I have an almost 10-month-old son and I believe he is constipated. He hasn't gone no. 2 much lately and yesterday he pushed and groaned and got so red in the face for about 30 mins. and when I changed his diaper there was a small rock hard poop. He than started to poop some more (please don't read on any futher if you don't want the details) and I literally had to pull the rest of it out and it was so many hard poops stuck together. I thought after that he would be fine but today he pushed and groaned somemore and had a small amount of poop. I believe my sons doctor before said to give him kyro (sp?) syrup (1 tps.) in a bottle. Is this correct? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

HI, My daughter is almost 2 and has suffered from constipation for a year. I have to give her alittle prune juice every day to keep her regular. It works. I mix it with alittle apple juice and water. I've gone through the pulling it out and it is not pleasant.

From my experience, karo syrup definitely does the trick. I have also heard people try brown sugar and water in a bottle, prune juice, or grapes ( which he is too young for). I hope he feels better.

We had to do that with my son at about the same age...for the same reason. We also made sure he drank more juice...pear juice. I'm not sure if it matters what kind of juice, but his doctor recomended using it. Good Luck. I'm sure your little one will be fine.

M.,

You can use the kyro, but you can also use any fruit that begins with a P. Peaches, Pears, Plums, Purns and so on. I had the same problem with my son when he hit that age. He is now one and every once in a while I have to give him some pear juice to help him out. The juice will help too if he likes it my son doesn't so i have to sneak it in. If he is on adult food oatmeal helps my son as well. I hope this works and good luck, i know it is hard to watch them struggle.

Oh my God. I went throught the same thing with my, now, 3 year old. It's stressful and terrifying isn't it? The good news is you will get through it somehow. Karo syrup did help us too, and now he's fairly regular... Now if we could just get him to use the potty:) Good luck.

From what you describe he is constipated.. some people will say use karo syrup, but that has a lot of sugars in it which isnt good for babies. Other say enemas.. but that is painful for the baby.. and not fun (from experience). Some also say to use prunes, or prune juice.. but for my son, that doesnt work. I was told about a product by a friend that I have been using now for some time, and it works GREAT! It is called Little Tummys Laxative Drops. It is all natural vegetables.. and wont harm any baby at all.. You can get it in any grocery store... It is chocalate flavored... not that it matters... but you just use the dropper and put it right in his mouth.. it still takes about 6 hours for it to work.. but trust me.. it works!

Hi M., My name is D. I have 2 girls 8+3. When my oldest was about the same age as your son I had to do the same thing.I thought I was the only one who ever did that, I actually used the tip of the thermometer and pulled out a big hard log. Gross I know but we will do anything for our kids. Any ways I would always try to help her when she got constipated by pushing up her legs to her stomach. If that didnt work I would buy a jar of baby prune food and mix it in her cereal in the morning. She actually loved it and her belley problems seem to vanish. U can also try apple juice he is old enough for all of those and good luck ok.

M.,
My parents used to have Karo Syrup in the house just for that reason! Then again, us six kids really liked the taste of it. :) Anyway, I never used Karo Syrup for my kids. My daughter was the one who had the constipation problems. Her doctor told me to buy this suppository for her; its gel-like sticks (very thin) and I can't remember the name of it, but I had picked it up at Walgreens. The suppositories worked REALLY well.
So, my advice (suggestion) to you is to call your pediatrician's office and speak w/a nurse. Ask the nurse about what products you can use (that are safe for your son) to help relieve his constipation. Please let us know what you used and how it worked out. :)

I feel your pain. Here are a few ideas:
1. I tried the kyro syrup and it worked like a charm.
2. Prunes/prune juice helps too. Sometimes works too well, but you will be grateful when that happens.
3. In addition to fruit, I found giving my daughter more liquids helped too. I made sure she had whatever formula/milk she needed for the day, but then I also supplemented watered down juice (especially prune juice) throughout the day really helped. My pediatrician recommends no more than 4 - 6 oz of juice per day, so I mixed very little juice with lots of water to keep her well hydrated.
4. When your child is struggling to 'get one out', rather than having to 'pull it out' (which my husband and I had to do one day), try sticking your son in a warm tub. Give him a 5 - 15 minutes in a little warm water and I pretty much guarantee he will probably poop right in the tub. Then just pluck him right out and clean up the mess. Not pretty, but has worked for me a few times when my daugther was really struggling to go #2.

This really works... within a half hour or so for my son...
Get a tomato... you can use a cherry tomato or do a big one and freeze the rest in little ice cubes for later.
Boil some water, drop the tomato in. Wait until it starts to wrinkle- just enough to get the skin off. Take the skin off. Use a mesh colander or strainer or cheesecloth and strain the juice from the tomato out into a cup. Give kiddo a 1/2tbsp to a tablespoon of the juice. You can hide it in his juice as well.
Freeze the rest in tablespoon servings and let it defrost for later. I have eaten the leftover tomato part but you can do what you want with it.

I have an 8 month old and I just went through this! :) I fed my lil one some prunes and *poof* that really helped alot. I had put a request out there for advice on the issue as well and got tons of feedback. Are you feeding him bananas? I was told that those actually constipate babies. Also, if you feed him peaches & pears that seems to really work as well! Good luck! :)

Prune juice and 7-up or sprite is a mixture my son was willing to drink to solve his constipation problem. It's easier than glycerine suppositories but you may want to keep some of those at home just in case.
Good luck and take care

My 10 month old daughter has had similar problems. Her pedi told us to try things like prunes or undiluted prune juice. Also to limited foods like bananas and carrots. This has worked great for us. Hope this helps.

I have a 13 month old who has had the same problem off and on since birth. One of my drs said no to the Kyro syrup (Idon't know how to spell it either), but another dr said yes. I was also told to do brown sugar and water. Neither of those really worked for him. My fail safe way to always help him is prunes. He won't drink prune juice, but I can mix it in his oatmeal in the morning and it works every time. Gerber makes them or you can make your own. I just microwave 7 prunes (that is one serving) with a little water in a covered dish and puree them.

I hope that helps.

you can try apple juice or raisins.. yes the Karo syrup works, I used 1 Tablespoon to 2 ounces. You can lay him on his back and massage his belly in a downward motion.. you can bend his legs up into his belly and hold for a few seconds and keep doing that.. bicycling his legs slowly may help too. Lots of water to drink too.

It's awful when that happens to them! I remember this being very common with my daughter when she was his age. I found prune juice did the trick for her. I never tried the Kyro syrup but after reading all the responses I will remember that for the future! I diluted the prune juice with a little water just to see how it worked, since I didn't want the opposite effect! Good luck!

I have had this problem with my daughter now 21 months since she was around 1. The pedi has me give her 1/2 cap of prescribed glycolax in juice daily. This does the trick. Not sure why she gets constipated but if I skip a dose she struggles to go. I guess its puts more water in the stool to soften it.
