If he doesn't seem to be in pain, the length between bowel movements shouldn't be a concern. Babies are very efficient at using the food we give them. Sometimes, there isn't enough waste to vacate for a few days. If he does seem in pain, you can give him a small amount of dark Karo syrup in water. I would start with a 1/4 tsp in 2 oz. and then increase after a few days if it doesn't seem to be working.
Hope that helps!

If the poop isn't HARD, let him poop on his own schedule.
Every three days isn't bad, if he seems to be digesting well
and not uncomfortable.
If it IS hard, then talk to pediatrician -- or perhaps better,
talk to a pediatric nurse practitioner about what to do to soften the poop.

My experience was that putting a little Apple juice in the formula helped. My oldest did this until year 2 :( None of my children could take enfamil. I had to switch to similac sensitive.

My oldest took Enfamil soy and had a similar pooping schedule. He was able to do it on his own, as his poop was not hard and solid but a clay like texture.

My youngest is breast fed and he also has a similar pooping schedule and poop texture. I believe my ped said we could give him juice once he was two months old, but they gave me a restriction like only 2 oz per day (can't remember the exact amount). So, I would contact your ped.

Best of luck!

What did your pediatrician say? Babies poop on different schedules (as all the moms are saying). If you continue to "help" him because you think his schedule is not right, you could actually make things worse, such as creating a dependency. Two months old is a very young baby; I would do nothing without medical guidance. (Both my kids were breastfed. One went near daily and often; the other went days between movements.)

Baby probiotics!! You will see a huge difference in just a week. You can buy them from natural food stores, They are many times in the refrigerated section. (I have found the refrigerated ones, to be the most effective.) For more immediate relief, put a tiny bit of pure prune juice in the bottom of his bottle.

That was about the time my daughter had constipation issues as well. She is currently in Enfamil Gentle Ease. I did the stimulation as well, but couldn't do it all the time for her. The original pediatrician I started out with ignored my concerns, so I switched doctors. Her new pedistrician suggested dark Karo syrup. I started out with one table spoon in her bottles and that is all she needed. I did that for about a month until she just worked it out on her own. Before that when she would go she would just scream and it would come out very hard. Now she is a lot better and if her poop is a little firm in the morning, she will go again later to clean herself out. Hopefully this helps.

If he's only 2 months, you could still get your milk in. Breastfeeding him would take care of any problems. If you don't want to go through the time it takes to work on that - babymaxiofolous - a probiotic powder would probably do the trick. You can find it in your health food stores.

My daughter was on lactose free milk and was very constipated. She would cry so often and so hard that I took her to the emergency room. Initially they told me that this was normal etc., but I requested an x ray on my then3 month old. The x-ray showed all the gas bubbles and old bowels that she never moved. The ER doctor felt so bad for her. They ended up giving her pain medicine and advised to change her milk and to give her the dark colored Karo Syrup, I believe it was a teaspoon/tablespoon per so many ounces of formula. Also, I was told to give her water. Not a lot, an ounce or so because the formula doesn't contain enough water to help regulate the baby. I did it and that God it worked for us. Hope this helps.

Check to see if the formula you are feeding him has iron in it. Iron is VERY constipating. Most infants, unless they have been tested for anemia do not need any iron supplementing, even though most docs tell you to give it to them. If he is getting runny bms from the milk based, he probably can't tolerate the milk. How about soy based/no iron? Also, it wouldn't hurt to give him some water. Congrats on your little one! Hope this helps.

i would suggest let him do it on his own. if the doctor's say nothing is wrong, and he is going, let him do it. Both my kids have been nursed. My duaghter would poop every time she nursed, and my son now, is 8 weeks old tomorrow, and only poops every 3-5 days. I have talked with the doctor's about it, and they say that every child has a different schedule. My son's body is putting to use just about everything he is taking in, so he doesn't have much to poop the reason it's every few day. Unless your son is crying when he is trying to poop on his own he isn't contipated, and doesn't need assistance.

Are you sure he needs soy? If he does not have a true allergy (which would be obvious, blood in stool, hives), then get him off soy! Soy causes a lot of constipation. Gas and fussiness doesn't mean that he is allergic to cows milk. If regular Similac and Enfamil are giving him gas/fussiness then try the Gerber Good Start Protect Plus
Good Luck to you and you baby boy!
