Hello moms,
Does anyone know of an affordable (not joking) daycare center in Manhattan. I live around the East Village area and work around grand central. I'm trying to see if I can put my two year old daughter in one.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow, THANK YOU so much for the very useful information! I will make sure to check all of them. Oh and when I said "affordable",I meant less than $400 a week and with meals. Right now, I have a family member taking care of my little one and I feel that she is not getting enough interaction with other kids. Many of my friends who have kids in a daycare are more advanced than my little one b/c of the interaction they have with other kids. I want that for her, even if it is a part time situation. Anyway, I'm getting off topic here. Again, THANK YOU all for the info.

This should be a good starting point for you to find a daycare, but you'll probably have to contact them individually about rates: https://a816-healthpsi.nyc.gov/ChildCare/ChildCareList.do

Here is the website for the Day Care Council in NY: http://www.dccnyinc.org/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={B.... They should also have good resources and probably referrals for you. I'm not in your area, but I work for a CCRR and we are able to give parents a lot of information and referrals. Good luck!

Daycare is very expensive in most parts of Manhattan, but in-home family day cares are more affordable. This is especially true as your kids get older, beyond age 1 and age 2, because the regulations about the caregivers-kids ratio is better. We are going through this process now in West Harlem, because we want to move our toddler into one, and then leave our second kid, on the way, with the nanny. I just found this site with a database of all the licensed in-home day care providers in NY, and I was able to search in just our zip code:

http://it.ocfs.ny.gov/ccfs_facilitysearch/

It's a bit of an overwhelming list, and my hunch is that some might not still be running. So it probably takes a lot of calling to figure out how to do the weeding out process. But I did talk to a couple of places a few months ago, recommended by other parents, and I was impressed at the background of the people running them and the fact that they provided 2 or even 3 meals a day, which must make things easier.

I don't know exactly what you mean by affordable but there is a very good preschool on 5th Ave called Preschool of America.
You might also check with the below and see if you can find anything:

*New York State Office of Children and Family Services/Bureau of Daycare – for a list of licensed family, group and school-aged childcare visit http://it.ocfs.ny.gov/CCFS_facilitysearch. Any violations and the status of those violations are also available here.
*National Association for the Education of Young Children – for a list of NAEYC-Accredited Programs visit http://www.naeyc.org/academy/search/

*NYC Health and Human Services – For information regarding city agencies visit http://nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/menuitem.dc5c7f33039e8b.... For tips on choosing a licensed facility see http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/dc/dctips.shtml

*Day Care Council of New York – A free referral service for daycares in your area visit http://www.dccnyinc.org/index.asp?Type=DYNAFORM&SEC={... You can call them at ###-###-####.

*Parents Connect website – for a listing of parent-reviewed facilities visit http://gocitykids.parentsconnect.com/category/new-york-ny.... However, at the time of this document, no facilities were listed for either Greenpoint or Williamsburg.

*Professional Nannies - Manhattan nanny agency.

ALSO - I would check to see if your company offers Flex Spending and UTILIZE it! Its a major way to save $$!
Good luck!

Since you have only one child, I would try a nanny share. My cousin did this - she lives uptown and had great success with it. Daycare is very pricey. Good luck!
