I became certified last month through the Southlake Community Center (attached to the fire dept on Southlake Blvd). It was free and the class was actually kind of fun.
The other places I looked at cost $70-$100.
Good Luck!

Check with your local hospital for CPR classes. You could also check with the local parks and recreation centers and the local community colleges. There is usually a fee, but I call around and see what the charges are. I have also seen a commercial organization offer CPR certification at a reduced cost on Group On or Living Social in the DFW area.

When I got CPR certified I went through the local fire department. I took it for child care and since I was a center owner I took it with the local docs and often the actual fire men too.

This was very enlightening to me. I got to here actual stories they write about and do those educational videos for these type of classes.

I will never allow kiddo's to access balloons. The firemen told stories one time when we were doing the section on choke hazards and how to do abdominal thrusts.

The firemen told stories about how many kids they had worked on but still lost, They knew going in these kids wouldn't make it but they had to make the effort for the family that was looking on.

Evidently kids who get a piece of balloon in their throat can't be saved by paramedics, even if they get the kiddo's to an ER where the ER docs can perform surgery to cut their throat open they've been without oxygen too long and are gone. Kids who pop a balloon or bite it or get even the tiniest bit in their mouth can't be saved. The balloon stretches when they put the tools down their throat and they can't get through it.

So from taking CPR and First aid I learned a lot about balloons and that has changed my practices at birthday parties and other get-togethers.

You can also call some local child care centers and ask for the directors. You can ask them where they get their classes because each person who works in child care has to be certified. They will also know where the free classes are. Or they should anyway.
