Curious About Daughter's Rash

My 10 1/2 month-old daughter has a bright red rash all over her face, on her torso, and across her back. It's worse when she wakes up from a nap or night's sleep and after riding in the car for a while, especially when it's hot out. We tried strawberries this week since she's had no other food allergies, but another mom said it looks like a food reaction.

Have any of your children reacted to strawberries? How long did the rash last after the baby's last exposure? Was there anything you could do to help it go away?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It was a virus, complete with a 104-degree fever. Apparently, many kids get rashes from viruses and fevers; mine must be one of them!

It could a food rash, but it might also be a heat rash since you notice it most when she's been in bed and/or riding in her car seat. If it doesn't go away after you stop the strawberries, then I bet it is a heat rash.

Take her to the dr. It could be heat rash, an allergic reaction to the strawberries, eczema, etc. The doc will know and offer the best advice.

Strawberries are delicious and a wonderful fruit, but I have found them to be one of the first fruits to cause allergic reactions. I would guess that may be the problem, but like others have said, that rash sounds like something you should check out with her Dr. just to be sure.

It might be head rash, my son gets it on his torso (front and back) when there is a big temp change.

If it is an allergic reaction to the strawberries, contact your pediatrician about giving your daughter the appropriate dose of Benedryll. Or they may have another suggestion. Don't give her anymore strawberries until she is older. Strawberries are on the list of foods that can cause allergic reations. She may tolerate it better when she is older and her system can handle whatever it is that causes the reaction. Maybe try again next spring.

I have learned that it is best to go to the doctor when my kids have rashes rather than driving myself crazy trying to figure it out since there are SO many possibilities. It is entirely possible it is an allergic reaction and the heat would create more swelling by nature, but I would still have a doc look at it.

Hi J.-Strawberries are one of the biggest known allergens-next to nuts and eggs-and never never give your child non-organic Strawberries the toxicity of strawberries is off the charts-I was allergic to them as a child and had rashes like heat rash all over-could have been the pesticides, but I am ok with organic and so are my chilren-best to wait till after year old before trying organic again, it may take a week to get it out of her system....good luck-L.

Hi J.,

My daughter was waking up with rashes on her torso, neck, chest and face here and there for a couple of weeks, and I was worried it was a food reaction too. Come to find out it was just a heat rash. It would stay for a few days when it was really hot, and then go away. She never has had a food reaction, though, so I don't know how to tell the rashes apart. If you want a better idea of what a rash due to food allergy looks like without the expensive doctor bill, go to Google.com, click on Images and type in food allergy rash. This may bring up photos of actual food allergy rashes. Then do the same for heat rash. This way you may be able to find out the difference and have a better idea of if it's something to be concerned about. Hope this helps! Good luck!

HI J. -

It sounds as though it might be heat rash -- many babies get it -- it just sort of comes and goes. But if you are the least bit worried about food allergies, I'd check in with the pediatrician right away.

Best,

J.

Dear J.,
It could be a food reaction, but they don't usually last for days and days after not having the food.
It sounds more to me like it happens if she gets hot and sweaty....
The next thing I would try is seeing if different types of clothing fibers have anything to do with it. Or, the type of soaps, fabric softeners, etc you are using.
My daughter developed a terrible rash. Only in one place. Well, everywhere that her disposable diaper touched her skin. Turned out she was alergic so I had to switch to cloth diapers. It cleared right up.
See if having her in cotton, breathable clothing makes a difference as well as only using non-fragrance detergents, etc. I'm sorry I can't remember which brand, but my son didn't tolerate a certain type of fabric softener. None of the other ones bothered him.
He's 13 now and it doesn't matter what I use anymore. But he was always a "hot" sleeper...he got sweaty. To this day, he only sleeps in his underpants. He gets too hot.

Wishing you the best!

Hi J.,
Many different things can cause rashes. Has your daughter had a fever? My daughter, at about 19 months had something called "slap cheek virus" (which I had never heard of until her pediatrician mentioned it.) The virus starts with a mysterious fever, with no other symptoms other than a general ill feeling, then about a week or so later, a rash appears on the cheeks, torso and back. My daughter's rash didn't last very long (a couple days or so) and I remember it being worse when she woke up, and then would gradually fade a bit. It looked, however, more lace-like than you are describing from your daughter. The babies are not contagious once the rash appears, but at THAT point, doctor's know what it is! They are contagious during the fever period. My daughter's was 102.6. You might Google "slap cheek virus" and see her pediatrician. Good luck! M.

My advice is to get her some Benadryl and a doctor's appointment. It could very well be a food reaction, but doctors see a lot of rashes and can help figure it out. Poor thing--I hope she's feeling better.

Sounds like it could be an allergic reaction. Fresh strawberries/berries are a no-no to children under one, like eggs, nuts etc. I would take her to the dr. to be sure. If she is allergic and you give her more she could have a worse reaction. Don't wait, take her in.

My cousin has a 7 month old baby and the poor baby has had a rash since she was 3 months. We could not figure out why for a while, until we discovered that my cousin was eating peanut butter sandwiches and she was still nursing the baby. So be careful of what you eat if you're nursing because it gets passed down to the baby. The doctor gave her some antibiotics just recently since before she was too young to be on those meds and she's much better now. Good luck!

This sounds a lot like the heat rash one of my granddaughters is plagued with. She can't wear anything very warm at night and sleeps with a fan most of the time. Try mostly cotton sleepers. A lot of fabrics are a blend these days. She is 13 now and still deals with easily getting overheated and red in the face and chest. It also sounds a lot like simple dermatitis (skin irritation) from bath soap which is further irritated by heat. Pediatritions recommend plain old Dove soap when other bath products irritate baby's skin. Give that a try and Good Luck

pull the strawberries out of her diet. Yes they can cause a rash, but if you're saying it's more severe after a nap or when it's hot... have you explored the idea of heat rash?

J.,
My son had allergies early on when he was 2mos old. I was breast feeding at the time so if you are breast feeding consider what you are eating. I was eatting an egg a day and he got tested and was allergic to eggs. So, not to waste time because he advoided eggs for a year and half he can eat eggs now. Please ask your doctor to test your girl for any allergies of food and or the enviorment ie dogs, cats, mold now so she may grow out of it. It is easy to get tested.

Both of my kids had the allergic reaction to strawberries. Our pedi confirmed that it was in fact the new love of the fruit. Berries are common to cause a rash all over. Looks painful, but my kids didn't even know it was there. The good news is, it goes away, and unlike peanut or other food allergies is will not cause the anaphylactic reactions and happily, today, my children have outgrown it and love strawberries!

My son (15 mo) is allergic to strawberries. The rash typically lasts about 2 days, although he only gets it on his diaper area. The good news is, strawberry allergy is typically outgrown during childhood. I hope you can figure out what it is and get it cleared up!

It kind of sounds like Roseola too. Probably best to have a doc help you figure out what is going on....
