Constipation/Colon Cleansing

Crazy subject line I know! I've been doing a little research on colon cleansing. I have many problems with constipation, even when I take laxatives and the prescribed medication my doctor gave to me to add to my drinks. I've had colonoscopy's and all! No such luck. Am I that abnormal? Or is it more common than I realize? Has anyone tried colon cleansing? I'm thinking that might just make me feel like a new person!

Hi R.. I know this is a late response. I'm pretty sure I have never had the kinds of problems you have... at least to the extent that you have them. I have found that I am more regular when I exercise regularly... walking/jogging. I'm sort of an on again, off again exerciser, but I find when I'm "on" I feel much better in that regard. Forgive me if this seems too simplistic!

I have my box I bought for other reasons. :)

I think it could help you very much, but also you may want to either get your IGG (food sensitivity) test done or try to eliminate gluten or dairy or both. Both my mom in law and my husband were either constipated or the other for as many years as I have been around (20+) and after eliminating gluten (for my mom in law) and gluten and dairy (my husband), both have regulated properly.

The question would be whether it is only a digestive issue or more (yeast or bacterial issues in the gut). After you eliminate a few things for at least a month you should know if only the diet is going to be helpful or if you should go further.

If you try the colon cleanse, know you will be trying it with someone else! I have heard it will cleanse weight that is backed up - yuk. I cannot find the site right now, but there was a web site I found that compared all the cleanses and gave the compile results of opinions. Maybe you can find that.

Good luck, J

I had the same problem and went to the doctor. She told me to increase my water intake. I now drink atleast 90 ozs of water a day. You might even see yourself losing weight as well. Try it, water is a natural cleanse to the body. From what I have heard most of the colon cleanses those don't work.

You don't need meds to help you, increase your veggie intake as well as your fruits. Back to the basics helps everytime.

Hey R., any time I get constipated, I eat plain or vanilla yogurt. It naturally cleans your gut, but don't eat too much or you will be in the bathroom a lot! Try one to two teaspoons in the morning at first. You could probably eat a small container of the fruit flavored yogurt, but the tubs of vanilla are cheaper and you don't have to eat as much. Hope this helps.

R.,

I have two things for you. The first is that I have done many cleanses (Colosan is great) and there is one thing that is not printed on the box. Whatever dosage they suggest, start with less. Build up and taper off. If you try to cleanse too quickly, you'll get a "toxin dump" into your system and will likely get headaches and fatigue and feel worse than ever. Also, a quick start will have you loving your potty for a couple of days. No riding Harleys while you are cleansing! ;)

I'm a mother of two with two aging parents to take care, I don't have time to be chained to my potty and I don't always have time to eat properly. So in the interest of convenience and instant gratification, I'm going the colon hydrotherapy route. It's taken me a long time to get to the point that I would even consider letting someone else do this for me - ick! But just like my first Gyn visit, I told myself that mine is not the first colon to be cleansed. I aksed some close friends and am going to a lady that comes highly recommended with many years experience.

Ideally, if we ate properly and stayed properly hydrated, we wouldn't need ANY help. But life is what it is and we have to do the best we can with what we've got.

Good luck.

Hey! Your not alone, thanks for being brave enough to ask. I had a slow bowel system and I took all the test, pills and supplements. Finally, I started sleeping on a magnetic mattress pad (weird, right?) and increased my water in take. That got me going, but only for a while. I had to change my diet and yes I had a colon cleansing - I would highly recommend it after you've prayed about a reputable person. Now it's not a problem at all!

In summary:

When your looking for a product,Be careful. Choose off of referrals from friends or find a health food store to help you decide. Best advice I can give... make sure it is a 100% natural product. 90% of your immune system is in your colon. You don't want to put a bunch of chemicals in there!

Hi R.,

All of these ladies have good points. There are many ways to cleanse the colon and any of them would help anyone! I grew up with colon issues and have completely done away with all of them because I learned some things over the years. First of all, diet is extremely important.

This is a problem that is VERY common today, but shouldn't be. The pesticides and the preservatives in foods cause awful issues with your health, including constipation. (I sometimes think the gluten and the milk in our diets are not as big an issue as the pesticides, perservatives and the hormones in them.) I use a product called Fiberwise which is primarily psyllium husk. This works like a piece of adhesive tape on a linty jacket. It gets sticky in your colon and "peels" the toxins off the colon wall and they are able to be evacuated.. This doesn't only help to cleanse, but will KEEP the colon cleansed. It will get rid of the constipation and not cause diareah. (The Fiberwise tastes great too). Colon Cancer ONLY occurs when there are toxins in the colon.

Hope I helped. If you want any more information, please feel free to ask :)

I almost hesitate to respond as you have so many already but ... I am 42 and have had problems since I was a teen. My mother had me in the ER on more than one occasion to find I was as backed up as one could be! My diet has improved over the years and we even make our own bread and rarely have refined foods and I still have issues so... You will of course want to eat the best you can afford but even that might not cure it. I have taken a product for around 20 years that is both a laxative of sorts and a cleanser but is not habit forming. The only time I have had to increase my dosage is when I was in the latter part of my pregnancies and the pressure caused even more issues for me. I take herb-lax from Shaklee Corporation. It is inexpensive and I swear by it. I have several friends who feel the same way and we joke about how important it is to us and we share if we forget to order and will run out. Let me know if you don't know a Shaklee Distributor or you can order it from me. Recently I have also started taking the Optiflora which is a probiotic and I think it helps too and might work on its own but because of the health values of both products I am going to continue to take both as long as I can afford to. Hope something here helps! By the way the cleanse part of the herb-lax is mild and will not take out the good with the bad! I hope you find relief as I know it truly does make you a different person for many reasons and much healthier.

Sincerely!
K.

Not Crazy at all. What I am going to suggest may sound really crazy, but just try it and see. It can't hurt to try and may make all the difference in the world. I had colonoscopy's, angiograms, CTs, and some colored dye tests??? and a couple of ultrasounds, but after all that money, time and frustration......especially the three day prep for the colonoscopy....yuck, I found the answer for me. Hear it goes. While laying on your back, grab a handful of your left lower pelvic/abdominal flesh next to your hip area. Pulling it out and upward towards your heart, do rapid heavy in and out breathing(lamaze)about ten times or more and then let go. It can be slightly uncomfortable if you've just had stitches. Best part is you don't have to be next to the toilet or anything, it just works to unclog and get things back on track. You may have to do it more than once, but it's free and you can do it all by yourself :) with out your body getting reliant on meds.

Hello R. B,
Did you ask your doctor about colon cleaning? Some people swear by it and I'm tempted to try it myself, but when I ask my physician (who is into natural remedies) she suggested the age old apple a day, but followed by a glass of luke warm water - she said that was a natural way to clean the colon, besides colon cleaning removes the bad, but it also removes the good which can lead to other problem. Another friend went through with it but the effects weren't long term. Personally, I bought a juicer and juice about 4 carrots 1 apple for sweetening and maybe 1 other fruit for flavor -keeps me regular and more tasty than it sounds. In addition, the usual high fiber foods but it must be followed by water. Hope some of this helps and ask your doc to explain the plus and negatives of colon cleansing.

If you've had a colonoscopy, you've had a cleansing. (I haven't done much research on colon cleansings so there may be more to it.) I think I would consider maybe an imbalance of the flora in your intestinal tract. There are yogurts that have more cultures than just lactobaccillus (sp?) Maybe talking to a naturopath or a nutritionist is your next step. Sometimes, people exacerbate their original problem or introduce a new one when they "over-cleanse". What you want is the correct balance of bacteria in your gut. The problem may not be the kind of thing that could be solved with a cleansing, anyway. Has your GI looked into biological reasons for the constipation?

I guess my advice would be to work closely with your gastroenterologist (not just your regular doctor) to trouble-shoot until you find the solution.

Good luck!

If you start eating fruit EVERY DAY, you're going to become regular (unless this is a medical problem that you have). You might have some abdominal cramping in the beginning if you don't eat much fruit already, but this will pass within days or by 2 weeks time. Diet has al ot to do with becoming "regular." Hi R.,

I strongly believe your constipation has to do with your diet. It is so important for us to know our bodies. In other words, do you eat a lot of pork, red meat, vegetables, etc. It is clear that whatever you are intaking your body is telling you it is not working. I have not tried colon cleansing because I don't eat pork and very seldomly eat red meat, which remains in the body for a long, long time. However, whenever my diet changes, I noticed that I get constipated. Knowing how my body works, I will either drink a lot of water, eat certain food that will process waste out of my system, leaving me feel whole and great. So again, learn, learn your body and hopefully, you will be able to identify the problem. Wishing you the best. LJB

I have struggled with constipation my whole life. I haven't ever found a solution so I am curious to see if anyone has some good advice. I have found that lifestyle changes have helped tremendously. I try to eat a high fiber diet, exercise regularly, drink lots of water, and I take Metamucil 2 times a day. My system is still not perfect by any means, but is much better. In the past the constipation has caused a lot of rectal bleeding and anal fissures but I no longer have to worry about this. Thank goodness!

Hi R.,

I have something that will help! It has helped about 10 other women with the same issue. One lady said she will take them the rest of her life, she is in her 60's and has suffered for years. Another lady said she has never been able to burp and has tried everything out there and loves my product as it was the only one that worked and cured her IBS. Personally, I have the same issues. I discovered I was allergic to dairy about 7 years ago when I was 30 so that helped with my severe IBS pains, but didn't help with the regularity. I would sometimes go 3-4 days. My vitamins are amazing and have cured me of that. If you want samples I would be happy to help and send you some. I sell natural health and wellness products and the vitamins have a digestive enzyme that help you break down your foods and also give you proper absorption. Our bodies have natural enzymes that are designed to do this but as you age they don't work as effectively. I also have a colon cleanse that works wonders. I would love to help.
Thanks,
K.

Often, when doctors aren't able to find something wrong, then it can be related to stress. Shortly after I lost my grandfather, I ended up with terrible pain and ended up at the doctor's office. I was told that I had a condition called divirticulitis. It meant that certain small foods like seeds would get stuck in the intestine. (There's more to it, but I honestly don't remember all of it.) I had to have a colonoscopy to determined the damage. Well, there was none. The pain disappeared quickly and it was deterimined that it was just my bodies way of handling the stress from losing my grandfather- who meant the world to me.
I just wanted to offer another perspective.
Good luck,

I can't believe the difference! I feel so much better and have tons of energy. The water intake I'm still working on (high fiber diets require a lot of water - the formula being 1/2 of your body weight in oz. In other words, I weigh 200 so I'm supposed to drink 100oz of water per day which is really only 3 1 Litre bottles of the bottled water.)

Give it a try! I'm serious! It will really help!

So I asked my doctor about it and she gave me a sample pill called Amitiza. I had severe cramps and left work early. About 4 hours after I took it, I was able to go to the bathroom, almost having diarrhea. So, it worked, but I am not sure if the cramps were worth it. I am currently menstruating, but I never have cramps like that. So I guess I will try it again this weekend. It may be close to a cleansing, but I am not sure at what cost.

I've had the same problem for years! I was told I had IBS w/constipation. Nothing has helped. I've had "stomach episodes" everytime I get really constipated. The last "episode" was so bad I wanted to die, worse than labor pains. My doc put me in the hospital and after 1 week and many many test, including colonoscopy & endoscopy, nothing! The night before they were going to send me home they did a hide a scan and a 2nd CT. The next morning a surgeon came in & said he was going to take out my gall blader, it was chronically inflammed. That explained everything that was happening all these years. The doc said they usually wouldn't suspect gall bladder problems with constipation, it's usually the opposite. The hide a scan can see the gall bladder because they inject dye into you to see how your gall bladder is functioning. All you do is lay there. I would ask your doc about it, they never suspected with me. Also because I am only 28yrs old. It's been 3 weeks since surgery & I feel so much better. I'm just trying to figure out what foods I can eat now. Hope this helps! I know your pain.

I am all about the colon cleans so long as it is a safe program. Some of the cleansing programs seem very unhealthy/unsafe to me. Be careful of what you choose.

I have the same constipation issue. I think this is common in women due to a variety of reasons. Mimi brought up the same exact main points I would about the pesticides etc. I also think our hormones play a role, which also goes back to the pesticides and some of the foods we eat because they are/contain xenoestrogens. Changing your diet by going organic can help. I used to think the organic hype was a bunch of crap but I now understand the importance of it.

Cronic constipation is also a sign of parasites. Everyone has parasites in their system at a certain level. Depending on what type of parasite can cause either diahreah or constipation. I know that is not the prettiest thing to know but it is the truth & also why colon cleansing is so important.

HI R.- I am actually on Colonix right now- but my husband read that all they do is put a laxitive in it----but I'm still going to finish the program since I started it...they do have lots of natural ingredients in it- but i think you could spend a lot less at a whole food s store- or even publix has a brand now - a 5 day cleanse and probiotics to take with it.....HOWEVER with that being said...I would follow the advice of most of the others- change your diet- add ground flax or even wheat germ to you cereal (my grandmother use d to do this for us whe we were little) or oatmeal or a drink- it WILL work!! lots of fruit- veggies- and water water water- i don't know why it's so hard for people to drink water during the day - even tho it's not great for the environment- I feel like I drink my water best from water bottles- I take them in the car, on a walk, to excercise to ball games- it really helps me get the recommended amount- I recently heard Jillian on "BIggest Loser" tell one of the contestants - water is the only way to cleanse out your system. LOTS of it I also recetly read take your height in inches (mine is 64) that is how many ounces you need in a day.
Good Luck! ALSO- green tea works wonders!! you can drink it warm- or just buy the bottled green tea!

Hello, Cleaner of Colon,

I hope this helps! Flaxseed has worked wonders for me including curbing carb cravings. Purchase the Milled, ground flaxseed, otherwise if ingested as a whole seed , it will come out as a whole seed and the body won't reap the benefits . Use 2 tsp with either water or your favorite juice every morning! Also, add to salads and smoothies. Try and eat salads daily . Please drink lots of water , at least 6-8 -8oz glasses/ day , otherwise the flaxseed will cause constipation, which is what you don't need. Use the internet to find Northern Edge ?Flaxseed or go to the healthfood sstore or Farmer's market.

Hi, Not crazy at all! Very vita to health. I've had problems off and on myself. Best advise I ever got was to drink 3 liters a day of pure (not tap) water and take my Omega3s (Flora's Flax-O-Mega or Oilsmart by Renewlife). I was excellent at this for about a month and now I have to remind myself. Bottom line - I got results with in the first week. My doc explained that everytime we breath out - we expell water vapor along with everything else sweating, urination etc. and the gut /colon gets constipated due to lack of fluid (water). You probably already know that you should be going at least 2-3 times a day(once per meal). Also remember that tea, colas and coffee are dehydrating. One other effect I've noticed just by doing this - I don't need laxitives, my hair skn and nails are much improved. Aches and pains I had in joints are gone! I've only ever done herbal cleanses (colonics scare me) but if these are done gently and carefully you will probably see benefit from them.
Because of our crazy western diets and lifestle I would guess you are not alone. Best of Luck - hope that helps!

Laxatives and medication for this thing is NOT good for your body at all. They will never help get to the root of the problem. I would go to your local health food store and get on something that will start you off with a lower bowel cleanse and if you want to go further, which I would, you can eventually add a liver/gall bladder cleanse and blood cleanse. Your body is screaming for a d-tox!

Diddo what the previous person said about the pounds and pounds of fecal matter that is built up in a lot of people's system. Because of our SAD (Standard American Diet), we are not doing our body any good and continue to add to the problem.

I'd definitely recommend a cleansing. Then, later on afterwards (probably about 6 months later), see what happens and see if you do need to consider some allergies to food.

Hi R.,

Unfortunately, laxatives usually exacerbate the problem. Foremost, is adequate water intake, as you probably already know, and a diet full of fresh, whole, unprocessed foods. Also a wonderful mild herb called slippery elm is great for a problem like yours. You can get it in powder form and mix about 1/2 tsp. with hot water and drink. It a tree bark and it's loaded with nutrition. Another product called Triphala is excellent for digestive issues like consipation; this is also a very gentle herbal combination. Email me if you'd like to know more!
