Cough*cough*cough

My 3 year old daughter has had a loose, productive cough for about a week now. She has no congestion associated with it, but at night I can hear what seems to be post nasal drip. No fever is present at all, she's not lethargic, good appetite. Other than the pesky cough, she is acting completely normal. When I called her doctor Monday, they recommended giving her Claritin in the morning and Delsym to help her sleep at night. However, they discouraged me from bringing her in because of an excessive number of flu cases they are seeing in the office. I do think it's gotten better-definitely worse in the mornings. We run a vaporizer at night. Does this sound like allergies? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

What can I do next?

My 5 yr old daughter gets a cough this time of year - every year. I think in part because she is in school and the air is so dry. And part from allergies. I give her singular in the morning and zyrtec at night. No more cough. This was recommended last year to us by her dr to stop the constant cough. I also try to elevate her pillow/bed a little to help any nasal drip she has. We us a humdifier also, but a warm mist. They produce less molds using them. I also wash all her bedding once a week in hot water.

I started using the environmental friendly soaps and fabric softer for washing cloths. This has helped us a lot.

Yup. I'd take her to an allergist to have her tested.

Btw, humidifiers grow mold and mildew IN them and also in the room. (drapes, bedding, carpet, drywall, etc) As someone who's dealt with severe allergies for 25 years, I'd highly recommend not using one.

Good luck!

Hi M.,

I have 2 children that were croupy one day. I tried the following and the next day croup was gone. I was absolutely amazed at the results and I used Vick's Baby Rub.

VICKS VAPOR RUB

During a lecture on Essential Oils, they told us how the foot soles can absorb oils. Their example: Put garlic on your feet and within 20 minutes you can 'taste' it.

Some of us have used Vicks Vapo rub for years for everything from chapped lips to sore toes and many body parts in between. But I've never heard of this. And don't laugh, it works 100% of the time, although the scientists who discovered it aren't sure why. To stop night time coughing in a child (or adult as we found out personally), put Vicks Vapo rub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime, then cover with socks. Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly.

Just happened to tune in A.M. Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good, due to the chemical makeup of these strong drugs so, I listened. It was a surprise finding and found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, in addition to have a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly.

My wife tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%! She said that it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a few minutes and believe me, this was a deep, ( incredibly annoying!) every few seconds uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough-free for hours every night that she used it.

If you have grandchildren, pass this on. If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed at how it works

DON'T SHUN THIS ONE.. TRY IT THE NEXT TIME YOU GET A BAD COLD.

Like I said, it was awesome to see how this worked! Hope it helps!

Best wishes!
T.

HI M.,

This definitely sounds like when we first discovered our son had allergies. The big difference between allergies and something else is the color or the phlem. If it is clear - allergies. If it is green, yellow, etc., this is probably something else. All of the dripping down the throat causes the cough, especially when they lay down. It can also cause a raw, sore throat. when all of that "junk" sits there in her throat overnight, mornings can be kind of gross. If the Claritin isn't working, try Zyrtec. It's a little stronger and worked really well for us. Our son is now 14 and we finally saw an allergist and completed testing. Some children will grow out of their allergies by puberty, some will not. If the medicines do not help, eventually I would get her tested, but if it works, just wait and see. I do agree with your doctor about coming to the office. It's obvious she does not have the flu and I wouldn't want to expose her to that. Try the allery route at home, first. Good luck! L.

it does sound like allergies. Since other symptons are not there, I wouldnt worry. Is she on a good childs vitamin? That can really help the health process. If she starts to run a fever, or anything else changes, ignore your doctor and take her to a walk-in. Good luck and God Bless.

Same thing in our house. My 3 yr old, 9 month old and I allhave cough/cold for about a month. I did the deslym with her at night, but did not want to over do it. So I let it got for about a month and took them in to the MD (in the past they have said not to bring in unless the cold is over 3 weeks). So he prescribed her an antibiotic, saying it was probably something with her sinuses. She has improved dramatically since. You may want to take your child in a week. Colds/coughs "usually" run their couse b/t 7-10 days.

Hi M.,

It does sound like "allergies." I going to step out and say something no one else has said and that is that allergies can be prevented. No one should be allergic to anything that occurs naturally unless their immune system is low and can't fight off the irritant. We should only have reactions to synthetic things....The thing to do is work on building her immune system. Allergy meds do treat the symptoms but they also weaken the immune system so as time goes by your allergy sufferer will need stronger and stronger meds to combat these issues.

I'm saying this because I know from personal experience after a lot of research. I was a VERY sickly kid with multiple allergies and once I figured out all the torture I went through as a child could have been prevented I was mortified that no one had ever told me or my mom. Let me know if you want more information. I'm an open book and would be happy to talk if you like. It's not difficult and it's not expensive and it sure does make life easier when your kids are healthy.

God bless,

M.

Totally sounds like allergies. Ragweed is really high this time of year.

We did claitin in the am & benadril at night - pretty effective. The claritin will take a week or two to build up the histimins in her system, so be patient for results.

If you are wary of giving somany OTC meds this year we tried Nettle tea with Local Honey. Any honey produced in your area. we have had great success with this & have only needed benadril a few times at night. I make a big batxh & keep it in the fridge so it is easy to remember & give.

HAng in there! Best to keep away from the Dr's office so as not to get really sick!

Sounds like a cold to me.....my entire house has been riddled with this virus for 2 weeks now. Today actually makes 2 weeks for me. I was told that there is a cold going around that lingers for a while...and we are proof of that. Coughing, post nasal....exactly what we have. I would sit tight. Much more dangerous to take her into a flu infested Dr. office right now.

It doesn't sound like anything to be terribly concerned about. If it continues for another week, with treatment or gets worse, then schedule an appt. Could just be a little cold settling into her chest. Does she take a vitamin daily? Or drink OJ?? May try to squeeze those in for the Vit C. Hope she gets better soon, but don't be afraid to insist on an appt if you feel it's necessary. Doctors are still humans.....take care!
