My son is eight years old and has an autism disorder. He needs very regimened care in a loving home that understands his disability. Would prefer home daycare but a center is not completely out of the question. I have been looking high & low with no avail!!!

I know the perfect person is out there!

PLEASE HELP!

What can I do next?

What side of town are you needing? I have a son with Asperger's who is six years old and does okay in home daycare as long as I educate the sitter on Asperger's. My son is pretty high functioning too but can be rather persistent and active at times... as you so eloquently pointed out, social interaction is a life long process for our little guys :)

Also, have you looked into the autistic group on meetup.com that is coordinated by Sharon Smith? I believe the web page is http://autism.meetup.com/3/

God Bless you and yours :)

I don't know much about this day care, but it sounds like they care for special needs children. Their web site is http://www.especiallykidsinc.com It is in Northern Greenwood. I hope you are able to find what you are looking for.

I am not a parent of a Special Needs child, but my babysitter is. Her son is Autistic with Asperger's Syndrome. I have a friend who has a niece just born with Downs.

My babysitter recommended IPIN (Indiana Parenting Information Network) as a source for all things for special needs children. Even just a person to cry to when stress takes over. You may try this as a source for childcare in your area for your sweet son.

They have a website too! www.ipin.org

T. - My sister's family (including her 8 year old autistic son - then 4-5) used to live in Indianapolis. She was the Director of a daycare (Little Friends on Rucker.... current Director is Alicia Harris who my sister worked with also and she mentions below). I emailed her for you to see if she had recommendations. Here's what she said:

Well, not really, unfortunately I never had the kids at anywhere but Little
Friends when I was there :) In CT, I could have been that woman and finally
found Sonya, who has a brother who has significant disabilities so she "got it."

Actually, IAEYC (Indiana Assoc. for the Educ. of Young Children) might have
a database and I think the state of Indiana might have a listing of
providers. I would certainly find someone who has Special Ed. experience or
a relative with a disability. The other thought is there are plenty of
Universities, Colleges and especially Ivy Tech that have Early Childhood
degree programs that might have students who would want experience.

Good luck to her, as her child gets older it's tougher to find that because
that social gap is more noticeable to the children......

PS Alicia at Little Friends might have some ideas for her??
