Csa's and Local Farmer's Markets

Hello Ladies,

My husband and I are big into gardening but this year we won't be able to have one. (We just moved into a new house with a lot of shade and brush that we plan on cleaning out in the fall.) Does anyone have any advice on good CSA's or good farmer's market around metro-Detroit? We are especially into organic foods so any feedback would be great!

Thanks again!

Hi Gina---Besides the Eastern Mkt, there is a really great one right in Royal Oak. One of the farmers there also offers CSA shares. They are from the Lapeer area, organic. Look up Maple Creek Farm on the internet.

You could also just google CSA's, etc and you'd probably find a list of additional ones there.

We were members of Maple Creek last year and got some really great food. Don't forget to use pots for gardening if you have ANY sunny spots at all. I've got tomatoes and peppers, as well as beets and swiss chard in pots. Good luck and feel free to contact me if you have any questions about container gardening.

Rochester has a farmers market downtown Saturdays and Auburn Hills is starting one this Summer. there is also one in Waterford near the scout shop and one in Royal oak - google Michigan farmers markets and you should be on the right track!. Also there is a CSA in the thumb that delivers to this area weekly so google that too - can't remember the name but i know it runs around 29 dollars per week....

We have a plot at the place that Cindy linked you to! They are super friendly and very helpful. You can choose between a green plot(you tend and plant yourself) or yellow where they do the work for you and you just come out and harvest.
Here is another option: http://www.localharvest.org/csa/
And one more: http://doortodoororganics.com/
And depending where you are there are many farmer's markets around.
Enjoy!

Hi there -- another shout out for Maple Creek Farm -- they offer local drop points around the Detroit metro area and have reduced prices this year (for more family-friendly-sized shares). Wonderful food, local and organic -- almost delivered to your door. Can't say enough about them!

Also echoing Eastern Market (it's the best!) and the Royal Oak Farmer's Market... Birmingham also has a farmer's market, but may be a bit more pricey (higher-income area). All have great local and organic options.

You'll also find a number of local groceries do carry Michigan-grown organic produce if you're doing regular shopping (Westborn Markets, Western Market in Ferndale, Holiday Market in Royal Oak, and all Meijer locations, although "big-box" stores, are proud to offer local Michigan organic as well -- just to name a few).

Enjoy!

Hi Gina -

Have you been to Eastern Market in Detroit? It is pretty close by freeway (google a map) and even though it is actually Detroit, very safe and lots of fun for kids. The produce is plentiful and pretty cheap, too! :)

Don't know where you live. Eastern Market near the Detroit Medical Ctr is always an experience. Warren, Royal Oak, and lots of other communities have their own.

I recently read the article below in my local paper. I thought it was a fantastic idea for families that don't have the space or know how to garden. Plus, it sounds like just a nice experience to have with your family.

It might be a bit of a drive for you but maybe not too bad if you just want to go on a Saturday or Sunday.
