Decorating a Bathroom for a Boy & Girl

We are buying a new house that has a Jack & Jill bathroom for the kids. The boy is turning 5 and the girl is 2 1/2. I would love some decorating ideas that can "grow" with them. I thought of maybe a surfboard/beach theme, but would love to hear other ideas. I would love something where we could get boyish stuff for his sink area (near his room) and girlish stuff for her sink area (near her room) and then connect the theme through the shared area (shower, toilet).

Thanks for any ideas!

I love the ideas
North woods
Ocean theme
bugs and bitterflies
Farm theme
Fish
Mickey Mouse/Minnie Mouse
Winnie the Pooh
cats or dogs, it's raining cats and dogs
Paint it pink one one half and blue on the other and gradually mix the two together

We did insects. Grasshoppers, caterpillars, etc. for the boys. Butterflies and dragonflies for the girls. I really like the surfer idea though.

You could go with an overall "ocean" theme and do one half more mermaids and the other half more surfboard theme with general ocean, fish stuff all around!

I like Amanda's idea about over all beach theme, but I wanted to add that you could do mermaids on one side and pirates on the other.

I did curious George for my girls when we moved. Adorable shower curtain and decals from pottery barn kids!

You will be surprised how quickly the years pass. If I were you I would keep away from a theme and go with fun colored stripes for the shower curtain and maybe he could have a more masculine throw rug at his sink and she could have a more feminine throw rug. I would definitely keep the walls completely neutral (meaning do not put up a border, mural or decorative painting) If you really want the beach theme, do it with the shower curtain, trash can, towels and sink accessories. Those things you will need to be changed anyway in a few years but you might not want to paint for another 10 years or so. Have fun and good luck with your new house. It is a lot of fun to decorate when you have a clean slate.

We got a monkey themed bathroom set for our kids. The shower curtain has the "see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil" mokeys with a jungle background. the trashcan, tissue holder and toothbrush holder are all that same theme and then there is a rug shaped like a monkey head. so cute. its from bed bath and beyond

How about a Jayhawk theme? Red and blue are great colors. Gotta start 'em early...

(Sorry, I saw your name and couldn't resist!!! Please take this in the spirit of humor that it is being offered!)

BTW, love the surfboard/beach idea. Have fun decorating and congrats on your new home!

The bathroom that my children use is a ducky theme. I stenciled a blue line (border) around the room and stenciled bright yellow ducks above the blue line. Ducky shower curtain, ducky faucet protector for the bathtub. For the walls, I did a faux finish. The "undercoat" is white and I chose a light blue color for the faux finish, using a sponging technique. The walls look like soft blue clouds . I feel so happy and peaceful in that bathroom.

My kids bathroom is ALWAYS wet! So I usually do something water related. RIght now it is all fishies. Blue towels. Clear shower curtain with fish half way up, so, it's plenty bright when they are in the tub and I can see them, but they are still somewhat covered sitting in the tub. Fish stick on decals on the tub and the mirror. Heck, they make fish everything for bathrooms. I didnt want to paint fish on the wall, so I got stick on things from target that look like fish swimming by. Thier bathroom looks like an aquarium. They really like it.

I really like your surfboard/beach idea! I think it would be really cute for a boy and girl and tie in nicely. I also think if you really hunt for the right stuff it's not too kitchy and will last for many years.
Good Luck
