Could I Be Having Twins? - Puxico,MO

Obviously I wont know for sure until I get an ultrasound done but I'm very curious about some things that seem to point in the 'twin' direction... I know that a belly in the first 2 or 3 months is just gas & bloat, and not actually baby, but I have already gained 3+ lbs and I'm only at 5 1/2 weeks! My weight has been steady for the past 2 years, now all of a sudden I'm up 3lbs!? I have been eating like crazy for the past 2-3 weeks- I've been insatiably hungry since I conceived. I have been doing VERY well in making sure that I'm eating very healthy, so I shouldn't be packing on the pounds, right? Fruits, veggies and fat-free ice cream can't make someone blow up... right? I do have twins in my family- my paternal grandmother is a twin. And I know that the twin gene tends to skip a generation. My fiance keeps joking that he thinks it's twins, because he has twin siblings, and maybe that's all it is, but ever since conception I've been having 'twin' dreams. That NEVER happened with my first pregnancy- I had a healthy baby boy, no twins. And I never even considered that I could be having twins. Now, with this belly (it looks like I'm 3 months along), the dreams, the cravings, the PAIN in my boobs (OMG they feel like bowling balls attached to my chest with fishhooks ), and the nausea (not to mention, I. am. exhausted. 24/7), plus I am always so dizzy... I think there's definitely a chance that I could be expecting double trouble. Even if not, it's fun to think about. Feel free to leave your comments or thoughts on the subject :)

Statistically I think there is about a 3% chance. Also, the genetic twin thing usually comes from your mother via a gene for hyperovulation.

Another also...it is common to increase in size much more quickly with subsequent pregnancies.

The "twin gene" is actually passed from the mother and her mother, grandmother, etc. It's hyperovulation (the release of multiple eggs during ovulation) which produces fraternal twins (identical twins are just a random thing). The dad's genes don't actually have any effect on whether or not you have twins.

I had my twins from my 2nd pregnancy and growing up, I always though I'd have boy/girl twins for some reason and I did! With my twin pregnancy, I was way more nauseous and tired than my 1st pregnancy. When I was about 3 months, I was measuring at the 6 month size.

Good luck, let us know what the ultrasound shows! :)

I thought I was having twins this time around too!! But I'm not. Weight gain (early in pregnancy, and lots of it) is completely normal - even if you only have one in there! :) Your body is storing lots of fluid in your blood & breasts which would account for the weight gain, even if you're eating healthy. Congratulations!

are you sure you aren't further along than you thought? as far as foods... too much pf ANYTHING can cause you to gain weight, and extra weight gain could also be to increased blood volume and holding water... make sure you are drinking plenty H2O so you don't get dehydrated!

of course, any pregnancy COULD be a twin pregnancy. The family history matters more if there are fraternal twins in your family than it does identical from what I have heard...

Also, showing earlier, feeling movement and having different symptoms earlier is common in second pregnancies. It is my non-professional opinion that it is because your body alrewady knows "what to do" having done this all before... oh and being a little more stretched out from already carrying a baby. With my second baby, I showed earlier and had wickedly bad morning sickness that started off worse and lasted longer, I swore it was twins or a boy or something... but now, just another girl. Also, I didn't even make it halfway through pregnancy the second time before my boob started leaking... Don't get your hopes up for twins, just see what they say when you get the ultrasound!

Congrats in advance!

My twin pregnancy was no different from my others in terms of weight gain, belly size etc until the last few months. If this is your second, it could just be that after your first pregnancy, your body goes back into pregnancy mode a lot earlier so you usually gain faster and earlier, show earlier, etc.

The gene for twins only runs on the female side of the family so your grandmother being a twin could mean something but your fiance's twin siblings would have nothing to do with anything. Congratulations either way - hopefully if you're really feeling different your OB can squeeze you in for a quick u/s so that you know for sure. My twin pregnancy was confirmed at 5 weeks, about 10 days after the positive pregnancy test, so they can tell pretty early on.

If twins run in your family, you could definitely be expecting them, or if fertility drugs were used. Otherwise, it's not too common. I am a small frame person and considered petite. I gained weight fast with both pregnancies and when I found out I was pregnant with my 1st baby, I was thinking that if I WASN'T prego, then I had to buy more pants because of a 3-5 lb. weight gain. I gained just over 30 lbs. with both babies and the majority of mine was in the 1st 20 weeks. Thankgoodness it leveled off but I definitely watched what I was eating and tried to do lots of fruits and veges to help. All weight was lost since babies were 8 lbs. + and there's no slowing down with a toddler.

I think we make ourselves believe what we want to be true. All your symptoms could be consistent with any pregnancy, really.

But, that said, PLEASE PLEASE do let us know after you get your ultrasound!! Twins would be SO exciting!! I've always wanted twins.

I had twins at 28. By 7 weeks I was not able to button my jeans. Crazy. When I went to the dr. at 8 weeks, the doctor said - you measure right on target for 12 weeks. When he realized I was only 8, he sent me immediately for a sonogram. I think they might have been interested in your measurements if they were concerned about twins.

I didn't gain weight with my twins until 20 weeks, so I don't know if weight gain has anything to do with it. But I remember constantly fearing being told I was having twins before I went in for my ultrasound. For some reason, all I could think about was having twins. I didn't feel that way with my first. So there could be something to your feelings.

im 22 weeks and im huge.. from the beginning iv had to hear jokes from family saying omg u sure ur not having twins.. even after my first ultrasound at 12 weeks when i had a clear picture of one baby i would get the comment u sure there isnt another one in there that they missed... im 22 weeks and im bigger than my cousins wife who is 10 weeks further along than i am.. iv gained a good amount of weight but not an insanely huge amount, i asked my doc if mayb my belly sticks out so far beause im so short (im only 5foot) and she said well its not just that youre very short its that u have a very short torso even considering ur height so the baby and all your organs dont have anyother room to go but out its not like people who have very long torso stuff can move up wiht me it all goes out.. i wouldnt convince yourself its twins until u get your ultrasound done.. i mean its possible youre having twins but u could just be gaining more weight this time around.. all pregnancies are different

I was pretty sure I was pregnant with twins this time too... my husband is a twin, my great grandmother is a twin, my sister has twins, I have twin aunts, my husband has two sets of twin cousins... to say "it runs in the family" is an understatement. At my first prenatal appointment my doctor told me that I was measuring "big" (see one of my previous questions).

The only way to tell if you are having twins is to have the ultrasound. Even then... you may not see them until the 18-20 week ultrasound! My sister didn't know she was having twins until then... they were so tiny and "one behind the other" that the first ultrasound didn't detect two babies.

If this is your second or subsequent pregnancy, it's really common to "show early" and then level out. I showed much earlier this time- one baby girl- and ended up putting on less weight in the end and am carrying her entirely differently than with my son. I was in maternity pants (happily) by 4 months. I thought it was just me, but the ladies here reassured me that it's pretty typical after the first one.

I was pretty convinced we were having twins too for many of the same reasons you have listed! Good luck with the pregnancy and I hope you have a healthy beautiful baby (or two) in the near future! Congratulations.

I am 36 in my 3'rd pregnancy and found out it was twins at 8 weeks or so. I can't say I was any bigger but man I can identify with the boobie pain. I had been lucky not to have that with my first 2 boys so when it happened I was like what the....also I got really dizzy for a few weeks which was different for me. Can't say I had more or less cravings than the first 2 but for sure more weight but that didn't really materialize until 2'nd trimester. Most of all and this is was the weirdest I took the home test and told my 3 yr old son that mommy has a baby in her belly we can't rough house or play horsey and he said no... 2 babies.. sure enough 6 weeks later at the OB we saw the little guys ...super weird so my advice would be to ask your little boy what's up! - Good Luck anxious to know what happens!!

I just delivered mt second baby girl 1 month ago and when I was newly pregnant with her I FREAKED thinking that I was expecting twins. I actually cried one day to myself because I was so convinced. I am truly facinated by twins and always thought that it would be awesome to have them but when I became pregnant with my first I realized that I was very very happy that there was only one in there and when I had her and saw and lived first hand what it is like to care for one I was even happier. So when I thought I was expecting two at once I was scared. I too had all the same symptoms as you and I have them in my family but there was only one and I am so grateful for my little nugget =)
I wish you all the best and I hope you get your twins if thats what you are happy with and wanting and if there is just one Im sure you will be just as happy as well
Congrats
