Has anyone had to experience their baby undergo surgery for craniosynostis? If so, where was the surgery performed and by which surgeon?
Dr. Fearon and Dr. Sacco performed the surgery at Medical City Oct 2. I can't say enough about Dr. Fearon and his team! The PICU at Med. City was wonderful to us and Willem. Today, 10/7, you can hardly tell he had surgery. The swelling wasn't as bad as we had expected and has already subsided drastically. We couldn't be happier with the team of doctors and Willem's results. Thanks to everyone who responded - it was comfort in knowing there are and have been other families who have survived this scary situation!

My son had the surgery with Dr. Hobar & Dr. Sklar at Children's Medical Dallas. He did an EXCELLENT job. It just looked like he had stiches, where I have seen after surgery pics that looked MUCH worse. My son was back to normal in a few days, quicker than me I think. If you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask me. I had SOOO many when I was going through this.
I don't have any children who had it, but have some friends who did. She is a neonatal nurse practitioner, so she has connections in the field. I don't know the name of their dr (was at Baylor, Dallas), but if don't get many responses, email me and I will get his name.
Their son is 7 now and is doing great!
Contact Dr. Hobar at Children's Medical Center regarding surgery for craniosynostosis. He's very good. Also, there is there are twp craniofacial surgeons at Medical City Dallas, but I cannot remember their names.
My daughter had left coronal synastosis and required surgery. She was referred to Dr. Paul Hobar through Children's Medical Center. Because her type of synastosis was not severe he recommended that we wait until she turned 2. Her surgery, performed by both Dr. Hobar and Dr. Sklar was outstanding. It made such a huge difference. Both docs, especially Dr. Hobar, were wonderful to work with. Dr. Sklar doesn't have the best bedside manner, but he's one of the best neurosurgeon's in the Southwest and operated on my first born as well.
Additionally, I have a friend whose infant son required the same surgery and she used Dr. Salyer's team at Medical City. He is also excellent. All these docs, Hobar, Sklar and Salyer all worked on the team to separate the Egyptian twins.
My brother's three children have all had it (his family is now being followed for a study since they have truly defied the odds - two boys and a girl) - and he says he will not be surprised if #4 has it in March.
Although they live in New York, they were very close to coming down here to see Dr. Salyer at Medical City. He has a stellar a reputation. Since there are so many follow up visits, they decided to go with a highly recommended NY doc.
Your child is very fortunate to have parents who are so aware of his/her development, and are prepared to follow the path you have chosen.

Have you contacted your local Early Childhood Intervention Program? Sometimes they have had clients that have dealt with this and may be able to hook you up with some other families. They can also make sure that your little one is on track developmentally. You can call 1-800-628-5115 to find a program near you.

The DOc I work for is African AMerican and was really concerned b/c of hair type that a scar would always be visable- she was wrong. Her son is fantatsic.

Hi V., yes, my 4 mo. old just had the surgery done on 9/11. His neurosurgeon was Dr Brad Weprin and his craniofacial surgeon was Dr. David Genecov (Dr. Sayler's partner) They are both at Medical City Children's. They are the best in the world from what I hear and they did a fabulous job with my son! Medical City is excellent. They have a great PICU which your child will need at least the first night. Does your baby have saggital synostosis or another kind? How old is your baby and has he been diagnosed? What has your pediatrician told you?

My daughter had brain surgery for a different condition using Dr. David Sacco at Children's Medical Center in the Neurosurgeons for Children practice. We were very pleased with both his skill and his willingness to work with us as the parents as partners in our child's care. She was 20 months old at the time. I would choose him again if I had need of a pediatric brain surgeon again. (God willing this doesn't happen... but if it did...)
I currently work at Childrens Medical Center and I think on a whole if you have a sick child you want to go to Childrens. However I used to work at Medical City. Their cranial facial program is very top notch. Medical City used to get kids from across the country. Dr Salyer is famous from the egyptian twins and is very good. Also take a look at Dr Jeff Fearon who is very talented also. He is also very nice. I know that in Dallas there is a cranial facial foundation...they might be able to help you sort where and who you want to do the surgery. Sorry that you have to go through this with your child but glad that you have such good choices here in Dallas.
I am not sure about the docs at Childrens Medical Center.

I have a son that had a brain tumor at birth and we were sent to Children's Medical Center immediately. Our neurosurgeon is Brad Weprin in the group Neurosurgeons for Children. Everyone in the group is extremely knowledgable and fabulous at what they do. I do not know Dr. Salyer, but I understand he is good too. I think he practices at Medical City, though. He was involved with the twins seperation, and that surgery was performed at Childrens. I do not know about MeD City's ICU, and you may not even need it- but I would not take me children anywhere else. One thing to keep in mind is that some of these surgeons have an aweful bedside manner. But I quickly learned that if they can take my son's head apart and put it back together in better shape than it was in, I guess I can go without the small talk and such... Good Luck!!
