HI I was told three years ago i had a cyst on my ovary. They did a unltrasound and continue to do one every year. They wont remove it though. I have alot of pain sometimes because of it. Especially as my menstraul cycle comes. They say its small and has only grown very little in the three years. Has anyone else had this? What helped with the pain. THey gave me naproxin but to be honest it doesnt help much. Thanks

What can I do next?

They may not want to remove it because there's a high risk of damaging the ovary.

Hi S., I have had this problem before. I have had them many times. The only thing the Doctors had me do was go on birthcontrol. There is something in the medication that makes them go away and keeps them away. The doctor only gave me vicodin when my burst and that was very painful. So becareful in what you do. They will not take it out unless it gets bigger than 6cm. I hope this helps alittle.

Did they ever see if you have PCO (poly cystic ovary)? I have this and I have a bunch of cysts on my ovaries. I have what they call a string of pearls. On the ultrasound my ovary looked like a chooclate chip cookie. My sister has this too. She just had one of the cysts removed due to the pain she was in. At first the Dr. wanted to see if it would dissolve or not. Hers too was small but it also started to twist the ovary which was causing the pain. The pain was so bad that she could even wear jeans because the pressure of the jeans on her belly hurt like hell. I would go for a second opinion or just tell the Dr. Hey I can't function due to the fact you are in so much pain. Hope that helped.

I have had cysts scence i was 17.After i had my oldest son. I always took tylenol 3 for the pain. They put me on naproxin last year and it didn't help much either. I had a hystorectomy in january of this year and it helped alot with all the pain and bloating. My stomach would bloat up so bad when the cyst would burst. I looked like i was 6 months pregnant. i know how much of a pain it is. but, doctors usually won't do anything for it until it is too big. I had a cyst on my left ovary that was 1 inch in diameter and a 2 inch one on the right one at the same time. Someone told me that they can be caused by being on birth control for a long time. I was taking depo when i started getting mine. I hope you find somethin that works for you to control the pain. I wish you the best. keep me posted.

S.,

My sister and I both get cysts on our ovaries with some regularity. I've never heard of one that stuck around for 3 years. Mine usually rupture before I even know that they are there causing very intense pain that lasts for about 6-8 hours. With the cysts that my sister and I get, until they rupture we have no idea that they are there... and the biggest one I had was the size of a softball. Just my advice, but I would seek another doctor's opinion. It could very possibly be something like a fibroid or some other growth, since you said you have more pain during your cycle.

I hope that whatever it turns out to be can be easily and quickly taken care of.

My mom has had ovarian cyst for years and they've never done anything. She's had a bunch rupture. She's on a medication to help make them stop forming and some pain killer when they rupture but from what I know nothing really helps with the pain. I'm sorry to say that but from what my mom says nothing has worked for her and she's been having them since before I was born.

I suffered with cysts for 20 YEARS!!!! One was the size of a large orange. My "trusted" gyno said he could take it out through scope. It broke and my body went septicand I almost drowned in the fluid that filled my lungs. I fell into a coma in 24 hours. I was in the hospital for 19 days. Luckily better doctors came to my rescue. I fought painful cysts for years after that. At 39yo they got so bad I had to have my ovaries and tubes out. When they removed my ovaries, they crumbled in the doctors hands. I now am on horrible HRT. Go get them taken out. Even if you need surgery every other year. You don't want to go through what I had to.

Hi S.,
I had the same problem about 7 years ago . When I was in my early 20's they told me that I had a cyst on my ovary but it was small and not to worry about it, it went away and every month before my menstral cycle it came back with excruciating pain. I finally told my gyn that I could not deal with it anymore and when they checked me this time the cyst was the size of a grapefruit and they decided to remove it. We went through the whole process and I finally had it removed along with my ovary because that collapsed when they drained the cyst. they also had to remove part of my fallopian tube. When they removed it the cyst was the size of a basketball, so it grew rather rapidly in the time between finding it and surgery.I found using a heating pad and warm soaks helped a little, but nothing took the pain away completely. Just make sure they stay on top of it because like I found out they can grow rather quickly.Good luck to you.

Is it very large or growing? I have had two ruptured ovarian cysts and those were very painful, but only when they ruptured. Is it painful because it's hitting something else? Is your dr. concerned about it rupturing?

I had cysts on both my ovaries. The only reason i knew i had these was because i found out i was pregnant with my third child. I kept telling the doctors my sides hurt and automatically they thought i was having a tubal pregnancy. Well to cut to the chase they gave me that same medicine. After i had my daughter they gave vicoden and scheduled me for surgery 6 wks later. They took one ovary and left my other ovary so i would not go through menupause so early. I understand where you are coming from the pain is real bad. I honestly have no pain since they did the surgery but i also did not want to have any more children(i have 3) the best thing i could tell you other then having the surgery is to go to the magee satalite office over in bethel park and talk to a dr. Nicholas. She is one of the best ob/gyn in the pittsburgh area. If you want her number just email me at ____@____.com and i will give it to you. Hope everything works out

My mother has had two since i was 4 and i am now 23 and she had a partial hist and they left them, b/c they are GOOD things and we had 4 doctors tell us that but yes she said that the pain is unbarable sometimes she also has tumors there and she has seen atleast 4 OBs who also say that b/c they are at the ends of her tubes that they are good and that is part of her pain. She still releases egges so they get stuck in the tubes till they melt and slip by the tumors. I have been checked since i was 16 for the same things b/c i have very long and painful cycles and b/c one doctor told us it runs in families. Oh and for pain she was told to "take 2 asprin and call the doctor if it hurt in a few days". She takes midal it helps alittle.

Good luck! I had one for years and I was never given anything for the pain. The only times it was really bad were when I was menstruating. I really hope they eventually remove it for you, becuase it's horrible when they rupture. I was so sick and had such horrible pain. They almost removed my appendix because that's what they thought it was. I was in the hospital overnight, but then the next day I was fine. It was really weird, I really hope you don't have to go through that! Good luck!

Dear S.,

I would get a second opinion. I had an ovarian cyst when I was 17. It did not cause me pain but it was quite large, about the size of an orange. The doctor (a female gyn) thought it should come out and hoped to remove it through laparoscopy. Because of it's size and the way it was formed she could not and I had to have a full blown surgery to remove it. I was young and the surgery was painful to recover from. However, I was able to avoid it bursting. She also suggested BC pills to regulate hormones and avoid a recurrence. I've never had another. Good luck to you!
