Cut Apples for Lunch

I was wondering, how to keep the apples from changing color from the time I cut them 7 am to lunch at 12:30.
These are for my kids lunch and the little bag ones are expensive and apples I usually buy by the bulk.
Any step by step instructions please?

I tried the salt water, but didn't work good.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all. I will try all the tips and yes my kids don't eat them when they change color.

I always used the single serve bags but I in a pinch I have used apples on hand and I just dip them in some lemon water. Works great!

I agree with Katie L. and S.H. I have always just out them in their lunches sliced with no "treatment." They don't complain and they eat them because they know it's not a big deal. I really do not have time in the morning to make lunches AND dip every slice in a special non-browning solution. Isn't it enough that I make them a healthy breakfast and healthy lunch every morning :)

Lemon juice does work, but I actually use another trick. I slice it, and then re-assemble it. Put the slices back together (around the core, which you can tell the kids they obviously don't need to eat!), and then use a clean rubber band to hold it back together. Works like a charm because the air doesn't get back to the exposed apples. Good luck!

My kids just eat them, even though they've turned a little brown. They still taste the same. Have your kids complained? If not, I wouldn't worry about. If they have, maybe you can talk to them about how they don't taste any different. Personally, I don't feel like spending the time dipping apples in lemon juice (I mean, I'm already cutting the dang things, right?!). But I suppose if my kiddo refused to eat them then I'd have to do something! Good luck :)

Apples being brown does not mean it is not good anymore.
My kids eat apples if it turned brown after its cut.
Its the same.
Its just oxidized.
Apples turn brown as soon as cut edges hit the air.
My kids know that.
They'll still eat it.

When I make fruit salad, etc.., I use "Fresh Fruit". You sprinkle it on/in your fruit and it keeps it from browning. That's what many bakers and chefs use. You can find it usually in the isle where baking/canning supplies are, and sometimes in the jello-o area. Sprinkle a little on, shake it around.. voila!

Well, they tend to brown.

We get the little bags (organic). The kids eat them and no brown, no waste.

Lemon juice works but makes the apple a little tart. You could also try dipping it in orange juice. If your kids don't mind the skin of the apple...I make four slices in the apple, like I am coring it but I don't cut all the way through. I then wrap it tightly in tin foil and my daughter just breaks it apart at lunch.

If you can send whole apples, we chop them with the apple slicer and then send it that way all hooked together in a bag. She can pull off each piece and they have not changed color and then throw out the core when she's done.

I use a mix of water & lemon juice. Usually, the ratio is two parts water to one part lemon juice. It does the trick without the lemon-y taste.

I've always heard lemon juice.
For an event at school, 7 Up and/or Sprite was used.

Lemon juice is a bit tart so if I'm cutting the apple, which is only if a tooth is loose and its hard to just bite into it, I use orange juice. My daughter prefers that to lemon.

That being said, I think its good to encourage them to just bite into the apple. Its good for teeth and gums and stops them from having to have their fruit cut for them every time.

Whenever possible we buy the variety "Empire" apples. For some odd reason they do not oxidize like other apples. Therefore I can cut them, put them in their lunches without any treatment, and they do not brown like other apples.

Whenever I can not find them, I try dipping them in lemon water, and it does a so-so job.

They also sell "Fruit Fresh" which is citric acid and is supposed to do the same as lemon water.
