Constipated 10 Mo Old

He is going to the bathroom daily so I'm not sure if constipated is the correct term, but my son has been having very hard, often small stools. They look painful to pass! I'm giving him lots of veggies, green beans, tried peaches, some water daily, (he won't drink prune juice), nothing seems to make it better. Also we cut down on foods that have a binding effect like bananas and cereal. He did recently switch to a new soy formula, but the problem started before then. I'm looking for advice besides giving him medicine, if anyone has any or also ideas about why this may be happening. Really appreciate all your wisdom!

Dear Tatiana, Is you baby getting enough water? If he doesn't like prune juice, how about mixing it with apple juice? Grandma Mary

Sounds like you're on the right track nutritionally. I'd have him evaluated by a Doctor of Chiropractic that has experience taking care of children.

Hi There,
I started giving my kids canned mandarin oranges around that time... they are soft and don't have the skins on them, and work great as a laxative!! (and the kids love them because they are sweet!). Also, blueberries have a laxative effect... he is too young for whole blueberries, but Gerber makes a blueberry apple baby food... you could try that.
Good Luck.

Mix the prune juice with other juice. 1/2 and 1/2. I drank that while pregnant with my son and my daughter started drinking it everyday for about a year. Raisins work also.

Does he have any iron fortified formula/cereals/vitamins? If so try cutting those out for a while since they often lead to constipation. Dairy can also be a cause for constipation in many people. See if removing all of it helps.

Increase fluids where you can and also up his intake of probiotic foods (non-dairy yogurt, unpasteurized sauerkraut and other fermented pickles--even just a couple of sips of the ferment juice is good) or probiotics to give his gut a jump start.

I haven't read your other responses but want to take the time to share with you my experience. My grandson was severely constipated as a preschooler. He had a bowel movement perhaps 2-3 times per week and there was no doubt it was painful. He screamed. The doctor said to stop all dairy products. That's not only milk, but cheese, yogurt, pudding, and anything else that contained a predominance of milk. Then to add as much liquid as he'd drink. He wouldn't drink water which meant he got a lot of fruit "juice" which was really water flavored with a small amount of juice. Increase all of the foods that you are giving your son. Also raw fruits and vegetables as well as cooked ones. He also prescribed a natural laxative which is now available over the counter. I can't remember it's name but other mothers have given it's name on other posts. This product works by helping the intestines absorb water. It is a natural process and not habit forming. Another product that might be helpful is Benefiber that uses psyllium seed which is a natural fiber and not habit forming. It's advantage is that it's a fine powder and mixes easily in liquid. Psyllium seed, even when ground, causes liquids to become more sold and has a flavor which some find objectionable. I and many of my relatives have used psyllium seed products off and on for years for both constipation and diarrhea. It is not a medicine. It forms bulk in the intestines. Moist bulk is necessary for soft formed bowel movements.

Milk and dairy products can be constipating. Try taking those out of his diet for a couple of weeks. I haven't heard that cereal, except for rice cereal, is constipating. Most cereals contain fiber which helps in forming bulk. The goal is to add liquid and fiber.

I would be hesitant about giving him soy because soy allergies are common. My granddaughter and I are both allergic to soy. (We are not genetically related.) Her allergist said that since soy allergies are common to delay introducing soy until the baby/toddler is older.

My grandson is now 6 and is no longer considered to be constipated but he does still have small hard stools at times. He does not complain of pain and runs to the bathroom when he needs to poop.

Don't ruin your little baby by using meds that are full of preservatives. Instead, search for a natural remedy to soothe him from tummy bugs. My LO was also having constipation and used to poop after 24 hours and sometimes after 2 days. We gave him babies magic tea and he started pooping normal without gas pain.

Hi T.:

There is so much more I would need to know in order to assist you. What was your diet when pregnant with him? Is he under any type of stress? Are there any changes going on in the home?

Those are key questions I would present, in a consultation, to thoroughly assist him and you. If you are interested in exploring this further, you may contact me and I will let you know what is involved in a natural health consult.

All the best,

Try pear juice. I like that much better myself. Don't dilute it that will just weaken the effects. Continue giving water but seperately.

Try Grapes and watermelon. My son had the same problem. It works best in the morning before his breakfast after his milk. I found that fruit on an empty stomach cured him of any constipation. HopE it works!

Hi T.,

Because he is only 10 months old you do need a liquid type of remedy -but not much. There are some things you can use. One is cheap and I tried it in comparing my company's fiber to it. This can be bought in supermarket and it is safe. You can run it by your doctor if you want to too. Basically physillium seeds, 100% natural powered so fine that it is so easy to drink in water, juice anything liquid. Benefiber-you can even put it in recipes. Do not know how they did it! Has no taste really. It has 3gms dietary fiber/3gm soluable fiber. This combo good. My company has a great tasting like peach fiber you put with water or juice, shakes etc. But ours gets thick and after you shake it up-you need to drink it right up!-That will not work in a bottle or if he drinks his juice slow.

This next sharing information on the subject, is not pertaining to a 10 month old, but anyone else that eats solid foods and old enough to drink all sorts of liquids too.(Do not use in soda or carbonated stuff.)

As an addition for your family's good health in the future.. My company has a high fiber/protein cookie, great for diets and helps people stay very regular daily with one cookie! Taste great too. This is great for everyone (he is too young now for cookie unless he has been eating food like this) to keep our digestive track clean and functioning. I have a cookie a day and now I do not take the fiber stuff. So that works great, is a great nutritional snack and fills me up too. If you have an interest in the cookies or our Vitafiber, call me at ###-###-#### or email me or go to the website for my health food store on line, if it will post here: www.ShopVitamark.com use promo code: 628051 to purchase anything on that site. Discount code. Website also has info on different health issues and what you can do naturally for them. Without good health, life can be tougher. Good Luck and God Bless!
