Could It Be Twins?

My daughter in law is almost 3 months pregnant. My son told me last night that when she lays on her back, her feet and legs go numb a little. I said I thought it could be the baby laying on the nerve but with her not very far along, I am not sure. He said some of her friends said that if it is twins it could do that earlier then a single baby. She has twins all through both sides of her family (even natural quads cousins) so multipals are very possible, my son's father's sister has twins. To top things off, a couple years ago, before he even started dating my daughter in law, I had a dream of my son having twin boys which look just like him. So my question is this... have any of you had the numbness of the legs and feet when you lay down and was it twins? Could the numbness be something more serious? She has a doctors appointment on Friday and we hope they will do a ultra sound.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

They went to the doctor and he said it was too early to tell if it is twins by the heartbeat and they won't do a ultra sound until she is 18 weeks along. All is well with the pregnancy though, so that is good. My son was telling me about the doctor's visit last night and he mentioned that the doctor said the uterus was rather large for being just at 12 weeks, so it does seem that multipals are very possiple.

well, to pretty much eliminate any discussion, this can happen at any point in pregnancy because the uterus depending on its exact placement and etc etc it can put more pressure on the uterus at any time. at 3 months pregnant the uterus has already grown to the size of a grapefruit.. where just 6 weeks ago, it was only the size of a plum.. thats MORE than double in 6 weeks, not to mention the growth it made in those first 6 weeks. its bigger than people think!

so though i spose it could be twins, i wouldnt get carried away. its probably just normal from pregnancy. women who are pregnant should NOT lie on their backs because of this risk of cutting off blood supply to the uterus.
good luck

i didn't have twins, but i stopped laying on my back really early just because it wasn't comfortable, i don't recall numbness just discomfort. She should definately mention it to the Doctor but for the most past she shouldn't ever lay flat on her back. I think they can find twins through a blood test, with ultrasound to confirm.

I don't know if it is an indication of twins, but I did have trouble laying on my back. I would get light headed. I couldn't lay back in the dentists chair in later pregnancy without it bothering me. I was pregnant with twins 20 years ago, so the memories aren't that recent, but i think I had read somewhere that it is dangerous for the baby to lay on your back, it can cut off the blood supply for the baby. So I stopped sleeping on my back for that reason. Twins are a lot of fun and work. I wish her luck.

If she doesn't find anything at the doctors, or even if she does. I would suggest going to a chiropractor. They can give great prenatal relief. I even had a doctor suggest it to me when I was having some severe lower back pain with one of my pregnancy's (which was not twins).

Good luck and great happiness!

I agree with the last poster, I never ever had numbness, not even when my son was born [wish I had felt some numbness then!]...I just felt very uncomfortable laying on my back. And it is unsafe because the heavy uterus presses on the major vein that goes from your legs to your heart. I did however have plenty of pain and weakness and my legs would give out sometimes from sciatica, which apparently can cause numbness as well. It goes away once the baby is born since the weight of the baby isn't pushing on the nerve anymore...at least most of the time...sometimes it can continue if there was actual damage to a spinal disc or a herniated disc. Thank god it did go away or I would not have been able to handle it. It was a huge stressor for me, worrying whether or not I would continue to have such terrible pain and could I survive it? I'm assuming it could happen earlier with twins because there would be more weight from the babies and more water weight compressing the discs. Anyway, I would have her talk with her Doctor. It could be something else, I am just suggesting one thing that I know could cause it. She should lay on her side from now on or get a pregnancy pillow that allows her to lay on her stomach. It is a wonderful thing when the baby is finally out, and you can sleep soundly on your back again!

I am currently 15 weeks pregnant. I know I only have a singleton in me... I've already had three ultrasounds. I wake up whenever I roll on my back at night because I can no longer feel my feet and my legs are tingling. This is my third pregnancy. I didn't have it with my first that I can recall but have now with my second and this one.

So I don't think this necessarily shows anything about the number of babies she has. I assume mine is because I have a tilted uterus and the baby is always more so on my back, so I'd have this symptom before girls with a normal uterus did. I have read 1 in 8 women have a tilted uterus so it's very commom. Although, I could be completely wrong and it could be normal for standard uteruses as well. That just made sense to me.
