I've been coughing for over 3 weeks now. a very dry, frequent cough. Any suggestions for cough meds that work? Robitussin used to do it for me but I feel like its not as effective anymore... Thanks!

What can I do next?

I asked my doctor the same question, and he said that there is no cough medicine that works. He said that honey is better than any over-the-counter drug--especially dissolved in hot water.

Whenever I get a cough like that, I ask my doctor for a prescription. Cough syrup with codeine works like a charm.

I would use guiafenisen(used to be plain old Robitussin) and drink alot of fluids along with using pectin based cough drops(halls breezers, The apple cider flavored cough drops at Walgreens). Sounds like you have residual stuff trying to clear it's way from your sinuses and adding fluids warm and cool with the cough(even Mucinex) loosens and help it all flow out. Take vitamins while your sick to help your body boost it's immune system. If it all doesn't clear in the next week or 2 or you are blowing green mucus, have a fever then head into the doctor for an antibiotic. Also use a humidifier as we are heading into a dry air season and you may need a little extra moisture.

Try honey and lemon. My son (in his 30's) was very sick last month, and even the Rx cough medicine wasn't cutting it. I told him to try it and he called a few days later to say thanks, it worked.

I always had a cough off and on for years. This summer I found out I have acid reflux.. no cough medicine helps..

Make sure if this cough does not go away in a few weeks, you get checked by your doctor.

I suffered too long like many moms.. In denial thinking it was allergies, sinus.. I now realize it was foolish to put up with it. It actually has now affected my heart.

So mark it on your calendar today how long you have had it and what you have been using so you can let the Dr. know if needed.

Have you ever tried a spoon full of honey? I've been giving it to my daughter for her cough for the past few weeks and I've been amazed at how well it works.
Good luck!

Our doc told us that if we wanted to stop a cough then the only thing that really worked was a prescription that...sort of... paralyzed the cough impulse/throat muscles. Something like those Teslov Pearls(?)

None of the OTC stuff has actually ever been scientifically proven to stop a cough, they may moisten the throat so that it's not so scratchy but as for stopping a cough there is really nothing OTC. I recommend going to the doc and getting a prescription if the coughing has reached the point of being so uncomfortable.

For a dry issue make sure you have some humidity in the house, it can be a simmering stock pot on the stove, a humidifier, a steamy shower a couple of times per day, anything that will get moisture into the lungs. I use the Tussin, plain Tussin, it is an Expectorant. That means it helps get moisture in the lungs so coughing up the goo will be easier. If it's too dry it just spiderwebs from lAlveoli to bronchi and such. It is impossible to get it up if it's dried up.

raw honey or benedryl/ allergy meds.
None of us use actual cough meds when we get a cold... we go straight to the allergy meds. It clears up the sinus' and helps with the cough.

I hope you start to feel better soon

I would get it checked out cause I had the same issue and was in the same boat as Laurie A it was reflex and I had no clue. I never new it could cause a cough and ended up my dad had it for years and didn't know it.

Good luck and God Bless!

Try Mucinex. It's the most effective thing I've tried.

I have to vote for Delysum too. It's the only thing that works for me and it truly works for 12 hours!

In those situations I find I always have to have a cough drop in addition to the cough syrup. Maybe you're coughing is due to allergies? Maybe an allergy med would help??
