Crib Tent - Do They Work? Are They Safe?

My 15 month old daughter is becoming very interested in crawling over things, trying to climb into the tub on her own, and trying to crawl out of her crib. She has successfully thrown her leg up over the side of the bathtub and proceeded to pull herself over. If I hadn't stopped her she would have made it over. I am growing increasingly worried that she will be able to crawl out of her crib when I am not watching. Someone mentioned using a "crib tent" to prevent this. Has anyone used one? Are they safe? Do they prevent the child from crawling out? Thank you! Any advice is appreciated.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your input! I ended up buying a crib tent - like one of the responders mentioned, I let her play with it - under it- on the floor before I mounted it to the crib. We mounted it the next day and she was not afraid at all. She took right too it. It has been working perfectly. Thank you very much for the suggestions!

We took the crib down when that became an issue. Now she climbs in our bed every night at 2 a.m., however she doesn't fall out of the bed.

My mom had to use tents for my twin sisters. They were climbers. They also always managed to get into mischief.

No issues either way.

Hi C.! My friend used a crib tent for her autistic son when he started climbing out of his crib and it helped her out a lot, it prevented him from climbing out and she didn't have any problems with it. My niece at that age climbed out and bumped her head so they put her in a regular bed with side rails. My friend put hers in a toddler bed. Then they had to deal with the kids getting out of their bed in the middle of the night and going into mom and dad's room or getting lost in the house!

We took our daughter of a crib when she tried to climb around 14 months. If your child is trying to get out, swith over to a toddler bed. A tent may solve things temporalily but not really fixing the solution. What if she can find a way out and get stuck in between? It always remined me of something for animals.
It's safer to have them close to the ground at that stage and use a gate on the bedroom door. It took my daughter only a few days to learn to stay in her bed. I have the cutest picture of her asleep in the doorway!
It just depends on your preference.

C.,
My daughter did the same thing at about your daughter's age. I felt she wasn't mature enough to handle the responsibility of a toddler bed. We did get a crib tent. It was about $75 but is was great! We set it up on the floor and we played in it to get used to it. Then I said, "Let's put it on your crib!" Then she slept in it. She was fine! The zipper is on the outside and I do not see a possible way that she could get inbetween the tent and crib or get out without help. The entire tent is that see through mesh material. After her 2nd birthday, sometime, we set up the toddler bed and let her nap in it (still with the crib up). Then as she felt more confident about her "big girl" bed, we took down her crib together. She felt good about the whole thing. Good luck! Maybe you can find one that someone is done with to save expense.

Crib tents are awesome!!! I had to get them for my twin boys when they were 16 months old. They are no where near ready for a regular bed. We played like we were in tents all the time so when I bought it for them-- I kind of made it an exciting thing that they got this "brand new tent for their beds". It has been a life saver.

Hi C.,

My son was about the same age when he got out of his crib while I was in the shower. I remember clearly going to check on him and seeing an empty crib. My husband was out of town on a business trip (of course), so I got dressed, put the kids' shoes on, and went directly to a Babies R Us for the tent. It took a couple of nights for him to get used to it, but it worked out perfectly (until he figured out how to unzip the tent from the inside, and then I just had to safety-pin it closed). My friend has one for her little monkey, too. Good luck!
