Constipated 19 Month Old

My daughter, 19 months old, has always been a "once a day" kind of gal, but she hasn't had a bowel movement since the day before yesterday (and she was a little distressed by that one). Today she's been grabbing at her diaper and saying very pitifully "poo poo." When I tell her she needs to get her poo poo out, she says no; when I ask her if her bottom hurts she says yes.

I've tried to give her prune juice and she will not drink it. She detests messiness on her hands and feet so I thought perhaps she doesn't want to feel the mess against her skin in her diaper so we tried sitting on her potty (which she doesn't use yet at all) and even holding her on the toilet so she can "be like sister" but that didn't help, either.

Any suggestions for my baby's poor bottom?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

SHE POOPED!!

I turned on a Wiggles DVD and she danced a big ol' diaper load right out. :) It wasn't hard & compacted and she came to me for a change immediately after, so I think she just doesn't like the mess.

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies!

Try letting her drink "full strenth" apple juice!! (4 oz should get it, but you may need to give her 8 oz) If that doesn't work, you can take her to one of the Pediatric clinics (Acute Kids Care, or Pediatrics After Hours) or another Minor Emergency Clinic (Care Now is one we use), and they can check her out. The great thing about these clinics is that you will only have to pay the same copay as your primary doctor. (For us, it's $15 vs. $150 for the ER).

We have taken our son to Acute Kids Care, and they are excellent with him! We haven't had to use Pediatrics After Hours yet, because they have only recently opened. Care Now takes care of all ages, birth to adult. You can also call one of these clinics to ask if you should go ahead and bring your daughter in. I have their numbers if you want to call.

My phone # is ###-###-####. I hope your daughter gets to feeling better soon!! ~J.~

lots of fiber....
apples, raisins, dried figs, grapes, strawberries, hold off on the milk products, oatmeal, fiber cereals, does she like salads?
lettuce, broccoli, fig newtons, popcorn. maybe even a baby suppository?
