My 7 year old daughter has been complaining about her top front tooth being so loose. She said it hurt when she ate and really bothered her. Last night she continually begged me to pull it out. Having taken out the other top tooth and two bottom teeth with no problem, I finally Well it came out very easily and quickly. Then i looked closely at the tooth and realized it was not a whole tooth! The bottom of the tooth is still embeded in the gum! I feel sssssssssssooooooooooooooo horrible! It is not causing her pain thank God! But I am not sure what to do. I called her dentist immediately when it happened but they cannot see her until Monday. I am trying to find another dentist to see her, but having a hard time finding one who will take her insurance that can see her right away. It is far up in the gum and I am worried they will have to cut her gum open. Will it fall out naturally? I am desperate for an answer and so far her dentist office has not given me anything useful except try to find someone else to see her. But I dont want to cause her anymore distress. It really freaked her out last night! Moms PLEASE what should I do??

What can I do next?

I think that maybe you may be wrong about what you are seeing. The permanent tooth grinds the root of the baby tooth down as the permanent tooth comes down. What you are seeing is probably the permanent tooth.

Wait until Monday. I think she is going to be okay.

Baby teeth fall out because their roots have dissolved due to the pressure on them from the adult teeth that are growing in. As long as your daughter isn't in pain, I wouldn't worry. She will be okay until Monday. Most likely her tooth has been wiggly for a while, and the fact that the root has been dissolving over time has probably just made the tooth weaker - so it broke in half. Just see the dentist Monday - she will have an interesting story to tell about losing this tooth!

If the dentist is not worried, assuming you shared the issue, then I would not be worried. I would think that when the adult tooth comes in the baby tooth's root will be pushed out.

I had that happen when I was a kid, I think. Is it just kind of a jagged stump? If so it fell out on its own a month later. I kind of had fun messing with it when I was bored. :p

T.,
I think what you are seeing is the new tooth coming out. Unless you see the tooth you took out in half, I wouldn't worry. If she is not in pain, don't worry about it. Just wait until Monday to see her dentist.

Well, if there is a medical college in your area they may have emergency dental docs in the ER. Call them. Our dental college is in downtown OKC so any of the hospitals associated with the OU medical school would be able to get a doc over quickly or send us to them.

If the dentist is not worried about it this I would just keep an eye on it for swelling or signs of infection. I would however make sure I talked to the actual dentist and not a desk person. They field his calls so he can be with patients and may decide it isn't important when it is. But if you know the doc said to just get her in on Monday then you are good to go with some good observation.

Breathe Mama!! Your daughter is fine. She's not in any pain and can be seen on Monday. Enjoy your weekend and make sure she's comfy, and let us know what the Dr. says on Monday.

Take her to a dentist asap, and worry about the insurance later!

My 4yo broke a tooth off when he was 2 and the bottom of the tooth is still in the gums. The dentist told us it will work its way out eventually as the adult tooth pushes it out.

What should you do? Stop freaking out because that's probably freaking her out.

It's either the new tooth coming in, or it is the bottom part of the baby tooth. Either way it's no big deal. If it's the remainder of the baby tooth, it will come out when the adult tooth pushes it out. If it's not causing her any pain, what's the worry? Sounds like she's doing fine.

Is she in pain? I would call around, but I would take that Monday appoint just in case you can't find someone. I would call her dentist back and ask if this is an actual emergency in which the root is in trouble for becoming infected. It doesn't sound like an immediate emergency though.

"It's best to encourage your child to wiggle the tooth out on his own," explains Gerald Ferretti, D.D.S., a professor of pediatric dentistry at the University of Kentucky, in Lexington. "If it's extremely loose, you can take a tissue and try to rotate the tooth," Dr. White adds. If there's no root left, you should be able to pull it out easily. But don't force it, and never tie it to a string and yank -- if the root is only half dissolved, it could break and become infected."
