&Ms, a funky placemat, a small potted plant, a balloon, fresh flowers, a special note--whatever you like!"
Thank you!

Could you wrap the entire desk top in wrapping paper--maybe something flowery and spring-like, and then have all sorts of fancy decorations underneath and inside? That way it is like a big present for her to unwrap!

Get a pot and put stones in it then stick pencils into the stones that are decorated like flowers. You can decorate the pot too.

What a cute idea! You could decorate your daughter's desk like a Maypole--alternating colored streamers fanned out and taped to the floor (if there's room...not sure of the desk set-up). Have fun!

Hi E.,

How about making flowers out of hair ribbons and pipe cleaners. You could make a bouquet out of some of them with barretts in there, too. Maybe add a little candy if the other children will be getting some. Have Fun!!!

For the place mat, you could attach a picture of your family. That way, if she can keep it, she will have a picture of a happy day, every day.

do you have any photos of her? Maybe cut in a circle as the center of a flower with paper petals bordering the picture. I loved pictures when I was a little girl--especially of ME!

When I was a girl we always did May Flowers, April Showers bring May flowers. My mother and I would put flowers in pots/baskets and take them to nearby neighbors we knew well.

Anyway with that in mind you could make the flower heads & leaves out of construction paper (various colors) and attach them to pipe cleaners (stems). Depending on the desk type you could wrap the "stems" of the flowers around the desk legs and the chair, while maybe adding blue streams for rain or green for a green field. If she likes bunnies, butterflies, flowers or some other springy item maybe make some cut outs that you can tape to her desk or the streams... it will be like one big art piece! Butterflies flying in the blue sky, Bunnies hopping in the green fields, flowers growing all over her desk!

You can also get a small plastic pot, decorate it with your daughter's favorite color, shapes, animals whatever put some of that fake potting foam stuff and put your homemade flowers in it to set onto of her desk. If you want to be really sneaky have your daughter decorate the pot herself (paint & stickers), saying it is a gift for someone or you want to plant something in it later. You can add a note saying Happy May Day to my wonderful girl, hope you like the pot! Love Mom. This way she will be really surprised and exited to see something she made on her desk. It could be your inside joke between the two of you or something fun for her to share with friends... I made this and had no idea my mom was going to put it on my desk.

Those are the ideas I have. Have fun with it!

How about something fun like a mini-tea party for one? You could find/make a small special table cloth, a tea cup and small plate, a special napkin, an a petit treat from your bakery. It would be something special and different and oh..so...cute!
