So What Happened?

Thank you so much for the great advice everyone!!! He only had a very mild case, so I washed it a couple of times using his soft bristled baby brush and it is gone!! If it comes back, I will make sure to remember all the amazing advice!!! Also on a side note, I do give my son baths regularly and have heard repeatedly that it has nothing to do with the cradle cap.

My son had it when he was young. We rubbed olive oil on his head (messy) and took a baby comb and gently brushed it off. It was gone the next day and never came back.

Hi T.,
Cradle cap looks like light brown or white flakes coming off the babies head. All 3 of my kids had it and we used Neutrogena T (something) shampoo for it. The pediatrician told us it works best and it did. You can't get it in their eyes so be careful about that and it smells pretty bad but it worked. And if not, they eventually outgrow it =)

T. -

My daughter had cradle cap for a long time before I realized it. Her scalp was a just bit scaly and rough. I used safflower oil to get rid of it. I rubbed her scalp with the oil about 10-20 minutes before a bath, then in the bath I gently scrubbed it with a bath scrubbie. It took two or three baths before it was completely gone. Then her head was so soft and smooth.

Good luck.

Hi T., cradle cap looks like dandruff flakes. Sometimes it even looks yellowish and the flakes might even be kind of thick. It's so common that I thought all babies get it. I recently found out that I was wrong. Not all babies get it but at least now you have a good idea of how common it is. Anyway, it's no big deal at all. My son is almost 4 years old, and he still has a little. It doesn't bother him and it never has. It has never hurt or itched and it used to be yellowish and thick. Back when he didn't have much hair and it was obvious, I would gently rub some olive oil into his scalp. Sometimes, if my little'un would let me, I would even take a baby brush and brush his oily head of hair. Either way, I left the oil on for 10 to 20 minutes before washing the oil out. This always left his hair oily, even if I rewashed his hair a couple more times. It wouldn't be until a couple days later, that his hair would look normal and not oily. The good thing about this process is that the oil would loosen the flakes and most of them would comb right out after his bath and his scalp would look great for a couple weeks. Since the cradle cap was never a health issue, I would only do the oil treatment before occasions when he would have his picture taken. My son's cap was worse than many, and sometimes well meaning, yet, annoying strangers would suggest that I take him to a dermatologist or a baby specialist. If you get that too, just smile and thank them for their concern. At four months old, your son was probably at a well check appointment recently and if his doctor wasn't concerned, then don't worry about it. Here's a great website address: www.babycenter.com/0_cradle-cap_80.bc Single parents have so much more work than us married parents. I am 20 years older than you and you have my utmost respect. Keep on plugging away. Sincerely, B. T.

The cradle cap was thick, discolerd flakes.
If it gets really bad you could use a little dandruff shampoo if you have to. My DR said to put it on let it sit for a few minutes then wash it out. I never did have to go this route but like I said the DR said to try if needed.
What did work for me was if I used a slightly firm bristled brush, ( I had no luck with the very soft baby brushes ), and after I put the Aveeno baby wash in thier hair, I would scrub thier heads in little circles with the brush. Not a miracle one time cure, but over time it worked.

I also noticed that one gal said that she "wouldn't let her child get it, that she bathed him everyday". I bathed my twins everyday for the first 2 years of thier life. My daughter never had cradle cap and my son did. It doesn't show up due to lack of cleaning. I know this wasn't a concern of yours but just wanted to mention it.

Hi Tracy

My daughter had Cradle Cap. Like others have suggested, we used olive oil and soft brush to scrub her head. We did it every bath time which was every other or every 3rd day. This was our pediatrician's suggestion. I also wanted to mention it can take awhile to go away. We were vigilant and it just kept coming back. Our pedi assured us that sometimes babies just have it for awhile! I think we were probably dealing with it off and on till she was 5-6 months old.

Good Luck

Hello T.,

If it looks like dandruff, scaly, then it is probably cradle cap. Not to worry, just use a soft brush, maybe the one they gave you when Ayden was born and they gave him his first bath. When you bathe him and wash his hair, scrub gently with that brush to remove the scales. It probably will take several days but it will eventually go away. There is no need to use the products one can find at the stores.
Afterwards, keep an eye on it. My son had a tendency to get it on the top of his head and it would come back regularly until he was almost 3.

Good luck.

A hundred years ago when mine were young--now 27,21,19-- cradle cap was a thick, white-ish, almost like a scab on their scalp. Pediatrician at the time said stick your finger in the head and shoulders bottle, the little that sticks to your finger is enough to wash their hair with-- of course they are reclined so you don't rinse the soap into their eyes. A thin layer of vaseline above the eyes helps divert the runoff as well. Worked like a charm for us...and they still use dandruff shampoos!!

Don't be afraid of the cradle cap! If you wet the head and use a Johnson and Johnson shampoo. Saturate the head with the shampoo and water then use a textured wash cloth (not a baby cloth) or a nail brush and scrub!

It is so funny I always hear about these people buying $30.00 shampoo and it doesn't work. Just scrub it right off. The area may look a little red afterwards but will clear up shortly after! You may have to repeat the process a couple days in a row. By the way I have worked with infants for years in a medical facility and this is what we did.

Good luck!

Hi - All three of my kids had cradle cap. It looks flaky or scaly and sometimes yellowish. I found the best treatment to be mixing a tablespoon of olive oil with a drop or two of tea tree oil and rubbing it on the scalp. Let it sit for 5 or 10 minutes then shampoo. (This is a good chance for fun with hair :) - try a baby mohawk - hee hee!) Before you rinse, scrub the scalp - the scrubber from the first bath at the hospital works perfectly. If it was really thick I'd repeat that every couple days and it usually clears right up. I hope that works for you!

If your son hair is really matted down with at the top of his head it probably is craddle cap (both of my children had it) the doctor recommended using a little bit of selsum blue shampoo for a week (it will be gone in a couple of days) then using a little bit of baby oil and a soft brush so that it wouldn't come right back.

Hi T., cradle cap is just dry skin on the head, when my girls were little they both had it and I just rubbed a little baby oil on their head especially after bathing them, and it was gone in no time. Sometimes if the baby has much hair it helps to also brush it with those very soft baby hairbrushes.

My daughter had the same issue. Put baby oil on a cotton ball and saturate her scalp with it. Leave it on about and hour. Then take a wet, warm washcoth with a little baby shampoo and gently rub the scalp. The scales should slough off fairly easily. It will take more than one treatment before it clears up. You could make it part of bathtime too. Hope this helps.

If its a layer on the top of baby's head thats whitish to yellowish in color it's more than likely cradle cap. I know it can be unsightly! But never scrub or scrap their head because of the chance of taking skin with it. I find just shampooing can help. I have always been told not to over bath them this soon that it will go away on it's own. The baby oil is a good thought though.

That young...it's cradle cap. Just dry skin. Most babies go through a phase of it, he will outgrow:-)
Baby oil doesn't actually moisturize the skin, so use something like almond oil, or jojoba oil is my favorite.

Cradle cap is crusty gross stuff that cakes on baby's head. If your son's head has stuff you can pick off, then it is cradle cap. Our pediatrician said the best thing to use is dandruff shampoo for adults. If the idea really freaks you out, then you can use vegetable oil instead, it just won't work as well. Coat his head in the oil and massage it in working it through all the patches. Comb or pick off what comes easily and let it sit for 10 minutes or so... then wash it all off.

If you think he has it he probably does! It has nothing to do with how clean you keep him, so don't feel bad about it. On the other hand, if you do nothing, it won't necessarily go away on its own. My sister followed advice to leave my nephew's cradle cap alone, and it got so thick that when it eventually started peeling off (in a thick crust - yuck!) it took most of his hair with it!

I had good luck with my kids using a fine tooth comb in the bath. Rub into his scalp whatever treatment you choose (I had good luck with a brand called Gentle Naturals, from Babies R Us), then after letting it sit a bit, use the finest tooth baby comb you have at a sharp angle to your son's scalp, so it actually lifts the crust in scales from his head. Comb through repeatedly, removing as much as possible. Then shampoo once or twice if necessary - the treatment stuff is GREASY! Repeat at each bathtime until the cradle cap doesn't return, and it may take a while. I'd get it all off my daughter's scalp, only to have it return a couple weeks later. Eventually it stops coming back. But I hate how it looks, so I think it's worth treating it!

I used Aveno lavendar scented lotion. (Works MUCH better than Johnsons on a baby's dry skin as well!) The hair gets a little gloopy, but constantly moisturizing the skull make that nasty skin easier to remove during bath time. I'd apply lotion to my son's scalp throughout the day - at ever diaper change and would then just take a warm, wet wash cloth and rub the head gently at regular bath times.

I don't know if this is scientific truth, but this is what I've heard and had success with. Comb through his little head and gently get the crusty stuff off. It may be better to do it while it is wet because it can scrape off skin too. Then, you want to keep vitamin E oil on it. I know it makes his head look a bit oily, but that's okay. If you leave the crusty stuff on, it indicates to the oil glands that more oil is needed to get rid of that dry stuff. So out pumps more oil, and thus, more cradle cap. Keep it cleared out and it will start to resolve itself. Hope it helps!

My son also has cradle cap. It looks like dandruff. He is 2 months old and has had it since he was 2 weeks. His dr. suggested putting a little olive oil on his scalp and gently massaging his head then washing it. i haven't tried it since he's not fond of getting his head wet. His cradle cap is getting better (it does go away eventually) so I'm not too worried about it, but since it's dr. recommended, if you would like, go ahead and try it.

Hi T.,

My daughter had cradle cap that was pretty bad around the age of one. It was crusty and flakey and just kept coming, despite my using an ultra fine baby comb and massaging her scalp with unscented natural oil. I finally took it to my pediatricin who recommended good old-fashioned dandruff shampoo. I asked my pharmacist what he would recommend and he named Selsun Blue. I used it daily for 3-5 days and then 1x/week for 2 weeks and it worked like a charm. YOu just have to use caution with not getting it in your babe's face or eyes and be sure to rinse it off their body entirely.

This worked for us, but you should probably check it out with your Doc or pharmacist (they are often great resources, if you find a good one who knows about infant/child needs and safe products that can be used on kids) before beginning any treatment, considering your babe's young age.

Best of luck!

Hi T.,

My son had cradle cap too around that age. I was able to get rid of it with some over-the-counter cradle cap medicine, and I think it was by the brand "Gentle Naturals." It came in a blue/green bottle I think, and I'm pretty sure I saw it at Target the other day if you have a Target nearby. I just used it when I gave him a bath, and I rubbed the medicine into his scalp very gently with one of those really soft baby brushes. I only had to use it once and it went away. =)

Hi~

My son had cradle cap as an infant also.Like almost everybody else, I recommend using baby oil&leaving it on for about an hour, then removing it with a damp cloth.Maybe do this every day. Then if that doesn't do the trick(which was my case after a couple weeks of doing this)I had somebody suggest to me to try biosilk hair serum.Use it just like the baby oil. That worked great for my son!!

Then when you start to get it under control, start using a moisturizing shampoo, like Jhonson&Jhonson extra conditioning shampoo.

I did what the peds doctor told me to do; they said to take some baby oil and a soft brissle brush to their head a couple of hours before you give them a bath. So what I used to do was drench her head with baby oil, take the brush and rub it all over her head to get the skin to come off, then I would give her a bath and take a wash clothe with some milk soap and rinse off her head. Cradle cap is perfectly normal and not a bit dangerous. Some parents just ignore it and wait for it to go away (this can take a couple of years). Other parents pick at it, which can lead to slight irritation on the child's part. I had a hard time not picking at my daughter's head so I finally got rid of it once and for all. It was quite easy. I put her in the bathtub and rubbed some olive oil on her head. I waited for the oil to get warm and soak in to her scalp, maybe 15 minutes. Then I took a fine toothed comb and very gently scraped it away. A little hair came off with it but it wasn't noticeable in the end. If your child has a lot of cap, this may take a few attempts. The important thing to remember is that cradle cap is not dangerous to the child and does not need some special cream or medication to get rid of. Also, I didn't start using shampoo on my daughter's head until recently (she's 2-1/2). Simply rubbing the head gently with a washcloth and rinsing is all you need to get dirt and surface oil off. Using shampoo too early can affect the natural balance of oil production that your baby has to develop. Even now I only wash her head with shampoo (Aubrey and California Baby are two brands that get good reviews for safety) once a week. She has beautiful, clean, blond, curly locks. Good luck!

Cradle cap is usually thick and crusty in small places or even all over the head. I have found if you brush the hair gently with a many bristled brush, you can remove some of the crust. Even if it's just a little dry scalp on the head, usually a good brushing will release some of the dead skin. then if you wash the hair and moisturize the scalp it will help greatly. Be carefull when you brush, sometimes the crust is so thick, it bleeds when you remove it. If you are dilligent with brushing and moisturizing, you can usually get rid of it. You can use lotion to moisturize. Good Luck!!

Hi T.~

My son also is battling cradle cap. We've tried everything, but the one thing that seems to be working the best is olive oil! Our pediatrician suggested this method since my son has super sensitive skin. Yes, I too felt a bit strange adding a cooking product to my sons head, but was relieved when it worked. This is our routine, 5 minutes before bath time we rub about a teaspoon all over his head and let it soak. Once in the bath we brush his head with that handle little brush they give you at the hospital. Then we wash it out with Cetaphil. His head is a bit oily the next day, but nothing too horrible. We repeat this every 3 days or so.
Hope this helps!

I would put an oil on their head [massage oil, or bath oil, I used monoi miracle oil from Body Shop] and then a cotton hat on overnight or during the day. After 12 hours, I would then bathe him, and make sure to wash his hair. After a week or so of doing this every other day, it went away for my child.

Good luck. -J.

T.,

Both my children, now 4 1/2 and 1 year had cradle cap. For me it looked like a bunch of scales on the top of their heads. It doesn't bother the kids, and doesn't do any damage at all. My doctor told me that it bothers us parents more than the kids. With my son I was constantly picking/scraping it off with my nails. With my daughter her hair was too thick, and I had to leave it alone until I saw the stuff in her hair.

The advice I was given: Let it be, it's not hurting anything and really only bothers the parents, the kids are clueless.

Hope this helps,
Melissa

If your baby has what appears to be flaky darker than usual skin on his head it is definitely cradle cap. Olive oil and baby oil are the things my doctors told me to use and they worked wonders. There are small rectangular brushes that are super soft, you may have gotten one while you were in the hospital. After you let the oil sit on the head for a while or at bath time simply brush the top of his head with the soft bristles. It will take the flakes away and continuous use will keep them away.

I just looks like dry flaky skin. My pediatrician suggested head and shoulders and it worked great. You might get an extra person to hold a washcloth at the forehead to prevent any getting in his eyes. It works great though. It never came back once it was gone and I only it used while needed.

Congratulations!

OK, if your baby doesn't have cradle cap, just dry skin on his head that sluffs on and looks a little like dandruff, then you don't need any oils. When you bathe your baby, put some of the baby wash on his head, like you are washing his head, then scub it a little , very gently, with the little white soft bristled brush from the hospital. A few times of doing this should help and eventually the problem will go away.

Both my babies had dry skin on their scalp that was flaky but not cradle cap, so this advice is for you only if your baby does not have cradle cap.

Good Luck,
M.

Well, I never had to do this since my son didnt get it... I wouldnt let him get it. My son is one years old, He has had a bath everyday of this life except MAYBE 5 days (not in a row, but total). I scrubbed (still do) like i am massaging it.

I suggest to start scrubbing it.

the olive oil works well if you scrub it in a bit with a washcloth. if you are breastfeeding you can try taking 3-8mg of biotin (a B vitamin) a day. this is a much higher dose then is found in B vitamin combos so you have to purchase it on its own. it is safe to use during lactation. i have found in my baby and my patients this usually clears it up within a week!

Here's what WebMD says .... What causes cradle cap?
Cradle cap is the normal buildup of sticky skin oils, scales, and sloughed skin cells.

How is it treated?
Home treatment is usually all that is needed for cradle cap.

An hour before shampooing, rub your baby's scalp with baby oil, mineral oil, or petroleum jelly to help lift the crusts and loosen scales.
When ready to shampoo, first get the scalp wet, then gently scrub the scalp with a soft-bristle brush (a soft toothbrush works well) for a few minutes to remove the scales. You can also try gently removing the scales with a fine-tooth comb.
Then wash the scalp with baby shampoo, rinse well, and gently towel dry.

My daughter has the same problem. I could never get myself to shell out a small fortune for the tiny bottle at the store. When my pediatrician told me the real trick to getting rid of cradle cap, I was willing to try anything. She said to pour a couple teaspoons of vegetable oil (or baby oil) onto the scalp and massage well. Let sit for a couple of minutes while they play in the bath. Take a comb and gently massage backwards on the scalp for another minute and you'll see the layers start easily peeling off. Just shampoo as usual. Repeat if necessary. Trust me, this is the miracle cure. And everyone has oil at home so it's a cheap and easy fix. M.

Hi T.! Cradle cap can be a very stubborn dry skin covering
the baby's head, but it can easily be removed with some warm
(not hot) olive oil. Just put the olive oil on your son's head and then let it sit for ten minutes. Then, take a fine baby
comb and GENTLY remove the skin. After you get the "cap" off,
use RENEW lotion to keep it from coming back. The RENEW
helps heal and sooth the skin as well, and is great on baby's
bottoms to treat diaper rash.
You can find RENEW by contacting Sarah at

Cradle cap is usually when his scalp looks scaly and honestly, from what I've been told, the only way to get rid of it is good scrubbing in the bath. But what do I know? My son turned 2 in November and he still has it :/ So I'll be checking back for answers myself!

When my lil guy (now 2) had cradle cap I found that baby oil and a surgicle scrub brush help a LOT. You can ask and see if the birthing center at the hospital would give you one. Just a lil bit of baby oil the scrub, scrub, scrub gently. However the briscles are really soft of those brushes. Hope this helps.

this is basically baby dandruff.. and depending on how thick it is now will depend on how easy and long it takes to get rid of it. There are all kinds of treatments... I would wash my babys' hair and brush while nursing them or holding them..most of them it just seemed to go away on its own.. I dont' think it really hurts them or anyone else.. it just looks unsightly - I think with one kid (I have 5) I just didn't do anything..and it eventually cleared up! I found brushing just made the flakes keep coming. Hang in there... see about other suggestions and see what helps... I think each kid will respond differently to different things and it might take trial and error to see what really might help for you. I just looked at your baby's age... and it seems to me like he should outgrow this soon. I don't think my kids went much beyond that age with it. Also... the frequency of shampoos might affect it.. too much or too little.. you'll have to experiment with how much is just right for him.

good luck

just massage his head with olive oil, the flake/crust like cradle cap will loosen. Wash his head. You may need to do that repeatedly. It doesn't have to be formally diagnosed.

I tried different products for my son's cradle cap with no success. I just ended up softly washing his head with warm water and waiting it out. It'll go away eventually. My son lost all of the hair he was born with during his bout with cradle cap, but it grew back in nicely.

My daughter had cradle cap when she was an infant. I put a little bit of baby oil on it and rubbed it for a minute or two and then used a fine tooth comb and combed it right out. It worked great.

My ds had this for several months. We tried the olive oil/scrubbing thing for a long time and it didn't work. I put some Eucerin moisturizing cream on it, and it cleared up almost immediately! Good luck...

Hi T., my daughter had it pretty bad. The doctor actually told us to get head and shoulders and wash her hair/head once a day with that. Also put hydrocortazone (sp) cream on it. I tried the winnie the pooh cradle cap, you can get it at wal-mart for like $6 and you just use a littl ebit and it helped a lot. Hope this will help some!

T.,
My daughter had cradle cap when she was about the same age. It looked like dry skin that was peeling. I used Crisco - may sound- but worked like a charm. Every other night we would lather her little head up with some Crisco and let it sit for 30 mins then wash it out. The cradle cap was gone within a week.

I honestly don't know how to get rid of it, but I used a soft tooth brush and a comb to gently rub it and "scrape" it off. I also applied a bit of oil to his little noggin. Eventually it just stopped happening. I know the shelves @ stores offer some remedies but I don't pay attention since my son is now 5 1/2.
