Constipation in Older Children

My daughter is 8 years old. She has just recently suffered from constipation. I've never had to deal with this so it was a huge eye opener for me. A little background... my daughter was complaining of a tummy ache for about a week. I basically started her on a bland diet hoping that would take care of it. Just thought maybe she had a little tummy bug (which is going around like wild fire). We ended up going to the Dr on a Sunday morning and they said she is constipated and to give her some MiraLax daily. Well 2 days later she was still in pain. Called her regular Dr and they took x-rays. They told us that she had stool in her bowels - doesn't that mean she constipated? Anyways... we did what they called a clean out. All went well. Called Dr a few days later to give update and they want me to follow a strict diet of no dairy, bland foods and LOTS of water. Ok.... been doing that and she is still having tummy problems.

I'm wondering if anyone has dealt with this and how long this lasts????

I'm surprised they said that.
It could be the bland foods that is creating the constipation.
Bland foods, tends to be "binding."

As a Toddler, my daughter had constipation.
We saw a Pediatric Gastroenterologist.
He never recommended "bland" foods for her nor Miralax.
And, it took time... for my daughter's system to normalize.
I am talking, weeks.

I highly recommend, you see a Pediatric Gastroenterologist.
TO get proper care and diagnosis for your daughter.

Miralax is mild enough to use in children, but you should be careful with it. I had Hyperemesis Gravidarum when I was pregnant and the only thing that stopped the sickness was Zofran- which came with the side effect of constipation. Not normal constipation either. I was admitted to the hospital 3 times during the pregnancy for bowel obstructions. The pain was unimaginable, and I had to stay there until I ...relieved myself.

One thing that they did for me once things would kind of start moving again was give me lots of yogurt. Activia has the highest amounts of probiotics and it's very tastey too. That will put the good bacteria back in her tummy and help her stomach and bowels to do what they're supposed to do. I said be careful with Miralax because like with any laxative agent, your body can get dependent on it and basically your intestines like any muscle, atrophy and you can't poop unless you use the meds. That's a bad place to be in too. But that's far away from where she is now.

Sounds like her diet isn't working for her right now. She could have some undiscovered food allergy that's causing stomach problems or digestion upset. I second the person who said perhaps she should see a pediatric gastroenterologist.

Other things that worked for me when I was in a bad bad place were:

Broccoli, Mini Wheats cereal, Cheerios cereal, hot oatmeal, nuts, hot or warm drinks like tea or coffee (I know she's a kiddo, but apple cider works great too).

Good luck mama and don't stop asking questions until they help her!

If I'm hearing you right, the doctor said to give bland foods. But when kids have diarrhea, they say to give bland foods. Isn't your daughter having the opposite problem?

It seems to me that she should/could be eating just about anything that isn't binding. She may also have a problem with gluten. (I found out when I was 33 that I did. My primary symptom? Constipation.)

In any case, fruits and veggies would be great. Healing drinks, like chicken broth, would be great. Gelatin (especially organic gelatin) would be tasty and healing. Yogurt has probiotics, but the best place to get probiotics from is fermented food... sauerkraut, pickles, olives, kim chi, pickled ginger or garlic, etc.

And it could take a few weeks for her muscles to get back to the way they were, but if you're following the above diet for her, she should feel better in a few days.

these things can last for a while. fruits and veggies make you go.. pears peaches and prunes are really good also veggies of any sort..

water and fruit juice..

once tummies are sore.. it can take a week or so to settle down.

I wish I could find the link for this constipation smoothie but it is basically: some pineapple, ice, 1/2 c prune juice, 5 strawberries, 1 orange, 1 apple and optional 1/2 c oatmeal. U can modify a bit to her taste, such as put some oj if needed. It works, makes about 3 servings. In general, I don't think bland works, more fruit, veg and water.

This happened to me a few wks ago.

I confided in a friend from India who uses natural remedies for everything.

I listened...I warmed 2/3 cup of water in a pan. I poured it in a coffee mug. I drank it all over a 5 minute period.

It worked.

I take good quailty probiotic, too. I only consume organic yogurts.

I do not overdo bananas and the organic rice I love, otherwise, I do get constipated.
