My 6 year old has a cough. My kids are prone to coughs that linger with a cold or allergies. I have tricks and things that help but nothing is helping my little guy. Cough meds never help my kids. He's only been coughing for 2 days and I know it's because he's congested but nothing is helping. Any secrets you have that help your kids that you don't mind sharing would be awesome! Thanks!

Jaimee,
I have 2 kids that have had asthma most of their lives. The only time it ever becomes a problem is when they get sick. I found that with my 4 year old (who has it worse) that a humidifier works wonders. I run it every night, even if she doesn't have a cold. It seems to help. It is just soooooo dry here! (We have been using a humidifier for at least 3 years.) It also provides her with a "white noise" that seems to help her sleep. When they are sick or congested, I get the Baby Vapor Bath and give them a bath with that. I also use the plug-in vapor strips.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like it's time for a trip to the doctor. My son just got over Croup (barking sound that sounds like a seal), and the other mom below had a child with Strep.

No telling what it is, but it's that time of season when there's gunk everywhere.

Hope he feels better soon!

A humidifier or vaporizer & Vicks on the chest, back, and bottoms of their feet work wonders. I would say if it's an ongoing thing though, you may want to talk to your doctor about breathing treatments, which also help tremendously. Good luck!

I use vicks vapor rub on my kids back and chest. I also give them an extra pillow at night, to prop them up more. I also use the waterless vaporizors in their rooms. You can get these at any drug store or the pharmacy section of the grocery store. They are a little device that you plug into the wall, they have a vapor pad that you insert into it and the device heats up, letting the vapor fill the room.

When my son had a cough that NOTHING (I tried everything) helped to suppress, it was walking pneumonia. He had been on antibiotics for "strep" for ten days. No runny nose, no temp. All of a sudden, a cough that would not suppress at all. Took him to the doc next day and it was walking pneumonia.

It it does not improve, be safe and take your child in to be safe.

Stay away from dairy till the cough stops, I would use the ocean spray /saline squezze bottle in his nose so her can keep moving the crud out of his nose.
Water water water and vit c, fruits etc, warm humidifier at night, not the cold mist.

Good luck ~

Definately go to the doctor and if they say it's just a virus, ask for a chest x-ray. Both my older daughters have allergy-induced asthma, constant coughing sounds like asthma. I hate to use cough medicine so I read an article about honey being just as affective as cough surup....give him a spoon full of honey to help ease the coughing. Also, put a cold-mist humidifier in his room. If it's the middle of the night and nothing helps, go into a bathroom that has a door you can shut, turn the shower on as hot as it will go and sit with him in the bathroom, the steam of the shower will open up his lungs. My kids have also gotten croup, it's a cough that sounds like a seal barking, it can be pretty serious. Just go to the doctor and insist that you want a thorough check-up. Good luck and God Bless!
