Control Issue vs UTI

You are probably right :) I would maybe have him checked just to be sure, but it is unusual for little boys to have UTIs and it is VERY common for kids to go through this stage.

I swear all six of my kids drove me to insanity with this phase. For some reason, there deal was even if we had JUST went potty at home, as soon as we got somewhere, the first thing they HAD to do was use the bathroom. It was like new bathrooms has some magical hold over them. If he is fully potty trained, you can say no, you just went potty 5 minutes ago, your big boy bladder can hold it until morning. I think the one thing you do want to watch is the control issue - it can get out of control pretty quick at this age.

If the dr. clears him I would go back to the timer system you probably used when you were training him. After a week or two, he will forget about using it as a control thing and move on to something else . . . like food, dressing himself, etc. etc. :)

How long ago was he potty trained? If it was fairly recent, this may ALSO be his way of letting everyone know that "he is in control" and CAN do it whether he just stands there or actually GOES. If he DOES go, more often than not, then you may want him checked out by his pediatrician. Frequent urination is also a sign of diabetes.

If he's not going most of the time he says he has to, I think it might just be his way of stating his independence. Did he get rewarded while potty training? If so, and it was recent, maybe he still feels the need for a reward for "knowing he has to go", whether he does or not.

I had this same problem with my 5 year old. I think it started when his brother was potty training. He became overly aware of his peeing. It became very disruptive to our lives. One day at the zoo all we saw was bathrooms. Usually the same one over and over again. Bedtime was crazy. I had him tested for infection twice. Many calls to the doctor. I would take him in to get tested just to make sure. In my sons what finally worked was the doctor telling him he wasn't allowed to go pee more once an hour. He would be in agony waiting for that time to pass. Finally he retrained his bladder to hold it. At three years old I imagine this might be more difficult to do, but it was the only answer.

only way to know is if you take him to the doc and have his urine cultured. Some kids have no symptoms besides the frequent urination. Don't wait to get him checked and ruled out....untreated UTI can lead to bladder or kidney infection that can be serious. best of luck!

If he is thirsty too it could be a sign of diabetes. There are also kids that have sensory issues where they may not recognize the signals for going to the bathroom. Maybe he is confused by the signals. I would talk to your doctor

Yep. Very common at this age. He has figured out that if he says he needs to go potty, that he doesn't have to stay in bed. Or get into bed yet. Or .. or... or...

It will pass. Just hang in there.. and try not to give him too much attention when he does this. My daughter would did this around 2 1/2 and it was very frustrating. She'd pop back up out of bed every 5 minutes... Eventually, I stopped going into the bathroom with her.. and would just let her go and go back to bed. I would go the first one or 2 times, then tell her... if you have to get up to potty again, I won't be coming back to tuck you into bed again. This is the last one.

Have him checked for diabetes. That is also one of the q's. Does he complain of being hungry allot lately. Another q. Hands and feet tingle, Thristy allot another sign. That's how I found out I have it. Sores slow on healing?

I bet it's a control thing. If he doesn't have a sore bladder or tummy, then it's most likely just that he knows he can put off bedtime just a little longer. If he were doing it all day, then I'd say have him checked. UTI symptoms don't just show up at a certain time of day. I don't know how you stop that kind of behavior, since you want him to go to the potty. Good luck!

When he pees is it full stream or a tinkle any other pattern changes in peeing.I wouldn't blow it off I would just monitor him he is feeling independent this is a great age for it and they are noticing alot of it everday my daughter is now wanting to get all her own drinks she doesn't want any help with the bathroom or bathing gettting dressed or doing much for her except tying her shoes.If these fall into place with your tot encourage him but also set limits.It doesn't hurt to make a phone call to the dr officve you can visit with the nurse over the phone if needed he may need to go in and do a test to rule out UTI

I've only had a couple UTIs that I can remember. Neither came with any other symptom, no pain, no bloating, no fever, nothing. I just had to pee every 10-15 minutes. I ended up sitting in the bath at 6am just waiting until I could go to immediate care when it opened.
I'd have it looked at. They can give him a pill that suppresses that urge while the antibiotics take about 24 hours to kick in. If it isn't a UTI, then you know you can limit the times he's allowed to get up. My son is allowed to get up 3 times after bedtime, then we lock his door and put a potty in his room in case he actually has to go.
