I lived in San Diego, CA for nearly 16 years and recently completed a work assignment in Las Vegas, NV. I am single mother and I am trying to determine which is the better city to relocate to - 1. Back to San Diego or 2. Dallas, Tx. I have job opportunities in both but I am not familiar with Dallas, TX other than a few visits. Is Dallas a great place to live?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the invaluable and timely responses. Since I lived in Las Vegas I am accustomed to 105 - 116 hot summer days, granted without the humidity. I also lived in Seattle for short period of time (and experienced snow).
But overall, it seems like it would be great move for my family. I do not have immediate family in Texas. Most of my family has relocated back to Florida. But I have some friends and extended family in Austin, TX and I believe it will be a good half way point for my family in Florida. My oldest also attends Arizona State University, so again I believe Texas is a good half way point.
Thank you so much for the feedback, I guess I need to take one big leap

Hi there I was born and raised in the DFW area and LOVED IT! I had to move to AZ with my hubby 2 years ago and miss home so much. There is so much to do in DFW area for adults, kids, families, and etc. It is also like a food capital whatever food you are craving you can find it. My hubby and I miss the food from TX because here in AZ it is just not that great so we eat at home all the time. I miss Dallas because people are so friendly there. You will meet people very easily unlike AZ. Also it is so green and I miss that being in the desert. The schools are wonderful and TX has a really good academic program. The housing market it doing better than most states. I love TX and hope to go back soon and be with my family. You won't regret it. There is no place like TX. It ROCKS!

It has been great for us here, better home, less commute, great schools. We live in Plano, moved from Rancho Cucamonga. The only down side is we thought we would make it back home for visits more often. We are only just now going for our 3rd visit in 10 years. I am sure we could have saved a bit better and made it out more, but it is still just so expensive to get back home. We truly do feel we are missing out on extended family.

Dallas isn't a bad place to live- there are a ton of great things about the area, but really look around to where you would be moving, there are some not so nice places to live also.
Soccer is really big out here if your kids like sports. And even though we are not close to the ocean out here there are plenty of lakes around to have fun at. Lots of State Parks within a couple of hours. Some of the schools are really good(depends on the area, so do your homework on that!) The Dallas Farmers market is pretty cool. I don't think it is extremely hot out here although it does get up there! Winters aren't too bad- we get a little snow every once in a while. It is windy out here though.
Do some more research on the area. I prefer the smaller cities around Dallas/Fort Worth rather than the actual cities.
Good luck!

It's Texas, that means it's great. hehe. The Dallas area has a lot of really modern great stuff, very affordable housing, and our economy has done pretty good compared to many other places. You might want to look into surrounding cities for your home, though. There's Plano, Allen, Richardson, Frisco...can't remember them all. It's a nice area. It won't be as beautiful as CA, but it's a great place to live.

There are some really great communities here in Dallas. Some not so great also, but I know you see areas like that in San Diego, as well. What you have hear is the economy. It is much healthier then many states. The housing market is still decent. You can get an awesome house for very little. The cost of living is WAY less here. I was born in California and have family still there. The general consensus is that the school districts out here are generally better. Many of the districts have an open policy, meaning you can choose which public schools your child goes to. We have some of the best gifted/talented and magnet schools in the country here. I am not a huge fan of Southern California, so I would say I am more biased. Melanie is right. It's HOT in the summer. There are weeks and weeks of 100 +, and 105+ days. There are lots of public pools, though! The winters are not a breeze. We get lots of ice and it does get very cold. However, they are not terribly long winters. And, the bad days are not often. There is usually some days in the 60's during winter, also. Nothing beats fall and spring here.

I love it here. Would you actually be in Dallas or one of the suburbs? The suburbs are usually better for schools. Let me know and I can give you more info. Do you have family close to either place--what would be your support system?
We do have a mild winter, not the year round sunshine and warm weather of SD. But, Our housing market is much better.

I live in Plano, outside of Dallas and YES, I think so. I am originally from Illinois but have lived in Texas for almost 14 years (10 of them in San Antonio). I moved to Texas to be closer to my parents, as I've gotten older the closer I want to be by them. I want my children to know their grandparents. I'm from a close family, my husband isn't, so he doesn't mind moving around for me. I'm not sure how close you are to your family or how important that is to you. If you have family in San Diego, I may lean towards that, but I'm about family. It gets really HOT in the summers here, but I think that is why A/C was created... LOL

Dallas is a great place to raise a child. I lived in orange county california for 35 years and loved it but would not want to raise my child there. THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH TEXAS IS THE WEATHER. You child could not play outside much and the allergies are worse here. I really miss going to the beach and the beautiful weather. Dallas does not have El pollo loco but does have in and out burger, taco bell and Del taco. Homes are alot cheaper in Dallas. You can get a mortage that would be less than renting an appt in San Diego.

We've been in Plano/Allen burb north of Dallas since 1989. LOVE IT. We've had opportunities to move but we just don't want to.

They economy and housing market is not as bad as it is in some areas. Our housing market took a hit in the late 80's. We love the weather, great schools.

We are inside an hour from both Love Field and DFW airport. You can fly for 2- 3 hrs and be on either coast! The options for flying are great as well. We have our company located here and love it.

You should be able to get a visit here before you make your decision.

Welcome to TX if you choose to come here! PM me if you like.
