Could It Be Twins Again?

Hello!

I am 25 weeks pregnant and had my first and only ultrasound so far when I was almost 11 weeks pregnant. In the ultrasound there was only one baby. I'm wondering is it's possible to still be pregnant with twins even if a ultrasound only showed one baby? I feel movement everywhere and I'm huge.I've also had extreme morning sickness. At my midwife visit a couple weeks ago (I was 23 weeks) I measured 28 weeks. I've had twins before and it feels the same. I do have two older single births. Maybe it's been so long since I've had a single baby I just can't remember what it's like.:) They never try to find two heart beats and with my first twins they couldn't till I was 7 months. I have another ultrasound because I've been constantly greater than dates. Plus I will be having a VBAC and I can only have a VBAC if there is one baby. If there are two then they will only allow me to have a c-section. I just wanted to see before I go for my second ultrasound if anyone else has had this happen.

Thank you!

What can I do next?

Of course it could be twins! Just like a boy in an ultrasound could be born a girl. 11 weeks is too early - and a baby can be "hiding" behind the other. Heartbeats can often overlap. Being huge isn't always an indicator. I was enormous with my first and they swore there had to be twins in there. I gained 60 lbs.! But only one was born so it could be either way. Have another ultrasound and really ask them to probe around and make sure there aren't two heartbeats.

My best friend has two sets of fraternal twins, so yes, it can certainly happen. At 25 weeks an ultrasound should be able to find twins.

Or you could just have a REALLY active single baby. I swore my second was practicing karate for much of my pregnancy, as she was capable of whacking my ribcage on one side and my bladder on the other simultaneously.

I think it would be pretty tough to miss a second baby at an 11 week ultrasound. I'm now pregnant with my second pregnancy, my first one was with twins 4 years ago, and I was measuring so large so quickly this time that my Dr. ordered an ultrasound at 6 weeks to see if it was twins again. It is only one baby. We had another scan this week (18 wks)to check out the anatomy and found out we are having one very wiggly healthy baby boy. In my case, I think my body had such great practice stretching out for twins that it all happened so much more quickly this time. By the way, I checked out my babies all the time on ultrasound at the veterinary hospital I worked at while I was pregnant. I actually was the first to see there were two in there at only 9 weeks, and I am not a trained ultrasonographer. There are plenty of people who worry about negative effects of ultrasounds, but I beleive they are perfectly safe and I have two healthy kids who were scanned about once a week, just because I loved peeking in on them and I could.

Take a deep breath and exhale slowly. Your uterus could be more accomodating this pregnancy due to the twins' birth 4 yrs ago, so it stretched sooner and quicker. Your doctor might want to check your blood sugar to make sure you're not gaining excessive weight as a result. It's a possibility. Ultra sounds usually catch the 2nd occupant in the uterus, but it could have hid behind a large twin, however the 2nd heartbeat should have been heard. There are possibilities, but not probabilities for twins this time around. Whatever you blessed with, they will be loved by their 4 siblings and anxious parents. Life will be good. Enjoy the calm before the arrival. Rest assured it will be okay.

The second baby can hide, but usually they catch that right away. It also depends on how good the ultrasound was and/or the tech themselves. There are other reasons why you could be measuring greater, which is why your midwife is probably ordering another ultrasound. Sometimes though if you have had a few kids (especially a pregnancy with twins) your uterus can just be more stretchy and give that baby more room too....sometimes there just is no reason. One of my friends is pregnant with only one and she is measuring close to 8 1/2 months when she is just 7.

Good luck....keep us posted on your findings!

anything is possible. i would express your concern with your care provider and remember, being firm with them for your peace of mind isn't a bad thing.
be prepared either way!

I would advise you to be weary of getting ultrasounds like it's no big deal. google some of the research re: ultrasounds and it's link with autism. A bit alarming. Everything sounds fine and I would agree about with other folks that responded.
Good luck!

Hi L. I am in the same boat as you! I had fraternal twins 14 months ago and got pregnant 7 months ago. Not what my hubby and I were anticipating. I had an ultrasound at 20 weeks and it was decided that there was one but the tech didn't spend as long looking around as I thought she should have and in the results it said that certain views were unavailable due to 'large maternal habitat'. So I am not convinced that there isn't one hiding. I have not been as sick as I was the first time around but I am as tired, of course chasing twins already could be part of that.

When I went in for my last check up 28 weeks, I measured at 35cm. Which in the grand scheme of things is 7 over what I should have been measured at. This was the first measurement though so I am trying not to worry until the next appointment and see if that difference has grown or not. If it has grown then we will assume there are two as I will not submit to another ultrasound (personal preference). We tested me for Gestational Diabetes which came back negative so that is where I stand.

I am sorry I can't help you with a definite but I can tell you that you aren't alone! shoot me an email and let me know if you want to talk having someone elses shoulder is always nice especially when they have been there done that and completely understand.
