Daughter's First Period - Milford,OH

This may sound crazy, but what is the longest first period any of you have heard of? My daughter has been on her first for over 4 weeks. I have asked the dr. 2x if this is normal. He said yes, it can last this long. He advised me to give her an iron supplement so she doesn't become anemic, but that is all. He said it is because the first period is estrogen based.
Any input?

What can I do next?

My daughter's lasted really long too. She thankfully has become regular in the years and is fine
Love her during this time and be patient. She is probably really annoyed about now and wishing the whole thing would end.

I got my first when I was 13 and I cant remember if it was my first period but definitely within the first 6 months of getting it and I had a period that lasted almost 2 months straight. After about 5-6 weeks my Mom finally said this is so not normal and took me to the doctor who put me on the pill to regulate my periods and they were like clockwork after that. (and I never took being on the pill as a free pass to have sex.)

Yes. I rememeber my first period lasted, I think, it was 5 weeks long of light bleeding. I told my mom and she freaked out and took me to the DR who told her that it was normal. My second period was much shorter (about a week) and it evened out from there.

My daughter's did not last that long, but it did last longer than the norm. Keep track of her periods. This way if you find she continues to have extremely long periods you can mention it to the doctor.

I think mine lasted about a week. I feel bad for her. I agree with NY Metro, take her out for girl time like lunch, shopping and mani/pedi and end with a movie or make it her day. I would have been mad if mine lasted that long especially the first time. I had the worst cramps ever.
I have a friend whose lasted 17 weeks. She was 35ish though and ended up getting a hysterectomy. She had some cysts and other problems.

Poor kiddo! As long as shes not in pain and not anemic, she should be ok. My first one was 3 weeks, but I got to be textbook normal after that. Give her plenty of love and encourage her that she wont bleed like this forever. Good luck :)

Yiikes! I've never heard of that - but I'm not a doctor. I do tend to tgrust my MD - how about calling your OB/GYN? See what they have to say - maybe it will give you peace of m ind. My DD's first was about a week - and has always been - heavy and lots of severe cramps like mine was until I went on the pill and then later had kids.

Give her lots of hugs and affection and more than anything assure her that this is not how it will always be. Yikes I'd have jumped off a roof if that was my first experience!!! Poor thing. I'd say this all calls for a girls day out - pampering, maybe a mani-pedi or a little shopping.
