I am planning to take my children (age 10 and 5) to Dallas Zoo. It's our first time there. So I would like to know how much time do we need. Is it too much of a walk? What kind of food is available? Any other dos and don'ts will be appreciated.

thanks

I have gone to both the Dallas and Ft Worth Zoo. I prefer the Ft Worth Zoo 100% more that Dallas. There are eating places at the FT Worth Zoo. They had Grandys I think it was where we went. It is a pretty long drive from where I live but WELL WORTH IT! Dallas Zoo just seemed a bit dead to me. I did take lunch bags with snacks and drinks with those blue freezer things to keep things cold. It was June when we went so we needed drinks badly! I cant wait to take a trip to the zoo again the kids LOVED it.

You can easily spend the entire day - at least morning or afternoon - at the Dallas Zoo. There are two main sections - Zoo North and The Wilds of Africa. Both are great. The Wilds of Africa has the monorail tour (call ahead to see if it's open/running). If I were you, I would be open to spending a morning or afternoon there (earlier is better) and also open to not seeing everything. I've rarely visited the entire zoo in a single visit.

The food is pretty typical. There are numerous eating facilities but it's your usual zoo fare.

We went to the Dallas Zoo today and it was GREAT! We had a great day. The trails are well shaded and everything was a comfortable walk. I have heard some uncomplimentary things about the Dallas Zoo, but we found it to be a great experience and very well kept. We love zoos and have visited several of them and the Dallas Zoo holds it's own very well! Go and enjoy this wonderful local resource!

We went to the Ft. Worth Zoo today and had a great time! We took our lunch and ate in a covered picnic pavillion.

Also, Wednesdays are 1/2 price day there... adult tickets are $5.25 and kids over 2 are $4 at the reduced rate. It was a beautiful zoo with lots to see and lots of benches and shade. We will definitely go again.

Yes, the food is a tad bit expensive. I always pack a lunch for my girls & I & just use a large back pack to store it in so my arms are free.

The Dallas zoo is much smaller than the Ft. Worth zoo. I think our normal stay is a total of 3-4 hours or depending how much my girls want to run around some more. There is a cool kids area for the kids to play in a small creek. So be prepared to take of your shoes & have fun in the water!

This is the best time to go before it gets too hot!

In regards to childrens participation the Dallas zoo far exceeds the Ft. Worth zoo but if you are looking for something really pretty and a "nicer" walk the Ft. Worth zoo is the place for you. The Dallas Zoo has a great children's area for picnics etc. and that way you don't feel pressured to spend all that extra money on food that doesn't really taste that good anyway! :) 3-4 hours seems to be a fair amount of time to expect to spend there. There is also a carousel and an above the ground monorail/train type ride that you may want to bring money for if you kids like that kind of thing. Have a great time-we are going there on Spring Break.

I recommend visiting Ft. Worth zoo over Dallas if its convenient for you. http://www.fortworthzoo.com/
Let me know if you have any questions after visiting their website. I went recently with my girlfriend and our children enjoyed it - its layed out well, a great walk - and they did have a couple of options for snack/light lunch. Plus, hardly anyone was there - so it felt much like we had the place to ourselves.
