Slather Vick's vaporub on the soles of his feet and then put socks on over them. Put him to bed.

It is an "old wive's tale", yes. But it has worked many times for my kids. The theory is that the menthol in the vick's triggers the nerves in the feet to send signals to the brain (hey! there's menthol down here!--lol, who knows), which distracts the brain (overrides the signals) from the signals it is receiving saying to cough.

Zarbee's nightime cough syrup worked wonders for my 6 yo DS last fall when he had a dry, hacking cough so bad that it would make him throw up. It is a natural cough syrup with dark honeys and .5 mg of melatonin for sleepiness to help them rest through the night. He had been sick for three weeks when i found that and after several nights of taking it, he got better. I assume because he was able to rest and recover.

Good luck...

So I just went through this- so am and will now always be, very cautious....my 3 yr old has a fever and runny nose for a few days, then it broke and then fever and cough came a couple days later...took her in and chest X-ray later I find out she has pneumonia.

Supposedly it's how it starts...a fever/cold and then a cough...

All of the ideas on cool mist humidifier and vicks on soles of feet, and I'd also suction (if he can't blow his nose well) if there's still stuff in his nose.

In addition though, I'd take him in just as a precaution to have the doctor listen to him. Its going around I'm finding out and so much better to find it early. I took my daughter to the walkin clinic that our hospital has- its awesome and was great because they have all the X-ray machines and things right there

Good luck and hope he gets better quick!

It may help to run a humidifier in his room. Often winter coughs are caused by dry air caused by heating our houses.

Please don't wait for advice on a board like this -- get your child to the doctor. Just this morning I saw a news report that whooping cough (which can become serious) is making a big comeback in the US right now. And as someone else posted, pneumonia can get going if you leave things too long. Get to the doctor today.

You may think there's no congestion but a doctor can detect congestion that we don't hear or see as a runny nose etc.

Also do get a cool mist (not hot mist!) humidifier for the bedroom.

my daughter was the same way and she has asthma try a humidifier and mix a tablespoon of honey with a teaspoon of cinnamon and give once in the morn and once in the evening.
