We were visiting my parents so we brought them a little gift - we wrapped up a copy of the ultrasound image. They loved it!

We gave my MIL a frame that said something like "a baby is a blessing" and stuck a picture of our first ultrasound in it. When she opened her gift, she thanked me for the frame and set it aside. I had overlooked the fact that she is farsighted and can't read anything without her reading glasses! When we told her to get her glasses and take a look at the frame, she balled her head off.

We did gifts from the baby. It was Christmas time so it was perfect. My dad received a book he read to us when we were little. The card said something like "I can't wait to snuggle up with you and hear you read this book to me." My mom does scrapbooking so I found some baby scrapbooking stickers and made a note saying "I know how much she loves scrapbooking so maybe she could teach me how to do my own." It took them a minute to figure out what was going on (especially since they didn't know we were trying) but it was great. Good luck.

For Easter we had a basket center piece with a picture of the ultrsound, due date written on an egg and other baby things in the basket. It took over an hour for someone to notice!!!! If you do it for thankgiving you could put out a conicopia(sp?) and put the picture of baby things in there

Our first (for both sides) was near to Mother's Day, so we bought "Grandmother" greeting cards, instead of the usual "Mother" ones. It took my mother-in-law a minute to click in, but she finally got it.

How about a "Grandma" Halloween card, or birthday card, etc.?

If you or your hubby's bday is coming up I had my local grocery store make a cake with my ultrasound pic on it (it was my hubby's 40th bday party) and has them put Baby C. and the due date on it. I made up some story that my husband and I took a "cooking" class and this is what we "created". Both of our parents opened up the box with the cake and we got their reaction on video. It was a total surprise for everyone!!

With our first I bought a hallmark card that had a baby on the front and blank on the inside. Inside I taped the first ultrasound picture and wrote something like:
"Hello Grandma and Grandpa, I'm only 5 weeks old and don't have any feet or arms, but I'm growing and will see you in about 35 weeks." Then I mailed it to them.
They all loved it. Congratulations!

We told my in-laws by giving my mother-in-law (it was around Mother's Day)a package of trial size baby stuff like powder, lotion, wash, etc(came all together at the store). Note said something like "stuff to keep at your house".

Good luck!

Go to a place like Color Me Mine etc and make them a custom "Grandma/pa" Mug. Babies R Us has picture frames with matting that says things like "baby in progress" or "onthe way" that's meant for an ultrasound picture. Invite them over for dinner and on the bottom of one of your clear serving pieces tape a paper that says "we're having a baby/the due date/etc".

well A., congrats to you both first of all! i hope all goes well for you both. you have so many suggestions, but here is mine. for our first born we all went to dinner w/ both sides of the family to a pizza place and had the workers there write w/ a big black marker on the pizza boards before they put the pizza on it ( to serve it) they cooked it first. but what we had them write was " is it a boy or a girl?" on 1 pizza board and on the other "or is is twins?"
so as every-one was eating the pizza they would see the writing and wonder what is this? so it was a slow surprise, but we ended up having the two grandma's to be take off the final pieces to see what it did say on there!
it was cute and worked our great!
good luck w/ your idea!

With my first child we had pictures to show the family so we put the ultra sound picture into the pile of pictures so when they looked through it the picture was there. It was funny to see my moms face because she wasn't sure at first what was going on. Congrat's it's an exciting time.

My niece had the whole family over for Thanksgiving. She had a bowl of pink & blue M & M's. They had boy or girl printed on them. It took awhile but, it was crazy once everyone figured it out. M & M's will make you the custom candies. Just go to their web site. For the second baby, she gave the Grandma's a card with a pic of the ultrasound in it. What a hoot!

We carved a pumpkin with the word "BABY" & had it sitting outside in our Fall decorations when the Grandparents arrived for a special visit. For the 2nd child we drew names out of a hat for Christmas gifting purposes. Prior to drawing we had replaced all of the slips of paper with papers saying "Baby ______." It was funny because as everyone was looking at their selection they were all somewhat perplexed as to what that meant & didn't know whether to announce what was on the paper they had drawn (not knowing that everyone else had drawn the same thing). Enjoy & good luck!

My husband and I went out to dinner with both sets of parents and we had made a special menu in which everything was "baby"..."baby carrots with...", "baby spinach salad with..." and so on until it can to dessert and we said, "vanilla icecream served with a pickle on the side" and then "congratulations, baby {insert last name} due January 2010". However you tell them they will never forget!!! P.S. the restaurant was in on the surprise and gave us a little more time instead of hovering over us for our order...they also brought out the bubbly when they saw that everyone was celebrating...they new our parents would need it at that point!!! Congratulations!

My parents live far away. I made a self made photo album on some colorful paper and put some pictures in it from our last trip. On the last page of that picture I put a copy of the ultrasound. I really liked it. Problem is my parents were not ready to be grandparents so the expected response was not there.
You can alos go to these print services and find some ideas there, e.g. www.vistaprint.com

Send the stork to tell them. People lease the storks that say girl or boy that can be put in their front lawns. Have them put both girl and boy and place them in their yards. Well that would tell the community and have them thinking someone put it in front of the wrong house. Good luck and congrats to the both of you.

When my husband and I told my parents we gave them a partylite luminary that I decorated with pink and blue paper with little baby hand and footprint stickers. The paper was just inserted between the planes of glass so they could reuse it if they wanted to. I also went through my collection of partylite candles and gave both sets of parents a half doz pink and blue votives. I wrapped them up and gave them to each of the parent on Thanksgiving. Hope this spurs some ideas for you. Congratulations!!

We had the baby write a "letter" to the grandparents to be. We found out we were expecting with our first right around Mother's Day, so the grandma's got a framed letter from their future grandchild. The look on my MIL's face is priceless - I will never forget the reactions we got!!

Congrtulations!! We went over for dinner with dessert and had a pacifier on the cake or you can give them a grandma and me book to read to their grandchild and keep at their house or a picture frame of grandma/grandpa. Anyway you tell them, they will be thrilled. Good luck with your news delivery. Have a healthy and safe pregnancy!
