Hi all! Any advice on how to best get my son adjusted to the new daylight saving time? He woke up at 5:00AM this morning instead of his usual 6:00AM, even though he went to bed at his normal time. Yikes!

What can I do next?

My kids usually adjust on their own but you could try pushing bedtime out 15 or 30 minutes for a few days and then slowly put him to bed at normal time. Good luck! I wish they would just leave the time alone!!!

I think it just takes a week or so to kink out. I wish we didn't have daylight savings. My daughter is really goofed up, she couldn't fall asleep to save herself last night and then cried this morning "I don't wanna go to school, I'm tired" So I'm assuming she'll pass out at 6pm tonight and be even more off schedule.

I also know of 4 adults including myself that were WIDE awake at 2am last night. After discussing this we were all like "Gosh if I'd known you were awake I'd have called you"

I am not a big fan of daylight savings I think after a few days -week things should calm back down and be normal again.

It takes about 3 weeks to adjust to a time change. Some kids are more sensitive to it than others (mine are). Any changes you make should be made in 15 minute increments and if he is getting up at his "old" time (5:00 on the clock, 6:00 to his body) he should be going to bed closer to his "old" time. If his bedtime is 8:00 try putting him down at 7:15 for a few days, then 7:30, then 7:45 until you get to 8:00. Mary Kurcinka Sheedy of Eagan has written an excellent book about kids and sleep, "Sleepless in America," if you want some expert advice. She also has a website and offers classes on a variety of parenting topics. If it's any consolation I'm having trouble getting my dogs to adjust to the new time! They are wide awake and ready to eat breakfast at 6:00 a.m. Good luck with your son!

I am having the same problem with my 7 month old. I put her to bed at the usual time and she is waking up an hour earlier. I'm sure it will just take some time for them to figure out the new time. She is also waking up at 5am instead of 6am. My son, he's 3 years old is having no problems with it. I think maybe just try to keep his schedule the same throughout the day with the new times and he will get used to it and go back to the same schedule. At least that's what I'm planning to do with my daughter. Good luck! I hate daylight savings for this reason.

I am having the same problem with my 7 month old daughter. I tried to keep her up 30 min later last night, but she was still up at 4:45 am. She normally sleeps until 6-6:30. This morning I just let her play in her crib for a while before I went and got her.

My twins are doing the SAME THING, did it last year two (when they were about the age of your son) I think you just mostly have to be patient. I noticed today they woke up about 30 minutes later and I remember they did that last year, it took about a week for them to adjust the hour and within 7 days they were back on track. Sorry, probably just going to need a few days patience for this....Maybe hanging a dark towel over his window to avoid any of the dawn light to filter in mkaing him think its later than it really is.

I don't know if I was just lucky or if what I did actually worked. Instead of having my 5 month old's bedtime adjust a full hour overnight, I pushed her bedtime out 15 minutes at a time for four days before daylight savings. She slept for the same amount of time each night and now she is back to her normal bedtime and wakes up at the same time she used to. Maybe you could try something like that if your son doesn't adjust soon?
