Debit Card for Ca Pregnancy Disability

I'm about to go out on pregnancy disability and read that EDD now gives you a debit card instead of mailing a check. Has anyone had any experience with this? How do I pay bills? Can you get the money out of the card so I can put it in my checking account?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for their input. I really appreciate it! I received my debit card today and was able to go online and transfer all the payments to my checking account. My fingers are crossed that I did it correctly. Now I just need to wait for my AFLAC checks to arrive. Thanks again!

You can set it up to transfer money into you regular bank account. That is what I did. There are no additional fees charged. I have wells Fargo for my bank.

I don't know about this plan. However, I do have something to share.

The State of CT Unemployment Dept. stopped issuing checks. You have the choice to have the funds direct deposited or put onto a debit card. If you're given this option do NOT get the debit card. It's filled with all kinds of fees. In our case you can use the debit card at ATM's to withdraw cash.

It works like most any other debit card. You manage your account on a special website set up by EDD with Bank of America. You can transfer money to your checking account automatically.

It's a debit card issued through Bank of America. EDD puts the money directly into your B of A account and you can transfer the funds to your own personal account (that's what I do), or you can withdraw cash from an ATM, or you can use the debit card to make purchases. It's pretty easy to use, I like it better than when they used to mail checks.

I got one, and I haven't tried it yet, but you're supposed to be able to transfer the $$ to your account. seems like a pain in the butt to me. Is it that much harder to issue a check than a debit card? You have to create a PIN with the card. I'm not a fan...

I can't read your other answers for some reason, so I apologize if this is repetative.
In NV, child support and unemployment are also put on debit cards (through Chase bank). They can be used like a Visa card or a debit card with PIN. My understanding is that you can use WFB to pull cash off the unemployment card, but only 4 times w/o being charged a fee. The child support card charges a fee every time you use it at an ATM, so you should verify whether you can use an ATM w/o fees. The best way to get cash off the card is to make a purchase using debit and get cash back. There is no fee to do this.
Good luck!

Hey there! I'm actually on pregnancy disability right now, had my son a month ago. I just received my card a week ago. Yes, you can pay bills just as with any credit card and you can also get money out of the card at any Bank of America A.T.M, or any A.T.M for that matter! The card itself is issued by B of A. It's pretty convenient if you ask me! Better than waiting for an actual check! Congrats on your soon to be new baby! :)

I loved it, cause I could transfer the money out and it was always there on time. I never had to wait for a weekend or holiday or whatever. Plus, there was some mail stealing in our area which was super stressful for me... It was a pain to set it up, but super easy to use, and hopefully cheaper for the state! =)
Good luck and Congradulations!

We have the debit card for child support in the state of hawaii. You can use an ATM machine for the card, but there are fees attached to it. It was frustrating at first, but you get the hang of it. db
